유엔군사령부는 2018년 7월 27일 금요일, 주한미군의 지원하에 55개의 유해 관을 북한으로 부터 송환 받았다. 미군 수송기가 북한 원산에서 유해를 싣고 오산 공군기지에 오전 11시에 도착하였다.
“It was a successful mission following extensive coordination,” said UNC and USFK Commander General Vincent K. Brooks. “Now, we will prepare to honor our fallen before they continue on their journey home.”
빈센트 브룩스 유엔사/주한미군 사령관은 “광범위한 협조로 이루어진 성공적인 임무였으며 이제 우리는 전사한 장병들의 유해가 본국으로 송환 되기전 이들의 명예를 추모할 수 있도록 준비할 것” 이라고 밝혔다.
General Brooks will host a full honors ceremony, Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. KST. Immediately following that ceremony, the remains will be flown to Hawaii for further processing under the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
브룩스 사령관의 주관으로 추모식을 8월 1일 수요일 오후 5시에 개최할 예정이다. 행사 직후 유해는 신원확인작업을 위해 하와이에 위치한 미국 국방부 산하 전쟁포로/실종자확인국(DPAA)으로 옮길 예정이다.
국군 전사자 유해 송환은 언제쯤 이루어질지......
