사랑과 자비심(慈悲心)은 필수품(必需品)이지 사치품(奢侈品)이 아니다. 없어서는 인류의 생존이 불가능하다. Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.

1970년대 내가 젊은 시절 읽고 기억에 남는 글 하나가 떠오른다. 한국어로도 번역 소개되어 잘 알려진 영국의 철학자 버트랜드 러셀(Bertrand Arthur William Russell 1872-1970)의 자서전 서문 “뭘 위해 내가 살아왔나 What I Have Lived For”에 나오는 말이다.
“세 가지 단순하나 압도적으로 강렬한 열정이 내 삶을 지배해 왔다. 사랑과 지식과 인류가 겪는 고통에 대해 견디기 힘든 연민의 정(情)이다. Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.”
여기서 그가 말하는 ‘사랑’은 남녀 간의 로맨틱 사랑(romantic love)이고, ‘지식(智識/知識)’이란 진리탐구(眞理探究)이며, ‘연민(憐愍/憐憫)’이란 인류애(人類愛)를 뜻한다. 이는 우리 모든 코스미안의 가장 중요한 일 아니랴. 그의 영문 서문 전문을 인용해 보리라.
Description: This is the prologue to the Autobiography of Bertrand Russell, written on 25 July 1956 in his own hand. The text follows:
PROLOGUE. WHAT I HAVE LIVED FOR.
Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind.
These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness-that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what-at last-I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
Bertrand Russell won the Nobel prize for literature for ‘A History of Western Philosophy (1945)’ and was the co-author (with Alfred North Whitehead 1861-1947) of ‘Principia Mathematica (1910)'
그러니 생전에 그는 이런 말도 했으리라.
“그 어떤 신중함보다 참된 행복에 가장 치명적인 것은 어쩌면 사랑에 신중함이다. Of all forms of caution, caution in love is perhaps the most fatal to true happiness.”
우리 미국의 제16대 대통령 에이브러햄 링컨(Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865)이 남녀 간의 사랑에 대해 한 말도 음미해보리라.
“어떤 여인이 나와 운명을 같이 하기로 결정한다면 나는 전력을 다해 그 여인을 행복하고 만족하게 해주리라. 이렇게 하는데 실패한다면 이보다 더 나를 불행하고 비참하게 하는 일은 없으리라. Whatever woman may cast her lot with mine, should any ever do so, it is my intention to do all in my power to make her happy and contended; there is nothing I can imagine that would make me more unhappy than to fail in the effort.”
우리 김구(金九 1876-1949) 선생님의 말씀도 되새겨보리라.
“대붕역풍비 생어역수영(大鵬逆風飛 生魚逆水泳), 커다란 새는 바람을 거슬러 날고, 살아 있는 물고기는 물을 거슬러 헤엄친다.”
“사랑의 문화와 평화의 문화로 우리 스스로 잘 살고 더불어 인류 전체가 의좋고 즐겁게 살도록 하자. 네 인생의 발전을 원하거든 너 자신의 과거를 엄하게 스스로 비판하고, 한마음 한뜻으로 덕을 쌓고 네 앞날을 개척할지어다. 마음속의 3.8선이 무너져야 땅 위의 3.8선도 무너질 수 있다.
인류 전체로 보면 현재의 자연과학만으로도 충분히 편안하게 살아갈 수 있다. 인류가 불행해지는 근본 이유는 인의(仁義)가 부족하고, 자비(慈悲)가 부족하며, 사랑이 부족한 까닭이다. 개인의 자유를 주창하되, 그것은 저 짐승들과 마찬가지로 저마다 자기의 배를 채우기에 급급한 그런 자유가 아니라 제 가족을 제 이웃을 제 국민을 잘살게 하는 자유이어야 한다.
또한 공원의 꽃을 꺾을 자유가 아니라, 공원에 꽃을 심는 자유여야 한다. 우리는 남의 것을 빼앗거나 남의 덕을 입으려는 사람이 아니라, 가족에게, 이웃에게, 동포에게 나눠주는 것을 보람으로 삼는 사람들이다. 이른바 선비요, 점잖은 사람들인 것이다.
사랑하는 처자를 가진 가장은 부지런할 수밖에 없다. 한없이 주기 위함이다. 힘든 일은 제가 앞서 행하니 그것은 사랑하는 동포를 아낌이요, 즐거운 것은 남에게 권하니 이는 사랑하는 자가 잘되길 바라기 때문이다. 우리 조상이 추구했던 인후지덕(仁厚之德)이란 것이 그런 것이다.”
앞에 인용한 러셀의 ‘뭘 위해 내가 살아왔나’를 우리 모두 스스로에게 물어볼 일 아닌가. 우리 모두 하나같이 사랑의 구도자(求道者) 코스미안이라면 말이어라.
자, 이제 다음과 같은 말들도 우리 깊이 음미하고 명심불망(銘心不忘)해야 하리라.
세상살이를 법(法)-다르마(Dharma 산스크리트어, 담마 Dhamma 빠알리어)를 한문으로 번역한것. 달마達磨는 다르마를 한문으로 음사/음역한 것-에 장애물로 보는 사람은 일상 매사에서도 이 법을 보지 못하고, 이 법 다르마에서 벗어나는 어떤 일상 행동도 있을 수 없음을 깨닫지 못한 것이다.
Those who see worldly life as an obstacle to Dharma see no Dharma in everyday actions. They have not yet discovered that there are no everyday actions outside of Dharma.

모든 고통과 수난은 한 가지 (잘못된) 믿음에서 생긴다. 곧 인연생기(因緣生起)라고 인(因: 직접적인 원인)과 연(緣:간접적 원인) 따라 생겨남의 준말 연기(緣起)를 깨닫지 못하고, 모든 일이 별개로 분리(分離)된 거라는 미신(迷信) 말이다.
