*1st Reading: 1 Kings 19:4-8 Elijah given bread for his journey But he(Elijah) himself went a day's

he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him,
"Get up and eat.”He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water.
He ate and drank and lay down again. The angel of the LORD came a second time, touched him, and
said, "Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” He got up and ate and drank; then he

Psalm 34:1-8 Taste and see I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my

“Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel
the prophet, standing in the holy place—let the reader understand— then those who are in Judea
must flee to the mountains.” (Jesus’ words in Matthew 24:15)

As fascinated as I, as a young person growing up in semi-rural Michigan, was with the local library
section devoted to biographies, I never became seriously aware of the biblical figure of Daniel until I
was twenty-two years old.
저는 미시간의 반시골 마을에서 자라난 젊은이였습니다. 지금의 열정만큼 당시에도 열정이 있어서
저는 지역도서관에 가서 사람들의 자서전 보기를 좋아했습니다. 그러나 저는 21살이 될 때까지

I’d been fascinated with the life stories of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson,
Daniel Webster and Winston Churchill, and many others.
저는 조지 워싱턴, 아브라함 링컨, 스톤웰 잭슨, 다니엘 웹스터, 윈스톤 처칠 그외 여러 인물들에
매료되었습니다.
I suppose that I assumed then that whatever I needed to know about biblical personages would be
covered during Sunday’s worship service or religion class at school. All that changed, however, when
Jesus confronted me in the final days of my 21st year.
저는 성경속 인물중 알아야할 사람들은 학교의 종교수업이나 주일예배시간에 다루어 주시리라
생각했던 것입니다. 그러나 제가 21살이던 마지막 날에 예수님을 만난이후로 모든 것이 바뀌었습니다.
It was a glorious encounter and the change He wrought in me has endured for 52 years until today.
One of the greatest discoveries at that time was the utterly unique Word of God contained in the Bible.
그것은 놀라운 만남이었습니다. 그리고 주님이 내안에서 일으키신 변화는 오늘날까지 52년동안
유지되어왔습니다. 당시에 가장 위대한 발견중의 하나는 성경에 나타난 놀랍고 독톡한 하나님의
말씀이었습니다.
No longer perceived as a monotonous list of religious rules, God’s Word literally came alive to my
heart and mind. Paramount in this discovery were the eternal words of Jesus as God’s chosen
Messiah.
하나님의 말씀은 저에게 그저 단조로운 종교적 규칙들의 목록에 불과하지 않았습니다. 주님의 말씀은
제 마음에 살아움직이며 다가왔습니다. 그러한 발견 중에 최고의 발견은 하나님의 선택하신
메시야로서 예수님의 영원한 말씀이었습니다.
But as my reading expanded to the Old Testament as well as the New, I came upon this utterly
remarkable young man swept up in the Babylonian Captivity of the children of the tribe of Judah in
586 BC.
그러나 제가 신약성경과 구약성경을 모두 섭렵하면서, 기원전 586년 바벨론에 잡혀간
유다지파의놀라운 소년을 성경속에서 만나게 되었습니다.
Perhaps only aged 17 to 21 at the time, Daniel and three of his friends from Jerusalem’s aristocratic
families were chosen by the conquering King Nebuchadnezzar to study the language, sciences and
culture of the Babylonians, destined to one day serve in the king’s court as advisors.
아마도 당시 다니엘과 세 친구들은 17살에서 21살 정도로 보입니다. 이들은 예루살렘의 귀족집안
출신의 소년들로 느부갓네살 왕이 예루살렘을 점령하고 뽑아간 자들입니다. 느브갓네살 왕은 이
소년들에게 언어, 과학 그리고 바벨론의 문화 등을 가르쳤고 언젠가 왕의 모사들로서 섬기게 될
운명이었습니다.
Integrity and courage— Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meschech and Abednego, were ordered by
the king’s courtier to consume the food and drink from the king’s table, a very unique privilege in
Babylonian eyes.
진실함과 용기-----다니엘과 그의 친구들 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고는 왕에게 명령을 받았는데, 왕의
식탁에서 음식과 음료를 먹도록 하는 것이었습니다. 이것은 바벨론 사람의 눈에는 대단한
특권이었습니다.
Nevertheless Daniel, as a devout Jew, recoiled from the Babylonian practice of food and drink first
being offered to heathen gods before meals.

거절했습니다.
Although other Judean expatriates surely compromised their religious convictions to avoid draconian
punishment, the Bible notes that Daniel and his three friends arranged a private test given by their
eunuch overseer to eat only vegetables and water for ten days.
바벨론의 다른 유대인들은 엄격한 처벌을 피하기 위해서 종교적 신념을 타협했음에도 불구하고,
성경은 다니엘과 세친구들이 열흘동안 채식만하고 물만 먹으면서 어떤 결과가 나올지 테스트해보라고

When the eunuch saw the faces of the four Jewish expats were healthier and rosier than the other
students, they were allowed to continue their kosher diet following the dietary laws of Moses.(Daniel
Ch.1)
환관장은 이 네명의 유대소년들의 얼굴이 더욱 건강하고 활력있는 것을 확인하고는 모세의 율법대로
코셔 음식을 계속 먹도록 허락했습니다.
Prayer and supernatural insight—In the second chapter of Daniel, another crisis arises that again
threatens the very lives of the four Israelites in the Babylonian court. By this time, the four had
graduated from their preparatory course and were installed as wise men or counselors to King
Nebuchadnezzar.
기도와 초자연적인 통찰력----다니엘서 2장에는 바벨론 법정에서 이 네 명의 이스라엘 소년들은 목숨이
위태로운 또 다른 위기를 만납니다. 이때까지만 해도 이 네 사람은 예비학교를 졸업하고
느부갓네살왕의 모사로서 임명되었습니다.
The king’s sleep one night was deeply disturbed by a dream, the details of which he could not recall.
The king assembled his advisors and demanded, by penalty of death, that they provide the exact
details of the dream…and its interpretation, too!
어느날 밤 왕이 꿈을 꾸웠는데 매우 심란했고, 어떤 꿈인지 기억조차 나지 않았습니다. 왕은 모사들을
불러서 꿈의 내용과 해석을 말하지 않으면 사형에 처하겠다고 말했습니다.
Daniel and his three friends refused to panic, but immediately fell to their knees and fervently sought
God’s guidance on how to proceed.
다니엘과 세 친구들은 패닉에 빠지지 않고, 즉시 하나님께 무릎을 꿇고 엎드려서 어떻게 해야 좋을지
하나님의 인도하심을 요청했습니다.
They were not disappointed. God gave Daniel the specific details of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and its
interpretation that included the extraordinary foresight of four empires that would succeed Babylon,
followed by a kingdom heaven (Dn.2:39-45)
그들은 실망하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 다니엘에게 느부갓네살왕의 꿈을 자세히 알려주셨고 해석까지
알려주셨습니다. 이 해석은 바벨론 이후에 일어날 4개 대제국에 대한 예언이 포함된 것으로 마침내는
하나님의 나라가 도래할 것을 예언했습니다. (다니엘 2:39-45)
So impressed was the king with the skill and insight given Daniel that he was promoted to prime
minister of the empire.(2:48)
왕은 다니엘의 능력과 통찰력에 깊은 감명을 받고 다니엘을 전 제국의 총리로 승진시켰습니다.(2:48)
Daniel’s ordeal being thrown in the lion’s den is a foreshadowing of the unjust accusations lodged
against Jesus’ and His crucifixion—Just as Paul told Timothy that all who will strive to live godly lives
will suffer persecution, so it held true in Daniel’s case.(Dn.5:29-6:2). Jealous government colleagues
sought Daniel’s demise, but God did not allow it!(6:22)
다니엘이 억울하게 사자굴에 던져진 일은 불공정한 재판을 받고 십자가에 죽으신 예수님을 예표하는
사건입니다. 바울이 디모데에게 말하기를 누구든지 경건하게 살고자 하는 자는 박해를 받으리라고
말한것이 다니엘에게 일어난 일을 설명해줍니다. (단 5:29-6:2) 시기가 가득찬 정부 관료들이 다니엘을
죽이려고 했지만 하나님은 그것을 허용하지 않으셨습니다!(6:22)
A) Faith in Action: North Korean underground Christians express deep gratitude for thousands of
vegetable seed packets and children's medicine sent by HHK to bolster the health and daily nutrition
of their congregations.
A) 행동하는 믿음: 북한의 지하교회 교인들이 HHK에서 보내준 수천개의 씨앗과 약품들로 인하여
청중들의 건강과 영양상태가 좋아졌다고 감사의 뜻을 전해왔습니다.
In hand-carried (from China) letters dated June of this year, several pastors of the North Korean
secret house church sent secure written assurances to HHK assuring us that Catacombs’ volunteers’
weekly labors to package seeds were indeed reaching individual ‘kitchen gardens’ in the North!
올해 6월에 중국으로부터 손으로 전달된 편지에서 지하교회의 몇몇 북한 목회자들이 전해왔습니다.
HHK 봉사자들이 친히 포장한 씨앗들이 실제로 북한 사람들의 텃밭에까지 무사히 도착했다고
전했습니다!
What follows is a brief excerpt from one of those letters plus a list (at left)of the varieties of seeds and
their total weight (in kilos) received at a key distribution point in April and May of this year.
다음은 그 편지들 가운데서 발췌한 내용이며 거기에 더불어 올해 4월과 5월에 배분시점에 받게 된
씨앗의 품종과 총 무게의 리스트입니다
“Dear Brother, Our NK underground church believers are doing well by our God’s grace and mercy,
allowing us to follow in His footsteps.
“사랑하는 형제님, 우리 북한의 지하교회 신자들은 하나님의 자비와 은혜가운데 잘 살고 있으며 주님의
길을 가고 있습니다.
We well-received your food support and a great number of boxes of various medicines. The harvest
this year will not be good due to natural disasters (e.g.flooding), a lack of fertilizer and the NK
government’s own bad seeds.
우리는 여러분이 보내주신 식량과 많은 의약품 박스를 잘 받았습니다. 올해는 자연재해와 비료부족
그리고 북한 정부에서 공급한 저품질의 씨앗으로 인해 추수작황이 좋지 않을 것으로 보입니다.
The urgent task of our NK church is to help our believers find food supplies as soon as possible. It
has only been possible due to God’s provision through you and fellow supporters in Christ.
북한 교회의 긴급한 과제는 신자들이 빠른 시일내에 식량을 공급받을 곳을 찾는 것입니다. 여러분과
그리스도안의 후원자들을 통한 하나님의 공급하심으로만 가능한 일입니다.
Your support has helped us [with daily survival] and to be able to keep our faith firm. For this we
thank you, praying for your well-being in God’s grace and blessings!—NK pastors”

*Ephesians 4:25-5:2 Put away evil, live in love So then, putting away falsehood, let each of you
speak the truth with your neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do
not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Those who steal must
give up stealing; rather, let them labor, doing good work with their own hands, so as to have
something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths but only what is good for
building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve
the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away

Archaeologists may have proven the existence of a long-lost temple where Jesus is said to
have performed miracles.

Several passages in the New Testament describe how He preached and healed the sick inside a
synagogue in the ancient Israeli city of Chorazin.
신약의 여러 기사들은 고대 이스라엘의 도시인 고라신의 회당에서 예수님께서 병든 자를 고치시고
설교하셨다고 기록했습니다.
A synagogue built in 380 AD was discovered in the early 1900s, but there was no physical evidence
dating it back to the times of Jesus - until now.
서기 380년에 세워진 회당은 1900년대 초에 발견되었지만 이것이 예수님 당시까지 거슬러 올라간다는
물질적 증거는 현재까지 없습니다.
Lead archaeologist Achia Cohen-Tavor and his team removed the floor of the third-century ruins,
finding giant boulders that had been been put in specific arrangements.

The team went to work removing the giant rocks, finding pottery, coins and cookware nestled between

most evidence of first-century dwellings ever found in the region. (Matthew 11:20-21)
