2018년 12월 13일자 한국일보 연예스포츠 난에 30년 전 ‘담다디’로 강변가요제 대상을 수상한 가수 이상은에 대한 기사가 실렸다. 그녀는 “아티스트 이상은의 인생을 관통하는 삶의 도(道)가 있다면 뭘까요?”라는 질문에 이렇게 답했다고 한다.
“동심을 잃지 않는 게 중요해요. 동심이 없어지는 순간, 감수성도 소통 능력도 함께 사라질 테니까요.”
이야말로 만고의 진리를 밝히는 너무도 생생한 증언이다. ‘동심(童心)이야말로 우리 모두의 인생을 관통하는 삶의 도(道)라고 할 수 있다. 안데르센 동화 ‘황제의 새옷’에 등장하는 어린애와 생텍쥐페리의 어른들을 위한 동화 ‘어린 왕자’ 같은 동심 말이다.
1994년 미국에서 출간된 ‘어린이들에게 종교가 필요한가? (Do Children Need Religion?)'라는 책이 있다. 카톨릭 신자였던 저자 마타 페이(Martha Fay)는 이 책에서 명쾌한 답을 내놓지 않고 있다. 다만 신이 남성인지 여성인지 그리고 흰 색인지 검은 색인지, 죽음과 천국은 무엇이며, 무엇이 옳고 무엇이 그른 것인지 등 에 대해 묻는 열 살짜리 딸 안나(Anna)에게 자신이 엄마로서 어떻게 대응하는가를 다루고 있다.
나는 아주 어릴 때부터 어른들의 독단적인 위선을 싫어하여, 아무리 나이를 많이 먹더라도 결코 동심을 잃지 않겠노라고 굳게 다짐했었다. 아빠가 되고 나서는 세 딸들 이름에 다 어린애 ‘아(兒)’자를 넣어 해아(海兒), 수아(秀兒), 성아(星兒)라 이름지었다.
하늘에 하늘님이 계시고 땅속에 땅님이 계신다면, 하늘에서 내려오신 하늘님과 땅속에서 솟아오르신 땅님이 바로 어린 아이들이 아닐까. 어린이들이 사는 곳이 바로 천국인데, 공중에 무슨 천국이 있으며 지하에 무슨 지옥이 있겠는가. 어른이 어린애처럼 되려면 필요한 것이 종교다. 그래서 어린이는 종교의 교주라고 할 수 있다. 그런데 누가 누구에게 전도를 하고 설교를 한다는 것인가?
나는 어린이가 곧 '하나님'이라고 믿는다. 예수도 우리가 어린 아이 같이 되지 않으면 천국에 들어갈 수 없다고 했다. 어린이에게는 참도 거짓도, 선도 악도, 아름다운 것도 추한 것도, 옳고 그른 것도, 남자도 여자도, 너와 나도 따로 없다. 동물, 식물, 광물도 어린아이와 같은 하나가 아닌가. 하나님이 '하나님'이라면, 작다는 뜻의 '아리'를 붙여 '하나아리님'도 곧 어린 코스미안이라 해야 하리라.

Cosmian is the Personification of Childlike Divinity
Asked in a recent interview with The Entertianment/Sports of The Korea Times, December 13, 2018 “If there is a tao running through your life as an artist, what that would be?”
Korean singer songwriter Lee Sang Eun a.k.a. Lee-Tzsche answered:
“Not to lose the childlike innocence. The moment I lose it, I lose everything, all my perceptions, means of empathy.”
Wow, what a convincing, ever-lasting and universal testimony! Shouldn’t this be the tao for every human being? That is to say like the child in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes and Antoine de Saint Exupery’s fairy tale for grownups The Little Prince/(Princess).
‘Do Children Need Religion?’ by Martha Fay was published in 1994. The author, an ex-Catholic, of this book with its quizzical title doesn't give clear-cut answers. She tells how she responds to the questions of her young (then only ten-year-old) daughter, Anna, about a She or a He God, a black or a white God, death, Heaven, the meaning of right and wrong, and the like.
Ever since my youngest days, I was disgusted by all the self-righteous dogmatism full of hypocrisy constantly exhibited by grownups. I kept telling myself that I would never grow up to be like that. When I became a father, I named my three daughters, Hae-a (Child of the Sea), Su-a (Child of the Sky) and Song-a (Child of the Star) with the common letter ‘아’ in Korean and ‘兒‘ in Chinese character, meaning ‘child’, praying that they would never lose their childlike curiosity, enthusiasm, innocence and sense of wonder.
I, for one, believe that the child in us is the most divine 'god-ling.' Didn't Jesus say we couldn't enter heaven unless we were childlike? To a child, nothing is true or false, good or bad, beautiful or ugly, right or wrong, high or low, male or female; you and I are not separate, not separate from animals, plants or rocks. For, literally, all things in Nature are one and the same.
If the God of the sky is up there and the God of the earth is down here in the ground, children are those very Gods that descended down and ascended up. If anywhere children are, there is the very Heaven, if so, what Heaven up there in the sky or what Hell down in the underground could there be? If children are founders of religions, how could then anyone dare to preach to the godlings!
If God is oneness, so are the children as Little Cosmians.
