“뭣보다 먼저 반짝이는 눈으로 네 주위의 온 세상을 유심히 관찰하라. 가장 큰 비밀들은 가장 뜻밖의 장소에 숨겨져 있으니까. 마법(魔法)이나 신기법술(神奇法術)을 믿지 않는 사람은 발견할 수 없다. And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
영국 작가 로알드 달(Roald Dahl 1916-1990)의 말이다. 미증유(未曾有)의 코로나 팬데믹으로 한 해가 저무는 이때에 우리가 절실히 성찰해야 할 3제(題)를 예시(例示)해 본다.
1. 코스미안으로 우화등선(羽化登仙)해야 할 독성(毒性) 인간
지지난해 옥스퍼드 사전이 '2018년의 단어'로 'Toxic'을 선정했다고 발표했다. Toxic은 독성이 있다는 뜻의 영어 단어다. 기후변화를 초래한 인간의 독성, 평화로운 인류사회를 파괴하는 정치풍토의 독성, 건전한 남녀관계를 해치는 남성의 폭력적인 독성(toxic masculinity)으로 촉발된 '미투운동 Me Too movement' 등을 반영한 것으로 보인다.
이 toxic이란 영어 단어는 '화살촉에 담는 독약(poison for arrows)'을 뜻하는 그리스어 'toxikon pharmakon'에서 유래한 말로 처음에는 독초(毒草)를 가리켰으나 점차로 그 의미가 확대되어 독성 있는 모든 것을 뜻하게 되었다.
우리가 섭취하는 음식물 중에도 독성이 있는 것과 영양분이 있는 것이 있다. 마찬가지로 대인관계에서도 해롭거나 이로운 관계가 있다. 그래서 음식물이나 사람들 중에 독성이 있는 것은 피하고 몸과 마음에 좋은 것만 취하는 지혜가 필요하다.
의학 용어 중에 대증요법(symptomatic therapy)과 원인요법(radical therapy)이 있다. 전자는 불편한 증상 혹은 급성 증상을 일시적으로 완화하는 임시치료 방법이고 후자는 질병의 근본 원인을 제거하는 치료법을 말한다. 흔히 동양의학은 원인을 치료하고 서양의학은 증상을 치료한다고 한다.
그렇다면 온 인류가 지구상의 모든 질병과 불행한 사태를 근본적으로 극복하고 예방하기 위해서는 어떻게 해야 할까. 인류공동체 구성원 모두는 자승자박의 근시안적 안목에서 벗어나 우주적 비전을 갖고 서로 사랑하는 상생의 길을 도모하는 것이 근본적 처방임이 날로 자명해지고 있지 않은가.
대증요법이 아닌 원인요법으로 우리 모두는 우주의 나그네인 '코스미안 Cosmian'임을 자각해야 한다. 그러기 위해 'Me Too'가 'Us All'의 코스미안 운동으로 발전하여, 2021년의 단어는 우주적 사랑을 묘사하는 형용사 'Cosmic' 또는 이를 실천하는 우주적 존재인 'Cosmian'이 되기를 기대해 본다. 우리가 사는 카오스 같은 세상이 아름다운 코스모스가 되도록.
1. Toxic Human to be sublimated into cosmic Cosmian
'Toxic' was chosen by Oxford Dictionaries as the international word of 2018, apparently reflecting the current toxic human-economical, environmental, political, sexual and societal-climate of the world, taking notice of the #MeToo movement triggered by 'toxic masculinity' in particular.
This English word 'toxic' comes from the Greek the 'toxikon pharmakon,' meaning 'poison for arrows.' (The part of the phrase meaning arrows, rather than poison, is said to have become the basis for the word, though.) Initially for its first few centuries, it literally meant poisonous plants but gradually its meaning expanded metaphorically to indicate anything harmful and deadly.
As there are toxic or nourishing food and drinks, it's the same with people, isn't it? Therefore, one should keep the toxic away and stick to what's good for one's body and soul.
Also as there are two different courses of treatment in medical terminology, namely, 'symptomatic therapy' that only affects its symptoms, not its cause, i.e., its etiology and 'radical therapy' that intends to cure, not palliate. They say that the eastern medicine treats the roots while the western medicine treats the outgrowth, believe it or not.
If so, likewise, the best treatment for all our ailments, problems, troubles and what not, must be to open up our innate cosmic vision for our expanded and extended self-realization as Cosmians, being 'cosmic', way above and beyond being chaotic and toxic, no more.
Hence, the #MeToo movement must be advanced to #UsAll Cosmian movement so that our current chaotic world will turn into the most beautiful and wonderful Cosmos as it was meant to be and, let's pray, 'Cosmic,’ or rather 'Cosmian’ will be chosen as the most becoming word of 2021.
2. 인성(人性)지수 HQ(Humanity Quotient) 아니 우성(宇性)지수CQ(Cosmian Quotient)를 높여야.
흔히 IQ（Intelligence Quotient)라 하는 지능지수는 좋은 학교나 직장에 들어가는 데는 도움이 되지만, 사회적으로 크게 성공할 수 있는가를 결정하는 것은 감성지수 EQ（Emotional Quotient)라고 한다. EQ라는 말은 하버드대 심리학과 교수 다니엘 골먼(Daniel Goleman,1946 ~ )의 1995년 저서 ‘Emotional Intelligence’가 뉴욕타임스 베스트셀러가 되면서 대중의 인기를 끌게 되었다.
최근에 한국인의 IQ가 전 세계 1위라는 기사가 났다. 영국의 심리학자 리차드 린(Richard Lynn, 1930 ~ )의 50년에 걸친 연구 논문의 결과물인 그의 저서 ‘인종 간의 지능 차이(Race Differences in Intelligence)’에 따르면 국가별 평균 지능이 가장 높은 나라는 수치 106을 기록한 한국이 단연 1위이고, 105의 일본이 2위, 104의 대만이 3위, 그 다음으로 102의 독일, 100의 중국, 98의 미국, 94의 이스라엘 순이다.
‘IQ’는 독일의 심리학자 윌리엄 스턴(William Stern, born Ludwig Wilhelm Stern, 1871 ~ 1938)이 처음 쓰기 시작한 독일어 단어가 그대로 영어로 옮겨진 것이다. 그리고 ‘intelligence’라는 단어는 ‘모으다, 수집하다’는 뜻의 인도유럽어 앞에 ‘중간, 사이’를 의미하는 ‘inter’가 붙은 것이다.
어떻든 IQ와 EQ 외에도 영성지수를 가리키는 SQ(Spiritual Quotient)란 단어까지 유행하고 있지만 인간이 한평생 행복하게 살기 위해서는 무엇보다 인종이나 국적, 남녀 성별, 사회계층, 빈부격차 등을 가릴 것도 없이 모든 사람이 각자의 인성지수HQ (Humanity Quotient)를 높여야 할 것이다. 나아가 자연지수 NQ (Nature Quotient)를 높히고 우리 모두의 천성(天性)의 우성(宇性)지수-사랑의 무지개 타고 지상으로 잠시 소풍 온 우주의 나그네- CQ(Cosmic/Cosmian Quotient)를 키워나가야 할 것이다.
2. HQ or rather CQ to be enhanced
People say that high IQ will help you to go to the college or to get the job you want. But how successful you will be is going to be decided by your EQ.
This word EQ is said to have been first coined by Harvard psychologist Daniel Goleman(1946 - ) in his 1955 book ‘Emotional Intelligence’, which became The New York Times bestseller.
It was recently reported that by nationality Korea ranked 1st in the world with its average IQ of 106, according to ‘Race Differences in Intelligence’ authored by British psychologist Richard Lynn (1930 - ), based on his almost 50-year-research studies.
Korea was followed by Japan with 105, Taiwan with 104, Germany with 102, China with 100, U.S.A. with 98 and Israel with 94.
IQ was first used, we are told, German psychologist William Stern, born Ludwig Wilhelm Stern (1871- 1938) in German, which was adopted into English. And the word ‘Intelligence’ is said to derive from Indo-European word meaning ‘gather, collect’, to which ‘inter’ that indicates ‘between, middle’ was added as a prefix.
Besides IQ and EQ, SQ(Spiritual Quotient) has been in general use in some quarters in recent years. Be that as it may, in order to live a happy life as a human being, regardless of nationality, race, sex or social class, one has to enhance, above all, one’s HQ(Humanity Quotient) and furthermore NQ(Nature Quotient), that is, our common cosmic vision CQ(Cosmic/Cosmian Quotient), encompassing us all as Cosmians born Arainbow of Love.
3. 중독(中毒)과 해독제(解毒劑)
올해는 코로나 팬데믹으로 상황과 사정이 다르지만 한 해가 저무는 연말이 되면 동창회나 크리스마스 파티, 흩어졌든 가족모임 등으로 인해 술을 마실 기회가 많아진다. 로마의 역사가 타키투스(Tacitus 56 AD-120 AD)는 고대 게르만 부족들이 전쟁 시 협상을 할 때면 술에 취했는데, 만취된 상태에서는 서로가 숨김없이 흥정이 가능했기 때문이라고 기록해 놓았다.
술에 취하면 평소에 안 하던 행동도 하게 되고 뜻밖의 사고도 종종 생기는 것 같다. 술에 취하면 전혀 딴사람이 되는 경우를 종종 보게 되는데, 술이 정신무장을 해제시켜 그 사람의 본성과 본색을 드러나게 하는 것인지 모를 일이다.
중독(中毒)을 한마디 영어로 직역하면 ‘intoxication’이다. 술과 담배 또는 마약뿐이 아니고 마약 같은 종교나 사상, 이념 등 온갖 허깨비에 사로잡혀, 모든 것을 흑과 백의 이분법으로 나누다 보면 우리가 사는 세상은 생지옥이 될 수밖에 없다. 이와 같은 중독에서 벗어나 해독하는 것을 힌디어와 영어로는 'detoxification'이라 한다. 이런 만병통치의 해독제(detoxicant) 라면 세상에 사랑 말고 또 뭐가 있으랴.
그럼 '사랑'이란 무엇일까? 미국의 노벨문학상 수상작가 토니 모리슨(Toni Morrison, 1931-2019)의 말을 곱씹어 보자.
"누구나 처음으로 인류의 한 부분은 나와 '다르다'는 가르침을 받게 되었을 때를 기억할 것이다..... 이는 마치 내가 네게 네 왼손이 네 몸의 한 부분이 아니라고 하듯 말이다
얼핏 보면 이상의 두 문장이 서로 상반되는 모순 같지만 다시 좀 새겨보면 이해할 수 있고, 나아가 깊이 공감할 수 있게 되지 않는가. 둘째 문장이 역설적으로 상기시키는 것은 첫 문장이 전혀 불필요한 '말하면 잔소리' 영어로 표현하자면 'Needless to say/It goes without saying'이란 말이다.
그러니 우리가 진정으로 '나' 자신, 내 온몸을 사랑한다면 머리끝부터 발끝까지, 내 몸의 각 부분과 그 세포들까지 다 존중하고 사랑할 수밖에 없다는 만고의 진리를 더할 수 없이 명쾌하게 밝힌 것이리라.
아, 그래서 미국의 심령술 영능력자(靈能力者) 교사(敎師)로 유명한 로라 린 잭슨도 2019년에 출간된 그녀의 저서 ‘전조(前兆): 우주의 신비한 언어’에서 “우린 모두 같은 나무의 다른 가지에 달린 나뭇잎들이다.”
이렇게 말했듯이 우주라는 나무의 여러 다른 가지에 달린 ‘나뭇잎들’이 바로 코스미안이란 우리 자신들이란 말이어라.
3. Intoxication and Detoxicant
As another year is coming to a close, even though it’s quite different this year because of Corona pandemic, people tend to have more occasions to drink in gatherings of scattered family members, alumni and friends. Roman historian Tacitus (Pablius Cornelius Tacitus, C. 55 - A.D. 117) recorded: Ancient Germanic tribes would hold wartime negotiations drunk, reasoning that it made all parties incapable of hiding anything.
When drunk, one often becomes 'not oneself, not like her/him', under the influence of alcohol, sometimes causing extraordinary accidents. This may be due to disarmament of the drunkard to expose her/his so far concealed true color and nature to the world.
One can be intoxicated, not only with alcohol, nicotine or drug, but more prevalently and predominantly with political, religious and social ideologies. Lo and behold, as long as humanity is gripped by this 'black and white' false dichotomy, the world cannot help being a 'living hell' for so many underprivileged people.
The only panacean detoxicant for this deadly intoxication is none other than 'love'. Won't it be? What then is this 'love'?
Let's reflect upon what Toni Morrison (1931-2019), the American writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993, says:
“Everybody remembers the first time they were taught that part of the human race was Other..... It's as though I told you that your left hand is not part of your body.”
The above quoted two sentences at first sound like contradicting each other. However, on second thought, it is easily understood that the first statement goes without saying, needless to say.
So, if one truly loves oneself, one's whole body, one has to love and respect every part of it, each cell of the part, head to toe, she must have made this eternal self-help home truth abundantly clear.
As Laura Lynne Jackson, the famous high school English teacher and psychic medium says in her 2019 book ‘Signs: The Secret Language of the Universe’ says: “We are all leaves on different branches of the same tree,” we all are, indeed, Cosmians, leaves of Cosmic Tree!
