코로나 팬데믹이라는 인류역사상 세계 최대의 쓰나미(Tsunami)를 맞은 2020년이 저물고 2021년이 밝아오고 있는 이 시점(時點)에 지난 75년 아니 2천여 년의 세월을 돌아보면서 올해 초에 출간된 우생(愚生)의 졸저(拙著) ‘유쾌한 행복론’에 실린 졸문(拙文) ‘코스미안 비전은 온 인류의 시대정신(時代精神 –zeitgeist)’과 올가을에 나온 영문판 ‘코스미안 랩소디Cosmian Rhapsody)’에 수록된 ‘코스미안 비전이 열쇠(Cosmian Vision Is the Key)’ 그리고 ‘코스미안 구도(求道)의 길(The Cosmian Way Is the Way to Seek)’을 아래에 옮겨보리라.
코스미안 비전은 온 인류의 시대정신(時代精神 zeitgeist)
8·15 광복과 함께 질풍과 노도처럼 한반도에 밀어닥친 미-소 냉전의 광풍(狂風) 속에 휩싸인 가운데 서양풍(西洋風) 사대주의 사조(事大主義思潮)에 맞서 역풍(逆風)을 일으킨 인물 두 사람을 들라면 북한의 김일성과 남한의 문선명이라고 할 수 있지 않을까.
전자(前者)는 공산주의가 아닌 골찬주의 ‘주체사상(主體思想)’을 주창했고, 후자(後者)는 분쟁과 파쟁을 일삼는 세상의 모든 종교를 통일하는 ‘통일교(統一敎)’를 창시했으니까. 그 내용이나 결과는 차치물론(且置勿論) 내버려 두고 문제 삼지 않기로 하고, 그 이름만으로도 큰 박수를 받을 만하지 않은가. 역사적인 평가는 후세 사가(史家)들에게 맡긴다고 하더라도 이들이 제시한 비전만큼은 우리가 기꺼이 기탄(忌憚)없이 적극 수용(受容/受用/收容 /收用) 할 수 있지 않으랴. 우리 단군의 홍익인간(弘益人間) /홍익만물(弘益萬物) 그리고 천도교(天道敎)의 인내천(人乃天) 사상으로서 말이다.
영국 시인 존 밀턴(John Milton 1608-1674)은 그의 대서사시 ‘실낙원(Paradise Lost, 1667)에서 ‘악마의 광란, 침울한 우울증, 그리고 달빛을 쏘여 실성(失性)한 광증(狂症)’에 대해 언급하고 있다.
30여 년 전 영국의 TV에서 영국의 젊은이들이 통일교에 포섭 세뇌되어 이용 착취당하고 있다는 프로가 방영된 후 영국의 신문마다 ‘Moonie’라는 통일교가 반사회적(反社會的)이니, 가정을 파괴한다느니 야단이었다. 이 와중(渦中)에 통일교 신자가 된 손자를 둔 한 영국 할아버지가 보낸 다음과 같은 편지가 영국의 진보주의적 전국지 신문 가디언 (The Guardian)에 실렸었다.
“내 손자는 현재 21세로 3년 전 통일교 신자가 되었습니다. 그때부터 그들의 규칙대로 술, 담배, 마약, 문란한 섹스 성생활을 기피해왔습니다. 이와 같은 규율이 반사회적이란 말입니까. 그 아이 부모 말로는 이웃들도 자식들이 술집이다 디스코다 싸돌아 다니면서 마약 밀매꾼들의 밥이 되는 대신 차라리 통일교도들이 되었으면 하고 바란답니다. 내 손자는 6주마다 집에 오면 행복하고 화평한 얼굴로 집안 궂은일 다 맡아 하고, 옛날에는 긴 머리 장발에다 막살던 아이인데 지금은 복장과 외모부터가 아주 참하고 생기있는 딴사람이 되었답니다. 대화를 해 봐도 그가 세뇌됐다는 아무런 낌새를 찾아볼 수 없고, 그가 믿게 된 통일교의 교리가 기독교의 기존 정통파 교리와 좀 다르지만, 근본적으로는 같은 것 같습니다. 그러니 통일교가 가정을 파괴한다고 할 수 없지 않겠습니까? 그러고 보면 지금으로부터 60여 년 전 당시 18세에 어려서부터 주일학교와 교회를 다닌 끝에 세례받고 침례교 신자가 되었을 때 나야말로 세뇌되었던 것인지도 모르겠습니다. 그뿐만 아니라 남녀노소 할 것 없이 대중 매스컴을 통해 인체에 해롭고 반사회적인 술과 담배 선전광고로 우리 모두 잘못 세뇌되어 오고 있지 않습니까?"
공교롭게도 또 그 몇 년 전 영국의 국영방송 BBC ‘리스(The Reith Lectures)’ 공개강좌 연사로 초빙된 미국의 그 당시 미시간 대학 알리 마즈루이(Ali Mazrui 1933-2014) 교수는 최근에 서방국가에서 전도(傳道)하며 개종(改宗)시키는 아프리카와 아시아 출신 선교사들은 그동안 오래도록 서양사람들이 처방해 온 약(藥)을 그들 자신들에게도 맛보게 해주고 있을 뿐이라고 지적했다. 한국의 문선명 목사가 이끄는 통일교 운동에 모여드는 서양의 자식들 부모가 느끼는 억하심정(抑何心情)을 자기는 충분히 이해할 수 있다고 마즈루이 교수는 말한다.
“내게는 아들 셋이 있습니다. 아프리카 사람으로 나는 태어났고, 내가 아직도 아프리카에 살고 있었다면 내 아들들도 선교사들의 전도 대상이 됐을 것입니다. 물론 선교사들은 서양의 백인들인 감리교나 가톨릭 계통이었을 것입니다.”
서양 백인들의 제국주의적 식민지 질서에 쉽게 또 빨리 현지 원주민들을 굴종 예속시키기 위해 백인 선교사들은 사랑과 친절, 용서와 인내 등 여성적 미덕(美德)을 주입 세뇌시켜 이들의 반항심과 투쟁 정신을 약화시켜 정신무장을 해제시킨 후 백인들의 세계 지배를 가능케 했다고 정치학 교수인 그는 본다. 아프리카와 아시아 그리고 아메리카 대륙 및 호주와 뉴질랜드 원주민들의 고유한 정신문화는 백인들의 독선독단적인 종교적 과학적 물질문명의 세속적 침공을 받아왔음을 상기시키면서 문선명 통일교 교주가 이러한 침공에 대응, 처음으로 역침투, 역선교의 역공(逆攻)을 개시한 것 같다고 마즈루이 교수는 관찰한다.
만약 세계 2차대전에서 일본이 승리했다면 아마도 일본의 신도(神道 Shinto) 신사참배(神社參拜)에 앞장섰을 한국 사람들이 오늘날 한국과 미국 등지에서 교회에 많이 다니고 있을 것이다. 한마디로 말해서 서양의 해적들이 총칼은 물론 원자폭탄으로 세계를 정복하지 못했었다면 저들의 종교 기독교가 오늘날처럼 세계 도처에서 판치게 되지 못하였으리라. 이렇게 볼 때 서양 백인 선교사들에 의해 개종된 모든 유색 기독교인들을 좀 극단직으로 표현해서 정신적으로 거세(去勢)당한 일종의 정신적인 내시(內侍)’라고 말할 수도 있지 않을까.
이미 고인(故人)이 되셨지만, 그분이 아직 살아 계실 때 27년 전 나는 아래와 같은 편지 한 통을 문선명 교주님께 띄웠다.
문선명 선생님께
문 선생님과 일면식은 물론 통일교에 대해 아는바 아무것도 없는 무지한 소생이 극히 외람되나마 삼가 이 글을 올립니다. 뭣 보다 통일교의 통일이란 이름부터가 분열될 대로 분열된 온 인류에게 가장 호소력 있고 매력적입니다. 지난해 전 세계 1백 40개국 8만 명의 지성들이 자리를 같이한 제1회 세계 문화 체육대전이 한국에서 개막됐다는 뉴스 [아니 이야말로 복음(福音)이라 해야겠지요] 를 접했을 때 정말 가슴 벅찬 감격에 환호성(歡呼聲)의 경탄성(敬歎聲)이 절로 나왔습니다.
세계 규모에 걸치는 획기적인 대전(大展)에서는 국제과학통일 회의, 세계평화교수협의회 세계대회, 세계평화종교연합, 세계평화연합, 세계평화여성연합, 대학원리연구회 세계대회, 체육대전, 등의 행사와 실로 장관(壯觀)일 수밖에 없는 3만여 쌍 6만여 명의 국제합동결혼식이 베풀어졌다는 보도에 이 대전(大展)의 창시자인 문 선생님께 큰 박수와 진심으로 깊은 경의(敬意)를 표해 마지않으면서 이 모든 행사가 전대미문(前代未聞)의 이름뿐인 아닌 문자 그대로 명실상부(名實相符)한 결실(結實)맺기를 축원하는 바입니다.
지난해 미국 시사주간지 타임(TIME)의 ‘나라 없는 사람’이란 표제로 구(舊)소련연방 대통령 미하일 고르바초프(Mikhail Gorbachev, 1931 - )의 실각을 다룬 커버스토리 기사를 읽고 어떤 한 독자가 보낸 다음과 같은 글이 타임지에 또한 실렸습니다. (타임지 1992년 1월 13일자) ‘고르바초프에게 편지를 띄울 수 있다면 나는 이렇게 쓰겠다’는 요지였지요.
“당신은 결코 나라 없는 사람이 아닙니다. 세계가 당신의 나라이고 우리 모두 충심으로 당신을 환영합니다. 당신은 그 짧은 시간에 그토록 큰 일을 했고 앞으로도 더욱 많은 일할 사람입니다. 온 인류를 청중으로 세계란 강당에서 당신의 비전과 지혜를 나눠줄 수 있습니다. 당신은 참으로 위대하고 최고의 찬사를 받을 만합니다.”
어쩌면 이 말을 문 선생님께도 그대로 해드릴 수 있겠습니다. 반세기에 걸쳐 꽁꽁 얼어붙었던 동서냉전의 빙산을 고르비가 녹여 버렸다면 2천여 년에 걸쳐 동서양 간에 쌓이고 내려 깔려온 어둠의 장막을 문 선생님께서 걷어 올려주시고 우리 모두의 가슴 속의 빙산을 하루빨리 녹여주시길 바랍니다. 그래서 우리 모두 물질과 탐욕에 어둔 눈을 뜨고 참빛을 보아 우주 나그네 코스미안으로 환골탈태(換骨奪胎) 새롭게 태어날 수 있도록 말입니다.
대단히 무엄(無嚴)한 표현이 되겠으나 남성 상위를 영어로는 ‘선교사 체위(Missionary Position)’라 하지요. 우리말 ‘감투거리’와는 정 반대되는 뜻으로요. 그리고 영어에는 스스로를 낮추어 아랫사람에게 짐짓 겸손하게 은혜나 베푸는 듯이 겸허한 덕색(德色)질을 하고 생색(生色)낸다는 뜻으로, 함께(con)와 내려간다(descend)란 두 단어를 합성한 condescend란 복합어가 있지요. 본래 선교사란 종교를 널리 전도 전파하는 사람을 일컫는 것이었겠지만 주로 기독교의 외국 전도에 나선 사람을 지칭해 그렇게 불러온 것 같습니다. 이와 같은 선교사들은 어디까지나 condescend하는 입장에서 무지몽매(無知蒙昧)하고 미개(未開)한 야만인(野蠻人)들을 계몽(啓蒙)하고 교화(敎化)시킨다는 소명감(召命感)과 사명감(使命感)에 불타는 광신적(狂信的), 정신적(精神的) 십자군(十字軍)이 아니었습니까.
예수가 사람의 탈을 쓰고 지상에 나타난 하느님으로 고자세(高姿勢)를 취했었다면 문 선생님께서는 저자세(低姿勢)를 취해 주십시오. 사람에서 출발해서 우리 모든 사람 아니 우주 자연 만물이 하나의 ‘하나님’ 됨을 밝혀 보여 주십시오. 진정한 세계 평화를 가져올 수 있는 통일운동은 재래식(在來式) 기독교의 condescend하는 선교 사업으로는 절대로 안 될 일이고, 그 정 반대로 함께 오르는 conascend 하는 것이라야 할 것 같다는 우견(愚見) 아닌 현견(賢見)을 감(敢)히 말씀드려 보는 것입니다.
나와 너, 남과 여, 백과 흑, 선과 악, 하늘과 땅, 선민과 이방인, 따로따로 상(上)과 하(下)로 분리되는 약육강식(弱肉强食)의, 마치 고양이가 쥐 사랑하듯 하는 인류애나 이웃사랑이 아닌 참사랑으로 인종과 국적, 사상과 종교, 남녀성벌, 직업의 귀천, 사회계층 불평등과 빈부격차(貧富隔差)의 양극화(兩極化)를 죄다 타파(打破)하고 초월(超越)해 온 인류를 그야말로 한 인간가족으로 통일하는 통일운동에 박차를 가해주십사 하는 것입니다.
그래서 우리 모두 다 함께 향불처럼 승화되어 하느님으로 피어오르도록 말입니다. 그러면 비틀즈의 일원이었던 존 레넌(John Lennon 1940-1980)이 그의 ‘상상해보게(Imagine)’란 노래로 꾼 꿈이 하나의 예언 같이 이루어질 것입니다. 소아(小我)를 벗어난 대아(大我), 곧 천인합입(天人合一)의 무궁(無窮我) 코스미안으로 무궁화(無窮花) 아니 코스모스 동산에서 만세동락(萬歲同樂) 할 날이 어서 오기를 고대합니다.

Cosmian Vision Is the Key
Are Koreans geniuses in concocting trendy catchphrases? They are like “TWIWOL” (“트인낭” in Korean), initials for “Twitting Is Waste Of Life,” and “KAFAIN depression” (“카페인 우울증” in Korean), for Kakao (the operator of Korea’s dominant mobile messaging app Kakao Talk), Facebook and Instagram depression. Many SNS users are reportedly becoming addicts and ending up depressed.
This must be a reflection of the reality we are experiencing these days. The number of Twitter followers of Trump, the embodiment (to some, if not most, people) of abnormality, absurdity, untruth is said to be in the 57,300,000s and his supporters are to be 40% to 50% of U.S. voters.
One may recite this cry along with ‘THE MADMAN: His Parables and Poems’ (1918) by Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931):
'THE PERFECT WORLD'
"God of lost souls, thou who art lost amongst the gods,
hear me:
Gentle Destiny that watchest over us, mad, wandering spirits,
hear me:
I dwell in the midst of a perfect race,
I the most imperfect.
I, a human chaos, a nebula of confused elements,
I move amongst finished worlds ㅡ
peoples of complete laws and pure order,
whose thoughts are assorted,
whose dreams are arranged,
and whose visions are enrolled and registered.
Their virtues, O God, are measured,
their sins are weighed,
and even the countless things that
pass in the dim twilight of neither sin nor virtue
are recorded and catalogued.
Here days and nights are divided into
seasons of conduct and governed by
rules of blameless accuracy.
To eat, to drink, to sleep, to cover one’s nudity,

It is a perfect world,
a world of consummate excellence,
a world of supreme wonders,
the ripest fruit in God’s garden,
the master-thought of the universe.
But why should I be here, O God,
I a green seed of unfulfilled passion,

Why am I here, O God of lost souls,
thou who art lost amongst the gods?"
Nevertheless, crying and wailing over the reality we are facing will be so futile.
Since there’s no answer to our questions, we’ve got to answer them ourselves.
Even though ours is not “the perfect world,” we are born with perfect key to turn our chaotic world into Cosmos. The key is none other than one’s Cosmian Vision of Love born Arainbow.
The Cosmian Way
“I’m bored.” It’s a puny little phrase, yet it has the power to fill parents with a cascade of dread, annoyance, and guilt.
Thus begins The New York Times Sunday Review (February 3, 2019) Opinion Column article “Let Children Get Bored Again” by Pamela Paul, the editor of The Book Review and a co-author of the forthcoming book ‘How to Raise a Reader’ by Maria Russo and Pamela Paul (published in September 2019). “Boredom spawns creativity and self-sufficiency,” she argues.
‘The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron (1948 - ) has sold more than four million copies, as the author puts it, “that has been a lodestar for blocked writers and other artistic hopefuls for more than a quarter of a century.”
The first printing was about 9,000 copies, said Joel Fotinos, formerly the publisher at Tacher/Penguin, which published the book. According to Mr. Fotinos, there was concern that it wouldn’t sell. “Part of the reason,” Mr. Fotinos said, “was that this was a book that wasn’t like anything else. We didn’t know where to put it on the shelves-did it go in religion or self-help? Eventually, there was a category called “creativity,” and “The Artist’s Way” launched it.”
Now an editorial director at St. Martin’s Press, Mr. Fotinos said he is deluged with pitches from authors claiming they’ve written “the new Artist’s Way.” “But for Julia, creativity was a tool for survival,” he said. “It was literally her medicine and that’s why the book is authentic, and resonates with many people.”
Needless to say, this must be the case for everybody, young and old, not just for writers and so-called “artists.” Each and every one of us was born with “creativity” in order to swim, not to sink.
Just as Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) comments in this book of aphorisms, poems, and parables, 'Sand and Foam' (1926):
"I am forever walking upon these shores,
Betwixt the sand and the foam.
The high tide will erase my foot-prints,
And the wind will blow away the foam.
But the sea and the shore will remain
Forever.
Once I filled my hand with mist.
Then I opened it and lo, the mist was a worm.
And I closed and opened my hand again,
and behold there was a bird.
And again I closed and opened my hand,
and in its hollow stood a man with a sad face,
turned upward,
And again I closed my hand,
and when I opened it there was naught but mist.
But I heard a song of exceeding sweetness.
You may have heard of the Blessed Mountain.
It is the highest mountain in our world.
Should you reach the summit
you would have only one desire,
and that to descend and
be with those who dwell in the deepest valley.
That is why it is called the Blessed Mountain.
Every thought I have imprisoned in expression
I must free by my deeds."
This is rather The Cosmian Way, methinks.
Cosmian Way Is the Way to Seek
“Nobody knows everything about anything.”
This is one of the principles of General Semantics launched in 1933 by Polish American originator Alfred Korzybski (1879-1950) with the publication of ‘Science and Sanity: An Introduction to Non-Aristotelian Systems and General Semantics’.
In other words: “We cannot imagine, think, say, understand, know all about anything or anyone ㅡ including ourselves.”
“길 없는 길” (The Way Without a Way) is a four-volume narrative written by South Korean writer Choi In-ho (1945-2013) about the life journey of the famous Korean Buddhist Seeker 경허(Gyunghuh 1849-1912).
The core message of this book ‘Cosmian Rhapsody’ (2020) may be put this way: Cosmian Way is the way for us all to seek.
