요즘 미국에선 어린애들처럼 말장난이 유행이다. 문장이나 단어, 단체명에서 모음(母音)을 생략하고 자음(子音)만 나열하는 방식이다. 언어의 진화라기보다는 퇴화라고 해야 할 것 같다.
한두 가지 예를 들자면 원래는 ‘The Management’란 이름으로 출발한 록 밴드가 이제는 그냥 'MGMT' 로 불리고, 텀블러(Tumblr)나 플리커(Flickkr)와 같은 회사 이름에서 모음 ‘에(e)’를 빼버리는 것이다.
왜 이런 현상이 일어나고 있을까. 이와 같은 모음의 실종이 오늘날 결혼과 출산을 기피하는 젊은 세대의 풍조를 반영하고 있는지도 모른다. 모음이 실종되면 점차 자음까지 사라지게 될 것이고, 그러면 언어 자체가 없어질 수도 있다.
이러한 모음의 실종이 모성(母性)의 실종을 의미한다면 이는 동심(童心)의 실종으로 이어질 수 있다. 그러면 어린이들의 지상천국은 사라지고 어른들의 지상지옥만 남게 될 것이다.
그래도 비관하지 않고 간절히 바라는 바는, 그동안 행동 없이 말로만 뇌까려 온 사랑, 인권, 자유, 평등, 평화와 같은 언어는 몽땅 집어치우고, 묵묵히 실천하는 삶을 사는 것이다. 이것이 우주와 자연의 계시라고 생각된다.
프랑스 시인 장 니콜라 아르튀르 랭보(1854-1891)는 그의 시 '모음'에서 다섯 개의 모음인 '아 에 이 오 우'에 다섯 가지 색깔을 부여했다. ‘아’는 검은 색, ‘에’는 하얀 색, ‘이’는 빨간 색, ‘오’는 파란 색, '우'는 초록 색을 배정하면서 언젠가는 그 이유를 밝힐 것이라고 했다.
하지만 그는 그 후에 쓴 다른 시 '지옥의 한 계절’에서 “(모음들) 색깔을 내가 정했지만 그 이유는 밝히지 않았다.”면서 거기에 대한 설명을 거부했다. 그 이유를 우리는 그가 남긴 말 한 마디에서 찾아 볼 수 있다.
“천재성은 마음 내키는 대로 동심을 되찾는 것이다.”
돌이켜보면 우리 모두는 말을 배우고 언어를 익히기 전에 천심(天心)인 동심을 타고나지 않았던가?

What Do the Missing Vowels Mean?
There is a fashion in American language culture these days to be playful like children, leaving out the vowels in names, sentences and words.
For example, the rock band that was originally named as ‘The Management’ is now simply called MGMT and tech companies like Tumblr and Flickr, are dropping 'e's. People are signing their (ever-briefer) correspondence “Yrs”. They say that the first step in the stage of language’s evolution, or rather devolution, has already happnd.
How come? This may be reflecting the reality that nowadays young people are avoiding marriage and having children.
From this trend we can infer that missing vowels will be followed by missing consonants, and it will eventually lead to dispensing with language altogether.
Furthermore, if missing vowels mean missing mother nature, it will be followed by missing childhood, and consequently, the heaven on earth of childhood will disappear, while only living hell of adults will remain.
Not to be so pessimistic, I pray, good riddance to all the talk of love, equality, freedom, human rights and peace without walking the walk. This must be the divine revelation that we should start living these ideals instead of just talking the talk in lip service.
In his sonnet “Vowels”, the French poet Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) names the five vowels, linking each to a color: “A black, E white, I red, U green, O blue: Vowels.” Although he continues in the second line of the poem, “I will someday tell of your latent birth,” subsequently, in his work, Une Saison Enfer (A Season in Hell), he would write, “I invented the color of vowels! I withheld the translation of it.”
Perhaps we can find the missing explanation in this short Rimbaud quote: “Genius is the recovery of childhood at will.”
In retrospect, weren’t we all born with the celestial divinity to enjoy our childhood before we learn to speak in any language?!
