‘보헤미안 랩소디’는 영국의 록 밴드 ‘퀸’과 이 밴드의 전설적 리드 싱어 프레디 머큐리의 뮤지컬로 전 세계적으로 선풍적인 인기를 끌고 있는데, 한국에서도 예상 밖으로 최근 관객이 600만명을 넘어섰다고 한다.  
 
프레디는 모든 고정관념에 도전하며 관습을 깬 가수였다.  
 
여기서 우리는 고정관념이나 편견, 전통, 인습, 관습 등이 무엇인지 한번 생각해 볼 필요가 있다.  
 
흔히들 전통은 이어갈 가치가 있는 대대로 내려오는 의례나 의식이고, 인습은 오래 전부터 해오던 것인데 안 좋은 것을 말하며, 그리고 관습은 전통과 인습이 섞인 개념이라고 한다. 
 
보헤미안이라면 현재 체코 공화국의 서부지방 보헤미아에서 유래한 단어로 관습에 얽매이지 않고 자유분방하게 특히 예술적으로 사는 삶과 그런 사람을 지칭한다. 
 
인류역사를 통해 동서양 가릴 것 없이 어느 지역과 사회를 막론하고 사람들은 종교적, 정치적, 사회적으로 구속을 받아 오고 있다. 
 
군중심리란 말이 있듯이 많은 사람들이 마치 ‘골빈당’ 같이 잘못 세뇌되고 오도되어, 온갖 부자연스럽고 비인도적인 만행을 저질러오고 있는 것이다. 
 
몇 가지 예를 들면 원죄, 선민, 백인우월주의, 남녀차별, 마녀사냥, 정조대, 여성 성기 절제, 전족, 명예살인, 인종말살/인종청소 등 천하의 몹쓸 짓이 계속되고 있는 것은 우리의 참된 우주적 정체성을 깨닫지 못한 까닭에서 이리라.  다름 아닌 코스미안으로서 말이다.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is a musical film about British rock band Queen and its lead singer Freddie Mercury.  It is a worldwide hit, watched by more than six million people in South Korea alone, it was recently reported. 
 
Freddie is described as having “defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet.”
 
Let’s think about the conventional wisdom of following the crowd, called convention, custom and tradition, mindlessly just ‘going with the flow’, so to speak. 
 
It is usually said that tradition is something long-established; convention is a traditional method or style (of behaving that is considered to be correct or polite by most people in a society; and custom is a traditional and widely accepted way of behaving or doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time. 
 
Bohemian derives from Bohemia, the westernmost and largest historical region of the Czech lands in the present day Czech Republic and denotes the lifestyle or the people of living an artistic, open-minded, unconventional and unencumbered life. 
 
Throughout human history all over the world, most people have been bound by all kinds of boundary, such as class, nationality, race, sex, imposed by ideology, politics, religion.  They have been misled and influenced by mob psychology.
 
To cite a few examples, they are the ‘original sin’, the ‘chosen people’, black and white mindset/white supremacy, sex discrimination, sexual orientation, witch hunt, chastity belt, female genital mutilation, feet binding, honor killing, ethnic cleansing/genocide, etc. 
 
All these most horrendous, inhuman and unnatural barbarities have been in practice due to our failure to realize that we are born boundless as Cosmians. 
 
So, let’s sing along our Cosmian Cantata altogether, now and forever.
