친애하는 독자 여러분
지난 7월 창간된 코스미안뉴스를 애독해주시는 독자 여러분께 한 해가 저무는 이때에 감사의 인사와 함께 새해에는 늘 건강하시고 다복하시기를 빌면서 몇 자 적습니다. 우선 아래와 같은 글을 우리 같이 나누고 싶어 옮겨 봅니다.
2018년 12월 15일자 중앙일보 칼럼 ‘12월의 얼굴’에서 고선희 서울예대 교수는 순 우리말인 ‘얼굴’이란 말은 그 사람의 ‘얼’이 들어있는 ‘굴'이라고 했습니다. 얼굴에는 마음의 뿌리라 할 수 있는 영혼이 담겨 있다면서 미국 시인 메이 사튼(May Sarton, 1912-1995. Eleanore Marie Sarton의 필명)의 시 ‘나 이제 내가 되네 (Now I Become Myself)’의 한 구절을 인용했습니다.
나 이제 내가 되었네.
여러 해, 여러 곳을 돌아다니느라
시간이 많이 걸렸네.
나는 이리저리 흔들리고 녹아 없어져
다른 사람의 얼굴을 하고 있었네.
영어에 ‘몸보다 마음(Mind over Body)’이란 표현이 있습니다. 이 말의 뜻을 나는 이렇게 풀이합니다. 몸의 건강은 물론 마음의 행복도 다 마음먹기에 달렸습니다. 마음을 어떻게 먹는지는 제일 먼저 얼굴에 나타납니다. 이를 불교에서는 일체유심조(一切唯心造)라 했습니다.
2010년에 출간된 책 ‘아버지는 매일 가출하고 싶다’에서 저자 김희곤은 “눈은 마음의 창이며 얼굴은 그 사람이 살아온 삶의 지도이자 거울이다. 얼굴 표정만으로도 그 사람이 어떻게 살아왔는지 알 수 있다. 성형수술로 얼굴의 주름은 없앨 수 있어도 영혼의 창은 가릴 수 없다”고 했습니다.
저는 아주 어릴 때부터 감탄했습니다. 나이 지긋하신 할머니나 할아버지들은 한 번 힐끔 쳐다보기만 해도 그 사람 됨됨이를 정확히 파악하시는 걸 보고서 말입니다. 나이를 먹어가며 살다 보니 저도 모르게 하나를 보면 전체를 다 알 수 있다는 뜻의 오자성어(五字成語) 추일사가지(推一事可知)를 읊게 되는 것 같습니다.
여러분도 다 잘 아시겠지만, 2006년 출간된 이후 전 세계적으로 3천만 권 이상 팔리고 50여 개국 언어로 번역된 The Secret by Rhonda Byrne의 메시지를 제가 단 한 마디로 줄인다면 ‘끼리끼리’라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 긍정적인 마음을 먹으면 긍정적인 결과를 얻게 된다는 것이지요. 피카소도 ‘네가 상상할 수 있는 것은 이미 현실이다’라고 했습니다.
그런데 제가 어느덧 인생 80여 년 동안 직접 경험하거나 주위에서 일어나는 일들을 지켜보면서 독자 여러분께 꼭 말씀드리려는 것은 더러는 꿈조차 꾸지 못하고 상상조차 할 수 없었던 기적 같은 일들이 생기더란 것입니다. 그 하나의 예가 우리 ‘코스미안뉴스’의 탄생이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.
하지만 코스미안뉴스는 이제 겨우 걸음마를 시작했을 뿐입니다. 여러분께서 잘 키워주시고 발전시켜 주실 것을 간절히 바랍니다.
앞에서 인용한 메이 사튼의 시 제목처럼 지구촌에 사는 우리 모두는 ‘나 이제 내가 돼야’ 하지 않겠습니까? 그 말은 다름 아닌 ‘코스미안’이 되자는 말과 같습니다.

Now I Must Become Myself
Dear CosmianNews Readers,
In order to extend my deeply felt thanks and best wishes to you all for the New Year, I am writing this short note. .
Firstly, I’d like to share with you a couple of quotes as below.
In an opinion page column article entitled ‘December Face’ (Korea Daily/Joongang Ilbo, December 15, 2018)Ms. Ko Sun-hee, Broadcast Screenwriter/Scripter/Scenarist & Seoul Institute of the Arts Professor, quotes a phrase from ‘Now I Become Myself’ by American poet May Sarton (1912-1995, the pen name of Eleanore Marie Sarton), after saying that the pure Korean word ‘얼굴(face)’, a combination of two words ‘얼(soul)’ and ‘굴(cave)’, meaning, therein lies one’s soul, the root of one’s mind:
Now I Become Myself
Now I become myself, It’s taken
Time, many years and places;
I have been dissolved and shaken,
Worn other people’s faces,
There’s a popular phrase in English, ‘Mind over Body’, which I interpret as follows:
Your mind affects not only the health of your body, but it also affects the peace of your mind. In Buddhism, don’t they put it this way, ‘Everything depends on the mind’ ? And Buddha was quoted as saying: “With our thoughts we make the world.”
“Eyes are windows of your mind and face is the map as well as the mirror of your life journey…by your facial expression alone you tell how you’ve been leading your own life…You can get rid of all the wrinkles by cosmetic/plastic surgery, but you can never blind the windows of your soul.”
This is a quote from ‘Father Wants to Leave Home Everyday’, a nonfiction book by Kim Hee-gon published in Korea in 2010.
Since my early childhood, I was always amazed by how grownups, especially aged grandmas and grandpas, could judge a person’s character by taking a quick glance at the person. As I have come to age, I too have come to recite the old adage ‘by looking at a bit (sample) of behavior of a person, you can tell all about that person.’
As you may all know, The Secret, a best-selling 2006 self-help book by Rhonda Byrne that has sold 30 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 50 languages is based on the belief of the law of attraction.
If I were to summarize the message of this book in a phrase,
it could be ‘Like Attracts Like’. Your positive attitude will bring about the positive outcome. Didn’t Pablo Picasso say? “Everything you can imagine is real.”
Something I want to get across to you, based on my own life experience of living and observing people around me for 82 years, is that sometimes things that you have never even dreamed of and that you could never have even imagined can happen, indeed, like miracles, or rather more than miracles, beyond all belief. One example is the birth of CosmianNews. Ha ㅡ Ha ㅡ Really.
All of us briefly sojourning on this global village of planet earth, mind you, each and every one, ‘Now I (Must) Become Myself’, just like the title of May Sarton’s poem quoted above. This very ‘Myself’ is none other than ‘Cosmian’, I pray.
