작가 노트
나의 작업은 소녀 시절의 과도기를 다룬다. 어린 소녀의 정체성이 형성되는 사춘기엔 어색하고 불편하지만 가장 마법같은 변화가 일어난다. 나는 이 주제를 인어, 하피 그리고 마녀를 포함한 신화, 민화의 이미지와 형태를 통해 표현한다. 이 인물들의 보편적인 친숙함과 신비로운 성격은 여성의 성장에 동반하는 아름다움과 두려움을 원활하게 전달한다.
친구들이 자녀를 양육하기 시작하면서 나는 소녀와 여성에 관한 이야기, 그리고 그들이 문화에서 어떻게 대변되고 있는지에 대해 관심이 많아졌다. 특히 우리가 어린 아이들을 이 세계와 사회에 나아갈 준비를 시키는 과정에서 어떤 종류의 이야기를 할 지 고려하게 되었다. 또한 미디어와 사회의 이야기 방식이 한 사람의 성장과 정체성에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 자기성찰적으로 검토하게 되었다.
나는 아이들에게 위험과 불편함에 대해 경고하고 이를 대비하는 이야기를 나눔과 동시에 앞으로 다가올 흥미진진한 삶의 멋진 측면에 대해서도 조명하고 싶다. 이 작업은 스크린 프린트, 혼합 재료 수채화 프린트 및 섬세하게 자른 종이 실루엣들에서 볼 수 있다.
나는 신화나 민속처럼 예술적 배경 유무에 관계없이 사람들이 친숙하고 쉽게 알 수 있는 소재들에 끌린다. 그리고 나의 궁극적인 목표는 관객들이 자신이 누구며 자신이 인생에서 어떤 경험을 가지고 있는 지와 관계없이 나의 작업에 친밀함을 느끼는 것이다.
My work deals with girlhood in transition. The
awkward, uncomfortable and yet magical changes that occur in adolescence as a
young girl’s identity is formed. These themes are expressed borrowing from
imagery and figures from myth and folklore, such as mermaids, harpies, and
witches. The cultural familiarity and the mystical nature of these characters
fluently translate the beauty and horrors of female development. As friends
start to raise their own sons and daughters, I have become more interested in
how stories of girlhood and women and how they are represented are changing. It
especially makes one consider what kind of stories we tell to prepare young
kids for this world and society, and I seek to share stories that
simultaneously warn and prepare kids for dangers and discomfort, but also shed light on the exciting and wonderful
aspects of life that may come. These stories are rendered in screen prints,
mixed media watercolor prints, and in delicately cut paper silhouettes. I am drawn to these materials, because like
myths and folktales, they are familiar and recognizable to those with and
without art backgrounds. And ultimately my goal is for the viewer to feel a
sense of intimacy with my work, regardless of who you are and what your own
experiences are in life.
