Day 5. Feeling amazing. A combination of many things. Though quite possibly, the immediate reason is that I’ve just drank a shed load of sugar (rare occurrence in my life) and caffeine (much less rare) in the form of a drink called “Calimoché”.
This is red wine and coca cola mixed together on ice! Quite. I surely wouldn’t have ordered it had I known beforehand! But this afternoon, as I explored the town of Estella, I saw a group of 4 people sitting in the late sun at a riverside bar. I had briefly chatted to a couple of them back in Larrasoaña and we have been leapfrogging each other on the Camino ever since, but we hadn’t yet “met”, so I went over to say hello. Oh, did I forget to mention, that one of them was actually wearing his impressive knee brace as a hat…?!
A few Calimochés later, we’re all good friends! They are very entertaining : great sense of humour, ability to tease each other mercilessly, speak one’s mind and behave like a loon! All qualities I aspire to.
Some of the things I discovered about them : they are all friends (two couples) who live in Antwerp, with interesting backgrounds, ranging from art historian and art storage to research advisor to Hermès! James and Frank have had close shaves with death quite recently.
달콤한 도취
오늘이 오일 째다. 기분이 너무 좋다. 이것은 여러 요인이 복합된 것이다. 아마도 직접적인 원인은 깔리모쉐라고 하는 카페인과 설탕이 혼합된 드링크를 많이 마셨기 때문일 것이다. 이것은 레드와인과 코카콜라를 얼음에 섞어 만든 것이다. 예전에 몰랐던 이것을 더 시키지 않을 수 없었다.
오늘 오후에 에스테야 시내를 탐방하다가 해거름 햇살을 받으며 강변의 주점에 앉아 있는 네명의 사람들을 보았다. 그 중 두 명은 라라소냐에서 간단한 대화를 나눴던 사람들인데, 여기까지 오면서 아직 만나지 못했었다. 너무 반가워서 인사를 하려고 깡충깡충 뛰면서 달려갔다. 맙소사! 내가 잊어버리고 이야기 하지 못 할뻔 한 게 하나 있는데 그 중 한 명은 무릎보호대를 모자처럼 머리에 뒤집어쓰고 있었다.
약간의 깔리모쉐를 마시고 나서 우리 모두는 친구가 되었다. 정말 재미있는 사람들이다. 유머 감각이 뛰어나고, 악의 없이 수다를 떠는 능력들이 탁월하다. 마음을 열고 말하는 천진한 바보들이라고 할까. 진정 내가 닮아야 할 부분이다.
그들로부터 몇 가지를 알아낸 것이 있다. 그들 두 쌍의 남녀는 모두 친구 사이로 네들란드 안터호프에 산다고 한다. 이들은 재미있는 경력을 갖고 있는데 현대미술 전시공간인 에르메스재단에 자문을 하기 위해 미술사를 전공하고 그림을 수장하는 일을 하고 있다. 제임스와 프랑크는 최근에 위기일발로 죽음의 문턱까지 갔었다고 한다. 우리는 여러 가지 놀이를 하며 멋진 시간을 보냈다.
