■ 전시소개
Beyond Hearing (Lena Lee)
꽤 많은 장소를 혼자 돌아다녔다.
낯선 장소에서 마주친 낯선 장면들.
그렇지만 그곳에 사는 이에게는 익숙하기 짝이 없을 공간들.
일상적인 장소와 낯선 이의 시선이 마주치는 시간들을 담아보고 싶었다.
낯선 시간에 혼자 서서 고독을 받아들이는 순간들을 표현하고 싶었다.
외로움은 없어야 한다고 말하지만,
외로움을 누군가에게 기대어 누그러뜨려야 한다고 말하지만,
외로운 순간은 어디에나, 언제나 존재하며,
슬퍼할 일도, 힘들어할 일도 아니다.
우리는 언어로 모든 걸 설명할 수 있다고 믿지만,
사실은 우리의 입과 귀를 넘어서는 순간들이 더 많이 존재한다.
마치 흰색을 깨닫기 위해 검은색이 필요하듯이,
타인을 이해하기 위해서는 홀로 낯선 곳에 자신을 방치하는 시간이 필요하다 믿는다.
개인은 ‘혼자있음’을 통해 타인을 더 이해할 수 있게 된다.
언어가 달리는 공간을 넘어서서
한 장면을 보며 각자 자기만의 감정을 가지고 서 있을 수 있다면.
혼자만의 시간들을,
언어를 넘어 전할 수 있다면 기쁘겠다.
<Beyond Hearing statement>
Beyond Hearing is a photographic series to display private emotion and thoughts in journeys.
I've wandered alone around ordinary areas where I've traveled, thus far, I try to capture the moment that look unfamiliar through my lenses in order to perceive the space-time into pure-emotion in my own. It can be 'defamiliarization' with photography. Those places are ordinary and mundane places to natives. The aim of this work is to let it unfamiliar to even people to live there, including people who have never been there.
That I believe is photography is valuable apparatus to capture instant moments which human commonly cannot recognise. Time is passed and continuous by Bergson, from the reason, everyone perceive the same scenes so they believe their space-time is familiar and mundane. However, the space-time is consisted by uncountable moments like frames in movies, photography can expose something strange as showing segmentalized space-time. Beyond Hearing is an attempt to display frozen space-time in intimate emotion by defamiliarization.
Beyond Hearing is also an attempt to display unnamed moment in photogrpahy.
Human-being is a linguistic creature but there are various moments which cannot
explained by words. Words such as empathy, sympathy and appreciation arise not only from human vocal language. The sense of sight conducts to derive appreciation without words, furthermore, it also can be named a part of language. Preferably, human can communicate in silence sometimes. This is on extension line of my belief that visual art can extend understanding by sympathy. Inside loneliness, human-being recognises its fate and it relates to deep understanding that is all of us are lonely.
