(세계교회선교탐방) 이기풍선교기념관 눈물로 다시 세워야 할 제주의 복음의 자리
제주의 바람은 오늘도 그 자리를 스쳐 지나간다.
그러나 문은 굳게 닫혀 있고, 마당에는 잡초만 무성하다.
한때 기도의 발걸음이 이어지던 길은 사람의 온기 대신 적막만이 흐른다.
그곳은 단순한 건물이 아니다. 제주에 처음 복음의 씨앗을 심었던 순교자
이기풍 목사의 헌신을 기억하기 위해 세워진 거룩한 터전이다.
이기풍 목사는 생명을 걸고 제주 땅을 밟았다.
낯선 섬, 거센 바람, 차가운 시선 속에서도 그는 물러서지 않았다.
복음 한 자루를 품고 사람들의 마음을 두드렸고
핍박 속에서도 무릎 꿇어 기도했다. 그의 눈물은 제주의 흙에 스며들었고
그의 외침은 이 땅의 영혼을 흔들었다.
그 작은 씨앗은 결국 교회가 되고, 예배가 되고, 믿음의 가정이 되었다.
그러나 오늘, 그를 기리는 기념관은 침묵 속에 서 있다.
코로나 팬데믹 이후 멈춰버린 발걸음 이어지지 못한 관심과 지원 속에서 건물은 점점 쇠락해가고 있다.
벽은 갈라지고, 창문은 빛을 잃었으며, 기억은 희미해지고 있다.
이것은 단지 한 시설의 노후화가 아니다. 우리의 영적 둔감함과 사명 의식의 퇴색을 보여주는 아픈 자화상이다.
우리는 묻지 않을 수 없다.
우리는 무엇을 지키고 있으며 무엇을 잃어버렸는가.
화려한 예배당과 다양한 프로그램 속에서 정작 복음의 뿌리는 잊고 있지 않은가.
기념관은 말없이 우리에게 질문한다.
“너희는 지금 누구의 이름을 위해 사는가.”
그 물음 앞에서 우리는 쉽게 고개를 들지 못한다.
순교자의 피와 눈물 위에 세워진 교회가 그 정신을 이어가고 있는지 돌아보게 된다.
지금 필요한 것은 책임을 따지는 일이 아니라 회복을 향한 결단이다.
건물을 다시 세우는 일은 곧 기억을 다시 세우는 일이며 믿음을 다시 세우는 일이다.
지역교회와 선교단체, 그리고 다음 세대가 함께 손을 잡고 이 복음의 터전을 복원해야 한다.
그곳을 선교 역사 교육의 장으로, 눈물의 기도를 배우는 공간으로 다시 살려내야 한다.
제주 복음의 역사는 아직 끝나지 않았다.
무너진 벽 앞에서 흘리는 우리의 눈물이 헛되지 않기를 바란다.
이제라도 우리가 무릎 꿇는다면,
폐허는 다시 소망의 터전이 될 것이다.
잊혀진 이름을 다시 부르고 꺼져가는 불씨를 다시 살릴 때
한국교회는 새로운 회복의 길로 나아갈 수 있다.
이기풍선교기념관을 다시 세우는 일은 건축의 문제가 아니다.
그것은 우리의 믿음과 양심을 다시 세우는 일이다.
눈물로 시작된 제주 선교의 역사를, 다시 눈물로 이어가야 할 때다.
이기풍선교기념관 — A Gospel Site That Must Be Raised Again in Tears
The wind of Jeju still passes over that place today.
Yet the doors remain tightly shut, and weeds overrun the courtyard.
The path once filled with footsteps of prayer now carries only silence.
This is not merely an old building. It is sacred ground established to honor
the devotion of the martyr 이기풍, the first to plant the seed of the Gospel on Jeju Island.
Pastor Lee Gi-Pung set foot on Jeju at the risk of his life.
On a distant island, amid fierce winds and colder indifference,
he did not retreat. Carrying nothing but the Gospel,
he knocked on h
earts and knelt in prayer even under persecution.
His tears soaked into the soil of Jeju, and his proclamation stirred its souls.
That small seed eventually became churches, worship gatherings, and families of faith.
Today, however, the memorial built to remember him stands in silence. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, footsteps have ceased. Without sustained care or support,
the building has steadily deteriorated. Walls crack, windows fade,
and memory itself grows dim. This is not simply the aging of a facility.
It is a painful reflection of our spiritual indifference and the fading of our sense of mission.
We cannot help but ask:
What have we preserved, and what have we lost?
Amid grand sanctuaries and countless programs,
have we forgotten the very roots of the Gospel?
The memorial asks us, without words:
“For whose name are you living now?”
Before that question, we struggle to lift our heads.
The Church built upon the blood and tears of martyrs must ask
whether it is truly carrying forward their spirit.
What is needed now is 
not blame, but restoration.
To rebuild the structure is to rebuild memory.
To restore the site is to restore faith.
Local churches, mission organizations,
and the next generation must join hands to revive this sacred ground. It must once again become a place where the history
of missions is taught and where the tears of prayer are learned.
The history of the Gospel in Jeju is not over.
May the tears we shed before these crumbling walls not be in vain.
If we kneel once more, the ruins can become a place of hope again.
When we call back the forgotten name and rekindle the fading flame, the Korean Church may step into a new path of renewal.
To restore this memorial is not merely a matter of construction.
It is a matter of rebuilding our faith and our conscience.
The mission in Jeju began with tears.
Now it is time to continue it with tears once again.
