할리우드의 ‘스튜디오 뮤지션’이며 프리랜서 바이올리니스트인 막내딸 성아(星兒)가 프랑스 서 인디스(French West Indies) 섬인 세인트 바쓰(St. Barth)로부터 뜻밖의 이메일을 보내왔다. 한 갑부의 사적인 파티에 초대된 100명의 손님들을 위해 공연할 미국의 인기 가수 제임스 테일러(James Taylor 1948 - )의 반주를 하기 위해서란다.
하늘과 땅과 바다, 자연의 경관은 물론, 투숙하게 된 초호화판 호텔시설에 그야말로 온갖 산해진미 음식이며 숙박료가 하루에 미화로 2만 4천 불이란다. 이 호텔 지하층에는 존 레넌이 그의 유명한 노래 ‘이매진(Imagine)'을 녹음한 녹음실도 있단다. 이런 환상적인 환경을 맛볼 수 있다는 사실만으로도 꿈만 같은데 제가 좋아하는 음악을 연주하면서 그 보수까지 받는다는 게 믿어지지 않는다고 했다.
그러면서 어쩌다 이렇게 상상을 초월하는 행운을 잠시나마 누릴 수 있게 되었는지 자문하다 보니 이 모든 것이 엄마 아빠의 헌신적인 지원과 희생으로 가능하게 된 것임을 깨닫고 뜨거운 눈물을 흘리게 되었다는 내용이었다. 두 언니와 자신이 엄마 아빠의 딸들임을 더할 수 없는 큰 축복으로 늘 깊이 감사하고 있음을 알아주시라는 것이었다. 그 한 구절만 인용하자면 아래와 같다.
“And we owe it all to you Mom and Dad. For the violin lessons, for school, for all the sacrifices, for the un-ending love and support. THANK YOU. I know I don’t tell you how much I appreciate all that you have given us. But please know how much we, all of us, appreciate EVERYTHING. We are very lucky girls.”
이 이메일을 받고 미국 휴스턴 그랜드 오페라 오케스트라(Houston Grand Opera Orchestra) 의 바이올리니스트인 큰딸 해아(海兒)와 스코티시 챔버 오케스트라(Scottish Chamber Orchestra)의 첼리스트인 둘째 딸 수아(秀兒)가 다음과 같은 답신을 보내왔다.
Very well said, Song-a! We are very lucky we had such supportive parents who left sunny Hawaii so we could study at a music school in rainy Manchester. Anyway, hope you have a great night and time there. Looks heavenly and how special it is that you can be there!

Wowee! Paradise, indeed! It all looks like something barely imaginable! Your introspective words are beautiful. They reflect sentiments that we all feel. The gratitude is immense and it’s good to say it. 딸들의 메일을 받고 나는 다음과 같이 답장을 했다.
너희들 엄마 아빠가 백년해로하지 못하고 결혼한 지 20년 만에 헤어지는 바람에 말할 수 없는 상처를 너희들에게, 그것도 너희들이 아주 어린 시절과 사춘기 때 주게 된 것을 언제나 마음 속 깊이 미안하게 생각하며 살아왔는데, 이렇게 불완전하고 부족한 부모를 너희들이 원망은커녕 깊이 이해해주고 잘 커 준 데 대해 너희 엄마는 물론 아빠도 늘 마음속으로 깊이깊이 감사하고 있단다. 너희들이 우리 딸들인 것이 우리에겐 더 바랄 수 없는 축복 중의 축복이란다. 특히 아빠가 너희들 이름을 지어 아빠가 꿈꾸고 희망한 대로, 너희들이 ‘하늘과 별과 바다의 아이들’로 아주 환상적인 삶을 살고 있다는 게 믿기지 않는 기적 중의 기적이란다.

Thanks for your kindest and sweetest words. The fact that your Mom and I could not carry on further with our unhappy life together and the fact that we got separated after 20 years of marriage must have deeply hurt you, especially during your childhood and adolescence. Nevertheless, instead of blaming your parents, you’ve understood us and you’ve grown up so well beyond belief. Each of you, all of you, indeed, you’ve become ‘the children of the sun/sea, sky and star,’ exactly as I named you when you were born. I did really have visions of you three living up to your names!!!!
