2018년 11월 18일자 AP 통신 보도에 따르면, 69세의 네들란드 TV 출연자로 ‘자기식 긍정철학 스승(Self-styled positivity guru)’을 자처하는 에밀레 라텔반드 씨가 자신의 나이를 호적상 나이보다 20년 젊게 고쳐 달라고 법원에 낸 소송을 해당 아른헴 지방법원이 기각했다고 한다.
소장에서 라텔반드 씨는 ‘나이는 자신이 느끼는 만큼 젊은 것’이라고 주장했으나 법원은 ‘나이란 단지 숫자에 불과한 것이지만, 그렇다고 마음대로 바꿀 수 있는 것도 아니다’라고 판결을 내렸다고 한다. 여기서 우리는 태어나면서부터 나이를 먹는다는 말을 좀 생각해 볼 필요가 있다.
인류역사상 고대 인도와 그리스 시대로부터 시간이란 수수께끼를 풀어보려고 많은 사람들, 특히 철학자들이 고민해왔다. 그리스신화에서는 ‘크로노스’가 시간의 화신으로 쓰이고 있다. 그리스 사람들이 시간을 지칭하는 말에는 두 가지가 있는데, 그 하나는 '크로노스'이고 또 하나는 '카이로스'이다. 전자는 흐르는 시간의 순서와 수적인 양(量)을 뜻하고, 후자는 시간의 보람된 질적(質的)인 측면을 의미한다.
우리는 나이를 ‘먹는다’고 하는데 어떻게 뭘 먹는가에 따라 ‘나이’가 정해진다는 뜻이 아닐까.
‘네가 먹는 것이 바로 너다’ 라는 말이 있다. 이 말은 네가 사랑을 먹으면 사랑을 낳고, 미움을 먹으면 미움을 낳게 된다는 말이다. 희망을 먹으면 희망을 낳고 절망을 먹으면 절망을 낳게 된다. 그대가 사는 순간 순간의 삶이 코스모스의 축복이든가, 아니면 반대로 카오스의 저주가 될 수밖에 없다.

According to the recent news reported by The Associated Press and others, the 69-year-old Dutch TV personality Emile Ratelband has asked a court for a new birthday that legally would make him 49. Mr. Ratelband, a self-styled positivity guru, argued that age is just a number, and the the Dutchman wants his changed.
The Arnhem District Court refused his request saying that age ain’t nothing but a number, but it’s not a number we can change as we see fit.
Since the earliest days of human history, especially in ancient India and Greece, the riddle of time must have exercised people’s minds, the philosophers’ in particular.
In Greek mythology, Khronos (or Chronus to the Romans) was the personification of time. The Greeks are said to have had two different words for time: Chronos refers to numeric or chronological time, while another word Kairos refers to the more qualitative concept of the right or opportune moment.
In Korean, we say we ‘eat age’. The implication seems to me that how and what you ‘eat’ decides your age.
We're used to the popular saying that 'you are what you eat'.
Wouldn't this mean that
when you eat love, you beget love;
when you eat hatred, you beget hatred;
when you eat hope, you beget hope;
when you eat despair, you beget despair;
thus your life, or rather each breath
of yours is destined to become either
a blessing of the Cosmos or a curse of the Chaos?!
