잊혀진 사람들

 

1125일은 추수감사절(Thanksgiving day)이다크로스토퍼 컬럼버스가 실수로 인도인줄 알고 도착한 아메리카가 우리가 인디언이라고 부르는 ‘네이티브 아메리칸들에게는 기막힌 악연과 비극의 씨앗이 되고 말았다.

 컬럼버스가 아메리카 대륙에 처음 도착했을  그들은 신대륙의 발견이라고 했지만 이미 이곳에는 수천년 전부터 원주민들이 살고 있었으며  숫자가 수천만 명에서 1억에 달했을 것으로 추정한다그러나 이후 미국의 계속된 인디언 말살정책으로 지금은 대략 4백만명 정도가 남아있으며 그마저도 ‘인디언 보호구역’(Indian reservation)이라는 백인들이 쳐놓은 창살 없는 감옥에 갇혀 살면서 술과 마약을  삼아 아무런 희망도 낙도 없는 슬픈 하루하루를 살아가고 있는 것이 오늘날 인디언들의 현실이다.

 땅에는 수많은 소수민족이 함께 어우러져 살아가지만 인디언들처럼 철저히 잊혀진 민족은 없다미국의 주류 언론도 그들에게만은 잔인할 정도로 냉정하게 외면하고 관심을 두지 않았다컬럼버스가 첫발을 내디딜   땅의 주인인 인디언들에게 허락을 받고 들어왔는가비자나 영주권을 받고 들어왔는가자유와 인권을 최고의 가치라고  소리로 외치며 세계의 경찰을 자청하는 미국이 세계평화를 논하기 전에 네이티브 아메리칸들에게 저지른 무자비한 살육과 비인권적 행위에 대한 비판과 자성성찰의 시간이 필요한 때가 아닌가 싶다.



오래전 캘리포니아에서 선교활동을 하던 어느 사제는 스페인 본국에 보낸 편지에서 “여기 있는 인디언들은 이미 산상수훈을  지키고 있는듯하여 그들에게 무엇을 선교해야할지 모르겠습니다이들은 너무도 선하여 자신이 가진 것을 조건 없이 나누며 천국시민처럼 살아가고 있습니다.”라고 썼다상황이 이러한데도 서부개척이라는 미명으로 자행된 인디언 추방과 학살말살 정책은 저항하는 인디언들의 여자와 어린이들까지 잔인하게 살해하는 백인들의 잔악함을 드러낸 것이었다.

실제로 1830 앤드류 잭슨 대통령은 인디언 강제이주령이라는 악법을 제정하고 동남부 더운 지역에 살던 인디언들 15,000명을 1,600킬로미터가 넘는 오클라호마까지 이주시켰는데 그때 맨발로 행군을 하는 5개월 동안 추위와 굶주림질병학대고문피로누적 등으로 체로키 부족 인구의 ¼ 넘는 4,000 이상이 죽었다  맺힌 길을 그들은 ‘눈물의 이라고 부른다.

호주나 캐나다에서도 원주민들에 대한 백인들의 불평등과 말살정책이 만연했지만 미국보다 앞서 그들에게 진정성 있는 사과를 했다그에 따른 새로운 정책으로 아직도 주류사회에 편입되지 못하고 2 국민이나 열악한 환경에서 살아가는 사람들이 많으나 미국에 비하면 그래도 사정이 나은 것으로 보인다.

버려진 물도 없고 나무 한그루  한포기 자라지 못하는 땅에 버려진 그들… 인간적 삶이란 기대할  없는 그들을 위해 우리가   있는 것은 진정 아무것도 없는 것일까?

인디언들의 입장에서 보면 지금  땅에 살고 있는 모든 미국인은 불법 체류자들이다. 1620 백인 필그림들이 플러머스 항구에 도착하여 추위와 굶주림으로 죽어갈  인디언들이 도와주지 않았으면 어떻게 되었을까추수감사절에 과연 누굴 위해 감사해야하는가생각해볼 일이다.

미국에선 매년 11월 넷째 주 목요일이 추수감사절Thanksgiving Day국가 공휴일로 이 날은 흩어져 있던 가족들이 모여 칠면조 Turkey 요리를 먹으면서 즐기는 날이지만 칠면조들뿐만 아니라 미대륙 원주민 인디언들에게는 말하자면 재2차 대전 중 유태인 들이 당한 홀로코스트The Holocaust’와도 같은 날이다

 

홀로코스트(Holocaust, 그리스어  hólos(전체)+kaustós(타다)에서 유래또는 쇼아(히브리어: השואה, 이디시어חורבן) 제2차세계대전  아돌프 히틀러가 이끈 국가사회주의 독일 노동자당이 나치독일과 독일군 점령지 전반에 걸쳐 계획적으로 유태인과슬라브족, 롬, 동성애자, 장애인, 정치범   11백만 명의 민간인과 전쟁포로를 학살한 사건을 의미한다. 사망자  유태인은  6백만여명으로 당시 유럽에 거주하던 9백만 명의 유대인   2/3 해당한다. 유태인 어린이  백만 명이 죽었으며여자  2백만 명과 남자  3백만 명이 죽은 것으로 파악된다.[3] 유태인과 기타 피해자들은 독일 전역과 독일 점령지의  4만여개의 시설에 집단 수용구금되어 사망하게 되었다.[출처위키백과]

 

이런 유태인들이 우리 한국인들에게 좋은 반면교사가   있으리 타민족 가운데는 한국인을 동양의 유태인이라 한다지 않나우리 자신을 잠시 돌아보자 청년 노동자의 삶과 죽음이 떠오른 서울평화시장에서 일하던 노동자 전태일은 1948 8 26 대구에서 태어나 1970 11 13 평화시장  길거리에서 스물 둘의 나이로 몸을 불살라 죽었다사람들은 그의 죽음을 ‘인간선언’ 이라 부른다. "인간을 물질화하는 세대 인간이 인간으로서  모든 것을 박탈당하고 있는  무시무시한 시대나는 절대로 어떠  불의와도 타협하지 않을 것이며동시에 어떤 불의도 묵과하지 않고 시정하려고 노력할 "이라며 그는 싸웠고 그는 죽어 갔다.

2021 9 4일자 뉴욕판 중앙일보 오피니언 [삶의 뜨락칼럼 '그대필자 정명숙 시인은 우리와 같은 몽고족인 아메리칸 원주민 인디언의 수난사를 이렇게 추적해보고 있다.

아메리카 인디언들은 살아 있는 모든 것들을 그냥 ‘그대라고 부른 다고 한다 자체로 존중이고 사랑이다자연은 인간의 소유물이 아니라 인간이 자연의 일부라고 믿고 자연의 섭리에 충실하며 가장 자연 친화적이고 아름다운 자연에 순응하며 살았다



인디언들은 춘추전국시대의 중국인들이나 그리스 로마 시대 이래 유럽인들처럼 서로 땅따먹기로 싸우지 않고 평화롭게 연대하며 사는 놀라운 지혜를 보여주었다. 1620 100 명의 영국인 청교도 들이 종교의 박해를 피해 60 일의 항해 끝에 신천지인  대륙 플리머스에 도착한다지금 아프가니스탄 난민들과 다를 것이 없다 당시  백인 난민들은 척박하고 처참한 환경에서 살아남은 자가   후에는 반으로 줄었다고 한다 낯선 땅에 정착할  있도록  대륙의 주인인 원주민들은 백인들에게 옥수수 재배법낚시메이플 시럽 만들기 등을 가르쳐준다



1675  당시 추장인 필립 왕과의 전쟁을 시작으로 수많은 전쟁  치르며 차츰  대륙을 빼앗기게 된다인디언들의 생계수단인 버펄로 멸종 작전은 버펄로  마리를 죽이면 인디언 10명을 죽이  것과 같다는 이론 아래에 50 만에 버펄로는 멸종위기를 맞는 . 14 프랭클린 피어스 대통령으로부터 200 에이커의 땅을 15 달러에 팔도록 강요당한다. 1830 7 대통령인 앤드루 잭슨 대통령은 인디언 추방법을 강행하여 인디언 보호구역으로 모든 인디언을 강제 이주시킨다체로키 인디언들 14000명이 강제 이주 길인 눈물의 여정을 떠나 오클라호마의 불모지에 도착 했을 때는 거의 떼죽음을 당해 1200명이 남는다



현재  대륙에는 310개의 인디언 보호구역이 정해 있으며 미국 영토의 2.3%만을 차지하고 있다전기상하수도 시설도 없는 광활한 황무지에 도착한 인디언들의 생계는 막막했다 정부는 인디언 보호구역에 기숙학교를 설립해 인디언 문화를 말살하고 백인문화에 동화시키고자 했다그들의 생계에 도움을 주고자 카지노를 세우고 운영권을 준다카지노를 접한 원주민들은 그들의 분노와 한을 도박과 마약까지 손을  미래가 없는 절망적인   악순환을 맞는다원주민 청소년의 자살률은 미국 같은 또래의 청소년에 비해 12배나 높다는 통계가 나왔다그들은 차라리 다른 곳에서 다시 태어나고 싶다고 호소한다.



2017년부터 I have a dream foundation 수장을 맡은 딸아이가   전에 Cherokee Nation 있는 오클라호마에 날아가  나라의 지도자들을 만나고 왔다. Education is Power라는 주제로 중대사를 논의하고 서로 파트너가 되어 청소년들이 꿈을 갖고  꿈을 실현하 도록 돕고 그들에게 동기부여를 심어주고 돌아왔다자신을 사랑 하고 자존심을 지켜주고 상대방을 배려하는 삶은 진정한 교육에서 배운다고등교육만이 우리의 빈약한 사고를 윤택하게 해준다고 믿고 나와  딸아이는 같은 비전을 갖고 있다



코로나 팬데믹과 이민정책난민사태아시안 혐오 등의 사태를 겪으면서 미국 시스템이 한계에 봉착한  아닌지 의심이 간다청교도들이 17세기에 유럽사회의 전통과 시스템이 한계에 부딪혔   인디언들이 도와주었듯이 인디언들이 정식 교육을 받고 정체성을 찾아 그들의 지혜로  난국을 헤쳐 나갈  있는 높고 맑은 영혼의 목소리를 듣고 싶다.

널리 보도되지는 않았었지만 9.11 직후 클린턴은 ( 당시미국이 겪고 있는 테러에 의한 고통은 미국과 기독교인들이 인류에게 저지른 원죄原罪에서 비롯한 것임을 상기시켰다.

 

자신의 모교인 조지타운 대학에서 행한 연설에서 테러는 수백  전부터  땅에 존재했고우리는 노예제도를 기초로 국가를 건설 했으며 수많은 노예들이 이유 없이 목숨을 잃었다우리는 땅이나 자원을 빼앗기 위해 원주민들을 죽였고 그들을 인간 이하의 존재로 취급했다우리는 아직도  죗값을  갚지 못했다.



 번째 십자군 원정  기독교인들은 유대인을 교회에 가둬 불태웠 으며 예루살렘 신전 언덕에 살고 있던 모든 이슬람 교인들을 살해했 중동에서는 아직까지도  일을 잊지 못하고 있다.



 연설문 영문 일부를 인용하면 이렇다.



"terror, the killing of noncombatants for economic, or religious reasons, has a very long history, as long as organized combat itself, and yet it has never succeeded as a military strategy standing on its own...Those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless.  Indeed, in the first Crusade, when the Christian soldiers took Jalusalem, they first burned a synagogue with 300 Jews in it, and proceeded to kill every woman and child who was Muslim on the Temple Mount...I can tell you that that story is still being told today in the Middle East and we are still paying for it."



인류 역사 유사 이래  그래왔겠지만특히 최근  세기 동안 자연과학자들뿐만 아니라 인문 사회 과학자들까지도 무질서해 보이는 혼돈의 카오스 속에서 질서 정연한 코스모스를 발견한다물리 화학 생물학 분야는 물론 금융경제 시장에서도 모든 것이 불가분不可分의 연관성聯關性을 갖고 계속 변화 발전 진화하고 있음을 알게  것이다.

 

철학자 종교인이 아니라 해도 우리 모두 누구나가  우주 천체 자연이건 인류나 민족 또는 개개인에 있어서건 단편적으로 분해 분석하면 무의미하고 상관없어 보여도  모든 자연현상이나 인간사人間事를 종합해    어떤 뜻과 보람을 찾을  있는 것이리라.

 

다시 말해 카오스의 불행과 비극조차도 우리는 긍정적으로 이해하  수용해 낙관할  있으리라는 것이다



   당시 현행 8개의 한국사 검인정교과서를 단일화하겠다는 정부방침으로 국회 내에서뿐만 아니라 외부에서까지 찬반 토론이 활발했고국정화에 반대하는 각계 성명이 잇달았었다도대체 역사란 무엇인가 우리 생각  같이 해보자.

 

선생님역사란 무엇입니까?”  젊은 제자로부터 이런 질문을 받고 “역사란 믿을  없는 것일세.”라고 언론인 출신 작가 이병주 (1921-1992) 답했다고 한다그는 장편소설 ‘산하 제사題辭로 ‘태양에 바래지면 역사가 되고 월광에 물들면 신화가 된다.’ 적었다역사歷史란 승자勝者의 기록이다아는 만큼 보인다고 하지만  보려면  배경背景과 이면의 사정事情을 살필  있는 심안心眼을 가져야 하리라.

 

크리스토퍼 콜럼버스Christopher Columbus (1451-1506)   예로 들어보자미국에선 1934 프랭클린 루즈벨트Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) 대통령에 의하여 10 12일이 콜럼버스 Columbus Day 미연방 공휴일로 정해졌다가 1971 10월의 둘째 월요일로 변경되었다신대륙 발견 500주년을 기해 National Geographic 잡지가 ‘콜럼버스가 우리를 발견한 것이 아니라우리  먼저 콜럼버스를 보았다라는 남아메리카 사람들의 시각視覺을 소개하면서 콜럼버스의 비판이 표면화되기 시작했다.

 

콜럼버스가 남미대륙에 상륙한 이후 150 동안 1 명에 달하던 원주민들의 숫자가 300 명으로 줄어들었다며그들은 콜럼버스  인류 역사상 최대의 학살을 촉발한 침략자로 보게 되었다베네수엘라Venezuela 우고 차베스Hugo Chavez (1954-2013) 대통령은 “10 12일을 원주민 저항의 날로 바꾸라!”라는 대통령 령을 내리기도 했다.

 

미국 미네소타 대학 인권센터에서는 콜럼버스를 ‘사상 최악의 인물 모의재판에 기소했는데배심원들은 12시간에 걸친 심리 끝에, 7개의 죄목인 노예범죄살인강제노동유괴폭행고문절도에 대해서 유죄라고 평결하였고재판장은 죄목 하나마다 50년씩 계산해서 통산 350년의 사회봉사활동을 콜럼버스에게 선고하였다 같은 현상은 아직도 세계 도처에서 인종과 민족국가  그리고 개개인 사이에서도 사회 전반에 걸쳐 갑을 관계로 계속 반복되고 있지 않나흔히 속된 말로 ‘억울하면 출세하라느니적자생존適者生存이니약육강식弱肉强食이니 하지 않는가.

 

그래서 원불교를 창시한 소태산 대종사는 “모든 사람에게 천만 가지 경전을  가르쳐 주고 천만 가지 선善을 장려하는 것이 급한 일이 아니라먼저 생멸生滅 없는 진리眞理와 인과응보因果應報

 진리를 믿고 깨닫게 하여 주는 것이 가장 급한 이라고 했으 리라.

 

 ‘생멸 없는 진리 ‘인과응보의 진리 내가 한마디로 줄여 풀이하자면 ‘우리는 하나라고  있지 않을까자연을 포함 해서 내가 너를 위하면  나를 위하는  되고내가 너를 다치게 하면 내가 다친다는 진실眞實말이다이것이 바로 코스미안 사상이며 현재 코로나바이러스로 명명백백明明白白해지고 있는 사실事實이 아닌가.

 

호기심에 가득  아이들은 말끝마다 “Why?”라고 묻는다. “네가 좋아야 나도 좋으니까,” 이것이 정답正答이   있지 않을 우리 어른들도 아이들처럼 “?”라고 묻고전쟁과 파괴의 카오스Chaos 초래하는 대신 사랑과 평화의 코스모스Cosmos 창조해가면서 밝고 아름다운 새로운 코스미안 역사를 써보리라.



우리 아메리카 대륙 원주민의 ‘평화를 위한 기도문祈禱文’ 같이 외워보리라.

 

하늘에 계신 위대하신 영靈이시여

우리를 평화와 이해理解의 길로 인도하소서

우리 모든 자연 만물 형제자매로 함께 살게 하소서

지구 어머니 품에 잠시 머무는 삶이오니

우리에게 주신 모든 축복에

 우리 눈을 뜨게 해주소서

위대한 영이시여

우리의 기도를 들어주소서

1855 미국의 14(1853-1857) 대통령 프랭클린 피어스 Franklin Pierce(1804-1869)에게  편지에서 아메리칸 원주민 인디언 추장 시아틀은 이렇게 말한다. ( 일부 요점만 아래와 같이 옮겨 본다영문 전문과 함께)



모든 생물은  같은 숨을 쉰다.

짐승나무그리고 사람 자신도.

그런데 백인들은 자신들이 들이쉬는

자연의 공기를 알지 못하는  같다.

여러 날을 두고 자리에

누워 앓다 죽는 사람처럼

그들은 자신들의 고약한 냄새를

전혀 맡지 못하는  같다.

백인들 또한 멸종하리라.

어쩜 다른 인종들보다 먼저.

계속해서  잠자리를

오염시키고 더럽혀 보라.

그러면 어느   너는

네가  오물에  막혀

죽을 수밖에 없으리라.

대륙의 모든 들소 버팔로가

모두 너희들 손에 도살되고

들말 야생마가 너희들 손에

하나같이  길들여지는 

숲과 들판  대륙 곳곳이

너희들이 지나간 냄새와

흔적으로 가득  버리고

아름다운 자연의 경치가

 빛을 잃는  무성하고 

울창하던 산림 자취도 없이 

사라졌어라.

독수리는 어디로 갔을까?

그림자도 없이 사라졌어라.

이것이 삶다운 삶의 종말을 고하고

 죽은 목숨 조금  살아남기 위한

단말마적 몸부림의 시작일 뿐이리라.



Some of our most influential roots are the original cultures of this land. The following letter, sent by Chief Seattle of the Dwamish Tribe in Washington to President Pierce in 1855, illustrates the dignity, wisdom, and continuing relevance of this native continental vision.

 

THE GREAT CHIEF in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. The Great Chief also sends us words of friendship and good will. This is kind of him, since we know he has little need of our friendship in return. But we will consider your offer, for we know if we do not so the white man may come with guns and take our land. What Chief Seattle says you can count on as truly as our white brothers can count on the return of the seasons. My words are like the stars– they do not set.



How can you buy or sell the sky – the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us. Yet we do not own the freshness of the air or the sparkle of the water. How can you buy them from us? We will decide in our time. Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing, and every humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people.

We know that the white man does not understand our ways. One portion of land is the same to him as the next, for he is a stranger who comes in the night and takes from the land whatever he needs. The earth is not his brother, but his enemy, and when he has conquered it, he moves on. He leaves his father’s graves and his children’s birthright is forgotten. The sight of your cities pains the eyes of the redman. But perhaps it is because the redman is a savage and does not understand.



There is no quiet place in the white man’s cities. No place to listen to the leaves of spring or the rustle of insect wings. But perhaps because I am a savage and do not understand – the clatter only seems to insult the ears. And what is there to life if a man cannot hear the lovely cry of the whippoorwill or the arguments of the frogs around a pond at night? The Indian prefers the soft sound of the wind itself cleansed by a mid-day rain, or scented by a pinõn pine: The air is precious to the redman. For all things share the same breath-the beasts, the trees, and the man. The white man does not seem to notice the air he breathes. Like a man dying for many days, he is numb to the stench.

If I decide to accept, I will make one condition. The white man must treat the beasts of this land as his brothers. I am a savage and I do not understand any other way. I have seen thousands of rotting buffaloes on the prairie left by the white man who shot them from a passing train. I am a savage and do not understand how the smoking iron horse can be more important than the buffalo that we kill only to stay alive. What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, men would die from great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beast also happens to the man.



All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth.



Our children have seen their fathers humbled in defeat. Our warriors have felt shame. And after defeat they turn their days in idleness and contaminate their bodies with sweet food and strong drink. It matters little where we pass the rest of our days-they are not many. A few more hours, a few more winters, and none of the children of the great tribes that once lived on this earth, or that roamed in small bands in the woods will remain to mourn the graves of the people once as powerful and hopeful as yours.

One thing we know that the white man may one day discover. Our God is the same God. You may think that you own him as you wish to own our land, but you cannot. He is the Body of man, and his compassion is equal for the redman and the white. This earth is precious to him, and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its Creator. The whites, too, shall pass – perhaps sooner than other tribes. Continue to contaminate your bed, and you will one night suffocate in your own waste. When the buffalo are all slaughtered, the wild horses all tamed, the secret corners of the forest heavy with the scent of many men, and the view of the ripe hills blotted by the talking wires, where is the thicket? Gone. Where is the eagle? Gone. And what is it to say goodbye to the swift and the hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival.

We might understand if we knew what it was the white man dreams, what hopes he describes to his children on long winter nights, what visions he burns into their minds, so they will wish for tomorrow. But we are savages. The white man’s dreams are hidden from us. And because they are hidden, we will go our own way. If we agree, it will be to secure your reservation you have promised.

There perhaps we may live out our brief days as we wish. When the last redman has vanished from the earth, and the memory is only the shadow of a cloud passing over the prairie, these shores and forests will still hold the spirits of my people, for they love this earth as the newborn loves its mother’s heartbeat. If we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it as we have cared for it. Hold in your memory the way the land is as you take it. And with all your strength, with all your might, and with all your heart-preserve it for your children, and love it as God loves us all. One thing we know – our God is the same. This earth is precious to him. Even the white man cannot escape the common destiny.



이를  한마디로 줄이자면 우주만물이  하나이고 우리 모두 같은 숨을 쉰다는 만고의 진리  코스미안사상을 밝힌 것이리라.

2012 연말 발생한 미국 커네티컷주의 총기 난사 사건에 관해 미주판 H일보 오피니언 페이지(2012 12 26일자)  칼럼 에서 전종준 변호사는  이슬람을 ‘ 손에 코란 손에 이라고 지칭기독교 국가인 미국을 ‘ 손에 성경 손에 이라고 비유 하고 싶다 했는데만시지탄을 금할  없으나 시의적절한 지적이 라고 나도 공감했다반복되는 이런 비극과 참사가 미국의 원죄에서 기인된  아닌가.

 

마치 희랍신화에 나오는 시지프스(코린트의 왕으로 무거운 바위를 산꼭대기로 계속해서 밀어 올리는 벌을 받음같이 달걀로 바위   일들이 세상에는 얼마든지 있다 한두 가지 예를 들어보자.

 

1950 노벨 문학상까지 받은 영국의 석학이며 세계평화주의자 버트런드 러셀이 1966 설립한 ‘러셀법정The Russell Tribunal, also known as the International War Crimes Tribunal이란 것이 있다. 1980 11 로테르담에서 열린  러셀법정에선 피해자인  대륙 원주민 아메리칸 인디언들의 증언을 듣고 다음과 같은 판결을 내렸다.

 

인류역사상 가장 심한 박해를 아메리카 대륙의 원주민인 인디언 들은 받아왔다대량 학살을 비롯해 저들이 살던 땅을 빼앗기고 저들의 인종적경제적사회적정신적인 인권을 모두 말살 당해 왔다.”

 

러셀법정은 정식 법정이 아니기 때문에 강제 집행력은 없지만 인간  양심과 양식에 호소한다미국캐나다브라질파나마  남북 아메리카 대륙의 여러 나라들이  원주민들의 최소한의 생존권과 저들 고유의 신앙을 존중하여 저들을 기독교인으로 강제로 개종시 키지  것을 강력히 촉구했다.

 

1855 미국의 14 대통령인 프랭클린 피어스Franklin Pierce (1804-1869)에게 보낸 편지에서 인디언 추장 씨애틀Chief Seattle (1786-1866) 이렇게 말한다.

 

모든 생물은 같은 숨을 쉰다짐승나무와 그리고 사람들 자신  말이다그런데도 백인들은 자기들이 들이쉬는 공기를 알지  하는  같다여러 날을 두고 자리에 누워 앓다 죽는 사람 같이 자신 들의 고약한 냄새를 맡지 못하고 있다백인들 또한 시간이 지나면 멸종하리라어쩌면 다른 인종들보다 앞서  세상에서 사라질 것이 .”

 

 대륙의 원주민인 아메리칸 인디언들은 우리 한민족과 같은 몽고족이라고 하지 않나



이와 비슷하게도 수천  동안 터전으로 살아온 땅을 유태인들에게 빼앗긴 중동의 팔레스타인 사람들의 억울한 사정에 대해서도 이스 라엘은 물론 2차대전 이후 이스라엘을 지지해온 서방 각국들을 규탄할 러셀법정이 하루 속히 열렸으면 좋으련만...

 

실효성은 없지만 러셀법정이 인류에게 주는 메시지는 피부색깔이 다르고 믿는 종교가 다르다 해도 지구상에 살고 있는 우리 모두 같은 ‘인간가족이라는 것이다



소위 청교도라 불리는 유럽의 앵글로색슨족인 백인 기독교 신자들   대륙으로 건너와 하나님이 자기들에게 주신 땅이라고 아메리  원주민 인디언들의 땅을 뺏어 차지하듯이 유태인들은 중동 팔레 스타인에서 살아온 아랍인들을 내쫓고 그곳에 이스라엘이라는 나라를 세운 것이다



그런데도 자칭 기독교인들이 도덕적인 우월감에 사로잡혀 있는 것을   "기도교인들만 아니면 우리 모두가 기독교인이  텐데?..But for the Christians, we could all be Christians.../If it weren't for Christians, I'd be a Christian..."라고  간디의 말이 생각난다.

 

더욱 목불인견目不忍見인 것은 2차대전  독일 나치에게서 극심  박해를 받았다고 계속해서 목소리를 높이고 있는 그들이 지금은 중동에서 팔레스타인의 아랍인들을 박해하고 있다는 사실 이다하나님의 선택을 받은 백성이란 선민사상에서 오는 자부심이 처음 에는 유태인들에게 도움이 되었을는지 몰라도 종국에 가서는 다른 민족으로부터 미움을 사서 따돌림을 받게 하는  아닐까.

 

이런 유태인들이 우리 한국인들에게 좋은 반면교사가   있으리 타민족 가운데는 한국인을 동양의 유태인이라 한다지 않나우리 자신을 잠시 돌아보자 청년 노동자의 삶과 죽음이 떠오른 서울평화시장에서 일하던 노동자 전태일은 1948 8 26 대구에서 태어나 1970 11 13 평화시장  길거리에서 스물 둘의 나이로 몸을 불살라 죽었다사람들은 그의 죽음을 ‘인간선언’ 이라 부른다. "인간을 물질화하는 세대 인간이 인간으로서의 모든 것을 박탈당하고 있는  무시무시한 시대나는 절대로 어떠  불의와도 타협하지 않을 것이며동시에 어떤 불의도 묵과하지 않고 시정하려고 노력할 "이라며 그는 싸웠고 그는 죽어 갔다.

 

그야말로 2   예수 못지않게아니  이상으로 그는 죽기 얼마  일기에 이렇게 적었다. "나를 버리고나를 죽이고 가마조금만 참고 견디어라너희들의 곁을 떠나지 않기 위하여 나약한 나를  바치마너희들은  마음의 고향이다무고한 생명체들이 시들고 있는 이때에  방울의 이슬이 되기 위하여 발버둥 치오니하느님긍휼과 자비를 베풀어 주시옵소서."

 

그는 사람이 태어나 어떻게 사는것이 참되게 사는 것인지 가르쳐 주었고죽음으로써 참사랑이 무엇인지 일깨워주었다초등학교도 졸업하지 못한 어린 나이에 여섯 식구의 생계를 책임져야 했고구두닦이를 비롯해 신문팔이껌팔이우산장사 등등 평화시장 재단사가 되기까지 숱한 밑바닥 일들을 경험하게 된다스물  해의 짧은 생을 사는 동안하루도 쉬어보지 못하는 날들이었다그렇게 성실히 일했건만 일당은 14시간 노동에  당시 커피   값밖에  되는 50원이었다평회시장의 다락방에서 피를 토하고 쓰러지는 어린 여공들을 지켜보며잘못된 사회현실에 대해 강한 의문을 가지게 되었고인간은 인간으로서 인간답게   있어야 한다는 믿음에 도달한다전태일그는  몸으로 사랑을 실천한 사람이다.

 

영원의 축소판이 순간이고 우주만물의 결정체가 모래    방울  포기  송이구름   하나 하나이듯 그의 이름 그대로 우리 모두 전부  크게 보아 같은 하나임을 그의 삶을 불사른 죽음의 불꽃으로 밝혀 보여준 우리 모두의 ‘’ 전태일 全泰壹의 명복을 빌면서 그의 부활과 재림 환생還生을 굳게 믿어 의심치 않는다 지구상에서 노동운동이 필요 없어 사라지는 날까지...
