Wrung out

Camino 8

Wrung out

Day 9 and I got my first soaking. This was totally unnecessary, as I could so easily have stopped to put on my proper waterproof jacket. But I was already wearing a fairly water repellant outer jacket and hat, plus the rain was not heavy, and we only had 5kms to go, so I didn't bother. I paid for my laziness. In any case, a hot shower and laundry facilities provided the immediate cure. Things are looking up here in Santo Domingo de Alcaza!

The first part of today's walking was breathtakingly beautiful. Scene after scene of gorgeous snow capped mountains and frosty vineyards, lit up with the brilliant colours of sunrise...waking up the frozen sleeping land with the kiss of warmth.

My hands are always absolutely freezing when walking in the early hours of the morning.

Some days ago, Jade kindly gave me some fingerless gloves that she was throwing out from her backpack "cull"! These are making a huge difference, but my fingers still get painfully cold and no amount of tucking them into my armpits seems to help. Only when the sun appears over the horizon does it change. It is quite magical. Perhaps it's partially psychological, but it seems that the sun is so powerful that defrosting is instantaneous.

I was a little later starting out today (7am), mostly because yesterday was such an epic day. Yesterday was our longest distance day so far, at 30kms. It was also our coldest day, with periods of snow and hail, as well as sunshine and blue skies. This aspect reminded me of Scottish weather! I had to wear my "expedition" merino layer, an outer jacket and also my waterproof jacket to help against the high wind factor. Even when wearing all of this and carrying my backpack, I was never too warm!

I'd set off alone, but as the first stop was after 3hrs and there was only one cafe in the town, pretty much everyone who was on the same stage of the Camino, congregated there. Much rejoicing, as it was such a relief to get out of the cold. Each has his own way of dealing with the cold : some need warmth in the form of alcohol, others want coffee. But food is always welcome. After several "café con leche" each, our little table comprising Jade, George and Orlando(pseudonym),were bouncing off the walls!

I first met Orlando on Day 4 when he passed me like a blur, bounding down from our highest climb, over the steep terrain of rocks and loose stones. He turned to me as he passed, and gleefully called out, "this is the easy bit!" before disappearing within seconds. At the time, I was picking my way down using a pole to help, in a very slow and careful manner. So the sight of him flying down with such abandon, filled me with fear that one tiny slip on these loose stones would incapacitate him for the forthcoming weeks.

Fast forwarding to my evening in Logroño, Orlando came over to me in the hostel cafe while I was writing my blog, and asked for my blog address. He then went away to read it. After some time, he approached me again and told me that he was interested in my story and that he too had a melanoma cancer. Quite unusually, it was in his eye. But luckily for him, they had caught it very early and the treatment had begun very fast. I asked him how they had discovered it so early, and he then told me the most incredible story.

Without disclosing his private story, it involved the most mysterious sequence of events spanning twenty years. This led him to making an uncanny decision, which set off a miraculous chain of circumstances, which in turn led to his diagnosis.

I was astounded. We then spoke about the disease itself and despite the terrible aspects of it, that there were invaluable and very positive elements that emerge from it. We were both agreed on this point. I was incredibly impressed by his demeanour and attitude.

The following day (yesterday), we had met for breakfast (as mentioned above) and again by chance for lunch some kilometres later. As the weather started to turn, we left Orlando to the café's wifi.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the albergue in Najera to receive an email informing me that Orlando had just donated £400 to our fundraising site!

I was utterly overwhelmed and burst into tears! My roommates were naturally concerned, but they relaxed a little when they realised the reason for my outbreak. The generosity of almost strangers is a marvel and wonder.

Shortly after this, the albergue wifi brought me notifications that Gordon's friend, Graeme Dunn, had posted several videos from Gordon's "Show Me You Love Me!" Party which we held on February 16th last year at Edinburgh Castle. It had been a truly wonderful night celebrating the breadth of Gordon's life with friends and family across the globe, with music, dancing and revelry.

I apprehensively plugged in my earphones... for the first time on the Camino (glad that I hadn't brought them in vain!) and played this new video footage. It was transporting...and of course amazing and invaluable to me, yet also pretty challenging. I wept copiously into my towel. My bunk bed mate, Osi (for the second time since Pamplona), comforted me in a manner in which only the most sensitive are capable.

As you can imagine, after the fatigue of that day's 30kms of Camino, an overly generous donation and all this new video footage, I was a total mess! A sightseeing stroll around Najera was much in order! We ended up gathering troops (a wonderfully motley crew of pilgrims), going for wine and tapas, and then eating a huge pilgrim's dinner at a recommended local. Sadly I was too exhausted to stay out and watch the Barcelona / Madrid football match.
