[이태상칼럼] ‘마시자 삶의 술, 사랑을 (Let’s Drink Love, the Wine of Life)’

“시인의 반란(反亂/叛亂)은 어김없이 근본적으로 보수적(保守的) 이다. 정치적으로가 아니고 상상의 나래를 펼친 정신적으로, 그것 도 땅과 공기, 해와 달과 별, 또는 인간의 꿈 같은, 주어진 것들에 대한 깊고 심원(深遠)한 사상적 경외심(敬畏心)에 찬 보수적이란 말이다. The revolt of the poet is invariably conservative at its roots. Not politically conservative, but imaginatively conservative, with a profound regard for what is given, as earth or air, sun or moon or stars, or the dreams of man.”    

미국의 시인 시드 코만(Cid Corman1924-2004)의 말이다. 
 
옛 페르시아의 시인 오마 카얌(Omar Khayyam, 1048-1131)은 이렇게 노래했다.
 
“이 순간에 행복하라. 이 찰나가 네 삶이니. 시집 한 권, 술 한 병, 빵 한 덩이 그리고 그대가 나뭇가지 아래 내 옆에 앉아 노래 한다면, 이 황막(荒漠)한 광야(廣野/曠野)도 더 이상 바랄 것 없는 지상(地上/至上)의 천국(天國)이 되리니. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life. Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough, A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse - and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness - And Wilderness is Paradise enow.”
 
“아, 우리가 맛볼 수 있는 걸 만끽하리. 술도 없고, 노래도, 노래 부를 사람도, 끝도 없는, 흙먼지 티끌로 우리 또한 돌아가기 전에! Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend, Before we too into the Dust descend; Dust into Dust, and under Dust to lie Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer, and — sans End!”
 
“사려(思慮) 깊은 영혼(英魂/靈魂)은 고독이라는 열쇠도 없고 보이지도 않는 베일 속으로 침잠(沈潛)하리니. The thoughtful soul to solitude retires. There was the Door to which I found no key; There was the veil through which I might not see.”
 
“어제, 이날 이때의 광증(狂症)이 생겼어라. 내일의 침묵 (沈默) 또는 승리(勝利)의 개가(凱歌) 절망(切望/絶望)의 비가(悲歌)도. Yesterday This Day’s Madness did prepare; Tomorrow’s Silence, Triumph, or Despair:”
 
“마시자. 네가 어디서 왔으며 왜 왔는지 모르나니, 마시자. 네가 어디로 왜 가는지 모르나니. Drink! for you know not whence you came nor why: drink! for you know not why you go, nor where.”
 
“움직이는 손가락은 글씨를 쓰고 글이 쓰여진 다음엔 없어진다네. The moving finger writes, and having written moves on.”
 
 “너의 모든 경건한 신앙심이나 너의 모든 슬기로운 지략(智略)으로도이미 쓰여진 글씨 한 줄의 반도 지울 수 없다네. Nor all thy piety nor all thy wit, can cancel half a line of it.”
 
“사람들이 창공(蒼空)이라 부르는 거꾸로 뒤집혀 반전(反轉)된 푸른 하늘 창궁(蒼穹) 아래 벌레처럼 기면서 살다 죽는 우리가 아닌가. 그렇다고 허무한 이 창공으로 도움을 청해 우리 두 팔 뻗어 손을 벌리지는 마세. And that inverted Bowl they call the Sky, Whereunder crawling coop'd we live and die, Lift not your hands to It for help — for It As impotently moves as you or I.”
 
“사람들이 자신들의 간절함으로 품는 세속적인 희망도 잠시 번갯불처럼 번쩍 빛나다가 사막 모래밭에 떨어지는 눈발 조각같이 곧 스러지는것이리. The Worldly Hope men set their Hearts upon Turns Ashes — or it prospers; and anon, Like Snow upon the Desert's dusty Face, Lighting a little hour or two — is gone.”
 
“그러니, 자, 네 잔을 채우게. 겨울이 지나고 다가오는 봄 불볕에 자네가 입고 있던 참회(懺悔)의 겨울옷을 태워버리게. 시간이란 세월의 새가 잠시 날개를 펴 펄럭이다 날기 시작하네. Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling: The Bird of Time has but a little way To flutter — and the Bird is on the Wing.”
 
시인일 뿐만 아니라 수학자, 천문학자, 철학자이기도 했던 오마 카얌은 ‘사랑’에 대해 다음과 같은 말도 남겼다.
 
"이 얼마나 슬픈 일이리.
어떻게 사랑할지를 모르는 마음이라면,
사랑에 취할 줄 모르는 가슴이라면.
사랑을 하고 있지 않다면 어찌 네가
눈부신 찬란한 햇살을 그리고 또 부드럽게
몽환적(夢幻的)인 달빛을 보고 감상할 수 있으리.”
 
“천 가지 후회를 가슴에 안고 우리는 떠나간다네.”
 
“술을 마시고 달을 쳐다보며 저 달이 그동안 수많은 문명과 문화가 생겼다가 없어지는 것을 지켜보았을 것을 생각해보게.”
 
“네 가슴에 사랑의 장미꽃 심었을 때 네 삶은 헛된 것이 아니었으리.”
 
“나는 사랑하는 연인들의 행복한 한숨 소리를 소중히 여기지만 위선자들이 지껄이는 기도소리는 경멸한다네.”
“사랑하는 사람에 대한 네 사랑이 술병이 술잔 사랑하듯 하기를 나는 빈다네. 살펴보게나, 알알이 포도알들이 제 소중한 피를 나누듯, 주고받는 입술과 입술이 어떻게 서로 사랑을 주고받는지를,”
 
“사랑하는 나의 님이시여, 새가 죽을 준비할 때처럼 나도 내 슬픔 일랑숨기리오.”
 
“우리는 사랑의 길을 가다 죽으리. 운명 아니 숙명의 발길이 우릴 짓밟으리. 그래, 나를 유혹하는 젊은 여인이여, 자리에서 일어나 그대의 입술을 내게 주오. 내가 먼지 티끌로 돌아가기 전에”
 
이런 사랑의 한 구도자(求道者)로 현대 서양 문학사상 가장 정열적이고 감동적인 시를 썼다는 영국 웨일스 출신 시인 딜런 토마스 (Dylan Thomas 1914-1953)를 들 수 있으리라.
 
특히 죽음과 종교와 Sex 그리고 사랑의 여러 가지 무드와 스타일로 무아(無我)의 황홀지경(恍惚之境)에서 부르짖는, 고음(高音)으로 오르기도 하고 비통(悲痛) 침울(沈鬱)한 저음(低吟/低音)으로 가라앉기도하는 언어의 발음(發蔭/發音)과 발성(發聲)에 매료(魅了)되고 집착 했던 그는 미국 순회강연 도중 39세로 그의 삶을 일찍 마감했다.
 
당시 검시관(檢屍官)의 진단서(診斷書)에 기재된 사망 이유는 그가 하룻밤에 스트레이트로 위스키를 연거푸 열여덟 잔이나 마신 그의 ‘두뇌(頭腦)에 대한 모독(冒瀆)’ 때문이었다.
 
그러나 생전에 쓴 ‘그리고 죽음이 지배하지 못하리라 (And death shall have no dominion, 1933)’에서 그는 이렇게 예언했다.
 
“미칠지라도
그들의 정신은
말짱할 것이오.
바다에 빠져도
그들은 다시
떠오를 것이오.
연인들은 없어져도
사랑은 남을 것이오.
그리고 죽음이 결코
지배하지 못하리라.
 
And death shall have no dominion
 
“Though they go mad
they shall be sane,
Though they sink through the sea
they shall rise again;
Though lovers be lost
love shall not;
And death shall have no dominion.)”
 
마치 “이는 그리스도께서 죽은 자 가운데서 사셨으매 다시 죽지 아니하시고 사망이 다시 그를 주장하지 못할 줄을 앎이로라.” (로마서 6장 9절) "Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9) 라고 했듯이…
 
그가 술(alcoholic spirits)에 취했었든 아니면 성령(Holy Spirit)에 취했었든 간에 일면으로는 주정뱅이 협잡 사기꾼 식객(食客)이었던 딜런 토마스도 예수처럼 그가 살아생전에는 꿈도 못 꾸던 영광(榮光/靈光)을 사후(死後)에 누리게 되었으니 말이어라.
 
그의 산문(散文)과 희곡(戱曲)을 통해 유감없을 정도로 삶에 대한 뜨거운 열정을 탕진(蕩盡)한 시인(詩人)으로서 게걸스러운 그의 영혼은 그가 정말 성령(性靈/聖靈)에 취했었든 안 했었든 간에 성신(聖神/性腎)의 거룩한 제단(祭壇)에 펼쳐지는 시심(詩心)의 향연(饗宴/香煙)에 참석하게 되어 흔희작약(欣喜雀躍)하였으리.
 
영국 런던 테임즈 강가에 자리한 웨스트민스터성당 ‘시인(詩人)의 코너 (Poets’ Corner, the name traditionally given to a section of the South Transept of Westminster Abbey because of the high number of poets, playwrights, and writers buried and commemorated there.)’에 한 자리를 차지, 그의 기념비가1982년 건립되었다. 그것도 그에 못지않게 방종(放縱) 방탕(放蕩)했던 19세기 낭만주의 바람둥이 시인 바이런경(Lord George Golden 1788-1824)의 기념비 바로 옆에.

생각건대
삶의 다른 한쪽
죽음을 의식하고
사는 것 이상의
종교도
 
죽음을 안고
사는 삶을
더할 수 없이
잘살아보는 것
이상의 예술도
 
사랑으로 숨 쉬고
사는 사랑 이상의
삶도 없다면
 
정녕 삶의 본질이
사랑이 아니더냐.
 
삶의 숨결이 사랑이요.
삶의 날개가 사랑이요.
삶의 승화가 사랑이요.
삶의 꿈꾸기 사랑이요.
삶의 완성이 사랑이요.
 
삶의 알파와 오메가도
오로지 사랑 아니더냐.
 
사랑을 모르고 사는 억만년보다
사랑하는 한순간이 그 얼마나
더 한없이 보람되고 복된 것이랴.
 
미칠 바에는
삶에 미치고
사랑에 미치리라.
 
취할 바에는
삶에 취하고
사랑에 취하리라.
 
정말
미치도록
취하도록
죽도록.
 
Wasn’t love
the essence of life,
indeed?!
 
Breaths of life were love.
Wings of life were love.
Dreams of life were love.
Completion of life was love.
 
Weren’t the beginning and
the ending of life love?!
 
I’d rather live for a moment in love
than for million years out of love.
Yes, this would be infinitely more blissful.
 
Were I to be mad,
I’d get mad in living.
Were I to be mad,
I’d get mad in loving.
 
Were I to be drunk,
I’d get drunk in life.
Were I to be drunk,
I’d get drunk in love.
Really, madly, drunkenly
to death!
