How to Become an Optimist

Nietzsche urges us to be wanderers, “though not as a traveler to a final destination: for this destination does not exist.”

Nevertheless, young Nietzsche instructs:

"Set for yourself goals, high and noble goals, and perish in pursuit of them.”

This means that what can be achieved cannot be your ideal. Doesn’t it?

If Nietzsche is an idealist, Epictetus may be called a realist. A version of the story by the Ancient Greek Stoic philosopher, who was born a slave, it goes:

"I have to die. If it is now, well, then, I die now; if later, then now I will take my lunch, since the hour for lunch has arrivedand dying I will tend to later.”

I recall what Nora says in ‘From Prada to Nada’, a 2011 US romantic comedy based on Jane Austin’s 1811 novel ‘Sense and Sensibility’ when the spoiled sisters Nora and Mary have to move in with their Aunt Aurelia in East L.A.’s Boyle Heights after their world of wealth and privilege in Beverly Hills crashes, following their father’s sudden death.

When asked how she is doing, Nora replies:

"Well, you know, like a cockroach I can accommodate anything and thrive anywhere."

So, perhaps, one can say that when looked at from the big picture, everything is trivial, has two sides, and just beautiful and wonderful.

Although to be an idealist or a realist is one’s choice, at the same time, by combining the two, one can become an optimist.
