이제 소비자가 신문이나 잡지를 구독하듯 자동차도 구매나 리스를 하지 않고 수시로 필요에 따라 원하는 차종으로 바꿔 타는 시대가 왔다. 소유로 인한 보험이나 수리 비용, 세금 등에 신경 쓸 필요가 없다. 매달 일정 금액을 서비스 회사에 납부하면 된다. 미국에서 2017년부터 시작된 이런 서비스는 데이팅, 교육, 연예, 주택, 요식업, 여행산업 등 다른 업계로 확산되고 있다.
이렇게 일정 금액으로 물건이나 서비스를 이용하는 것을 '구독경제'라고 부르는데 '구독'이란 용어는 신문의 정기구독에서 따온 것으로 '소유'나 '공유'에 이은 새로운 경제 모델이다. 이 얼마나 자유롭고 홀가분한 세상인가. 어차피 우리 모두 인생 나그네 입장에서 말이다.
칼릴 지브란 (1883-1931) 의 '방랑자'(1932)에 나오는 '또 다른 방랑자'를 살펴보자.
언젠가 나는 길벗 나그네 하나를 만났다. 그도 나처럼 좀 이상한 친구였다. 그가 말하기를:
"난 방랑자다. 그런데 내가 키 작은 난장이들과 함께 걷고 있는 느낌이야. 이들보다 내 머리가 땅으로부터 70 큐빗이나 높이 있기에 내 생각이 더 좀 높고 자유롭기 때문인 것 같아.
그러나 사실은 내가 이들과 함께 걷는다기 보다 이들 위로 걷기 때문에 이들이 볼 수 있는 건 들판에 난 내 발자국일 뿐이지.
그러니 이들은 내 발자국 크기와 모양에 대해 이러쿵 저러쿵 말들이 많아. 어떤 이들은 옛날에 지구에 있다가 멸종한 코끼리과의 포유동물 맘모스 발자국이라 하고 또 어떤 이들은 먼 별에서 날아온 별똥별 유성이 떨어진 자리들이라고 하지.

How To Be Free In Body And Soul
Now we are entering a new kind of New Age. It started in auto industry since 2017. It is called ‘subscription economy’. In place of all the hassles and headaches for purchasing or leasing, insurance, license, maintenance, tax, etc., you just pay a subscription fee to a service company that takes care of everything for you, while you pick and choose what model of a car you want whenever you need it.
Imagine this trend spreading into other industries, say dating, education, entertainment, housing, restaurant and travel businesses. What a free lifestyle to be detached from it all in body and soul!
After all, aren’t we all are wanderers?
Nevertheless, we are reminded that there’s THE OTHER WANDERER in The Wanderer: His Parables and Sayings(1932) by Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931).
THE OTHER WANDERER
Once on a time I met another man of the roads.
He too was a little mad, and thus he spoke to me:
