하나님의 부르심에 관한 소고 (4)

이 문제를 좀 더 구체적으로 살펴보기 위하여 실제적으로 있었던 주의 종, 즉 “어느 목사의 자살”에 관한 간증이야기를 하는 것이 좋을 것 같다. 어느 지방의 가장 큰 도시에서 목회하는 분으로 내가 잘 아는 목사님이 계셨다. 그의 모친이 손주들을 데리고 서울에서 이웃에 사시면서 우리교회에 나오셨기 때문에 더욱 친숙해서 그 당시 원주에 있는 김용기 장로님의 가나안농군학교에도 같이 가서 훈련을 받은 적도 있었다. 지금도 식탁에 앉아 맞은 편 벽에 걸려 있는 수료증이 기록되어 있는 접시를 바라보노라면 그 목사님과의 추억이 주마등처럼 지나가곤 한다. 그 목사님은 그 도시에서 가장 큰 대형교회로 성장시켜서 40여 년 전 그 당시에 자가용을 타고 다니실 정도로 여유가 있었는데, 언젠가 그 목사님이 소천 하셨다는 슬픈 소식이 들려왔다. 알고 보니 큰 연못에 빠져 자살했다는 것이다.

눈앞이 캄캄한 소식이었다. 알고 보니 교회에서 교인들과의 물질 관계의 시험으로 그 부담을 이기지 못하여 연못에 몸을 던졌다는 것이다. 겉으로 보기엔 주님의 부르심을 받아 은혜도 받고 교회도 크게 성장시켜서 목회도 성공한 것 같은데, 왜 자살을 했을까? 아니 그보다도 그 목사님이 구원받았을까? 아니면 구원받지 못했을까? 가 큰 이슈(issue)였던 것이다. 이를 어찌 생각하는가? 한 편에서는 자살했으니 구원을 받지 못했다고 했다. 그 이유는, 첫째로, 하나님께서 주신 하나님의 생명을 죽인 살인자이기 때문이며, 둘째로, 죽었으니 회개할 기회가 없어 구원을 받을 수 없다는 것이다. 그러나 다른 한 편에서는 그래도 목사로 불림 받아 하나님께서 크게 쓰신 종인데, 그렇게 허무하게 버림을 받았겠느냐? 하나님께서 그리도 무정하신 분이신가? 하나님께서 그 정도로 쓰신 주의 종인데 결정적인 성령거역 죄를 범하지 않는 한, 버림을 받을 수가 있겠느냐? 그 정도의 주의 종이라면 구원 받을 만 믿음이 없었겠는가? 등등의 이유를 들어 구원 받았을 것으로 생각하는 사람들도 있었다.

이 문제에 관하여 결정적인 판단은 주님에게 있겠지만, 성경적으로 말하자면, 한 마디로 답변할 수 있는 문제가 아니기 때문에 단도직입적인 언급은 피하는 것이 좋을 것 같다. 왜냐하면 구원의 조건이 그의 “행위”에 있는 것이 아니고, 오직 성령으로 거듭나는 “중생”에 있는데, 과연 위에서 언급한 대로 그 목사님이 중생했는지? 중생하지 못했는지? 에 관해서 인간으로서 알 수 없는 신비에 쌓여 있기 때문에 함부로 판단할 계제가 되지 못하는 것이라고 생각한다. 물론, 열매를 보아 그의 믿음을 알 수 있다고는 하지만, 그것도 인간의 지식으로는 한계가 있어 확실치 않으며, 더구나 개인에 대한 심판과 판단은 오로지 하나님에게만 있기 때문에 월권하지 않는 것이 좋고, 단지 그러한 행위를 보고 우리의 신앙의 노정에서 경계의 지표로 삼아 올바른 길을 가는 것이 유익할 것이다. 물론 자신에게는 자살하면 구원을 받지 못한다고 혹독하게 채찍질 하는 것이 양약이 될 것이다. 사실, 양약은 입에는 쓴 법이다.

오, 주여 죄인을 불쌍히 여기시옵소서.

A Brief Message on the Calling of God (4)

In order to concretely examine this problem, it may be helpful to give the testimony to an actual experience of “the suicide” of some pastor. I have a fellow pastor lived in a largest city of some province working at the biggest church. His mother participated in our church with her grand children because they lived in my neighborhood. And so I had participated in the Canaan Peasantry School of which Yonggi Kim the Elder governed so as to be trained with him. Now whenever I sit at the dining table and look at the certificate on the other side of the wall, many memories of him have been flashing before my eyes. The pastor contributed for his church to be grown up to the largest church in the city. He was well, and so he already had his own car at that time before 40 years. Some day I heard a sad news of his death. It was breaking news that he killed himself into the lake.

It was a breaking news. To my surprise, he threw his body into the lake to kill himself due to his debts of so much money from his church members. To see outwardly, he seemed that he succeeded in his ministry because after God’s calling he grew his church, nevertheless why did he kill himself? Rather than that problem, could he be saved? That’s a great issue. What do you think of this matter? On the one hand, the people said that he would not be saved because he killed himself. The reasons why: first, he is the murderer to kill his life bestowed from God, and second, he lost even the last chance to repent himself because already he died. But on the other hand, some people think that he could be saved due to his status and the mercy of God. The reasons are follows: he was called from God and used by God, who is not heartless, and could not be cast away as far as he did not decisively sin against the Holy Spirit. Did he not have the faith to be saved with the degree of his state?

Although the Lord Jesus Christ has the decisive judgement on this matter, speaking in the Scripture, it may be evitable to directly judge because it is not the question to be answer once. Because the condition of salvation does not develop upon “the work” but only upon “the regeneration” by the Holy Spirit. To be sure, whether was he born again as mentioned above or not? This is the very mistery that man cannot know. Of course, even though we can know his faith to be saved according to the fruits of him, therefore, it is too uncertain that the human knowledge has the limitation. Furthermore, because the judgement of the individual belongs to God alone, it may not be beyond the right of God. Rather it may be useful to go to the right way according to the indicator of the avenue. Of course, we must cruelly whip ourselves with the wordings: “If you kill yourselves, you will not be saved.” In fact, Good advice is seldom to swallow.

Oh! Lord, have mercy on the sinners.
