2017년에 미국에서 출간된 책 ‘성공과 운: 행운과 능력주의의 신화神話 Success and Luck: Good Fortune and The Myth of Meritocracy’의 한국어 번역본이 2018년 ‘실력과 노력으로 성공했다는 당신에게’란 제목으로 나왔다.
이 책에서 그 저자인 미국 코넬대학 경제학 교수인 로버트 H. 프랭크 Robert H. Fran는 성공했다는 사람들이 가능성, 기회, 우연한 운運 등을 의미하는 ‘기회’를 과소평가하는 경향이 있다고 주장한다. 성공여부成功與否를 결정 짓는 것이 노력이냐 아니면 운이냐 하는 문제를 다루고 있다. 이 두 요인要因밖에 없는 것 같지만 우리가 취할 수 있는 제3의 선택이 있음을 나는 제시해 보리라. 선택지選擇肢가 무엇이고 몇이든 네가 어떤 선택을 하는 가는 너의 선별選別 선택選擇 사항事項 아닌가?
내 인생 85년을 사는 동안 언젠가 오늘 같은 날이 있으리라고 나는 꿈조차 꾼 일이 없었다. 뒤돌아보건대 60여 년 전 내 첫사랑 ‘코스모스’에게 실연失戀 당하는 일어 없었더라면 나와 나 이외의 모든 존재가 코스모스에서 사랑의 무지개 타고 태어난 ‘코스미안’임을 깨닫게 되는 일도 없었으리라. 한 송이 소우주 小宇宙 코스모스꽃 같은 소녀를 사랑하게 된 소년이 대우주 大宇宙, 온 우주만물을 다 품게 되었으니 말어어라.
비록 사람은 누구나 때때로 행幸과 불행不幸을 만나지만 이를 어떻게 받아들이는가에 따라 전화위복轉禍爲福이 되기도 하고 그 반대로 전복위화轉福爲禍가 되지 않든가. 그래서 우리는 주위에 서 늘상 볼 수 있지 않나. 권세權勢와 성공成功의 정점頂點에서 추락하는 자들이 있는가 하면 별 볼 일 없이 아무 가망可望 없고 구제불능救濟不能의 패자敗者들이 절망絶望과 실패失敗의 잿더미 속에서 불사조不死鳥 피닉스Phoenix처럼 비상飛翔, 날아오르는 것을.
최근 내가 겪은 경험담을 좀 나눠보리라.
2017년 9월 두 권의 신간 서적 ‘39프로젝트’와 ‘태미사변泰美思辨’이 자연과인문 출판사에서 출간되어 20대 독자 추천 독서 목록에도 올랐었다.
‘39프로젝트’는 새로운 세상을 개척하는 창조적이고 ‘자유인自由人 정신精神의 free-spirited’ 몸과 마음이 젊은이들의 에세이집이고, ‘태미사변’은 공저자共著者인 이태상李泰相과 김미래金未來의 이름 첫 글자 ‘태’와 ‘미’를 따서 변증법적辨證 法的 대화對話 대담집對談集으로 ‘80세 노인과 24세 소녀의 사상로맨스’란 부제副題를 달았다.
뜻밖의 이 두 권의 성공적인 책 출간을 총괄總括 주관主管했고 아주 전도유망前途有望하며 경이驚異롭도록 유능한 공저자 김 양에게 앞으로 추진하게 될 ‘코스미안대학’ 설립과 남북 평화 통일을 위한 새로운 구국정당救國政黨 ‘코스미안당’ 창당創黨을 위한 전초적前哨的인 준비작업準備作業으로 옛날 ‘思想界’와 같은 맥락脈絡의 사람들의 정신적인 계몽啓蒙을 도모圖謀하는 우주적인 비전의 사상잡지思想雜誌 ‘코스미안’을 2018년 3월 창간토록 일임一任했었다.
앞에 언급한 思想界는 1953년 4월에 장준하 선생이 문교부 기관지인 <사상>을 인수해 창간한 종합교양지로 창간호 3000부가 발간과 동시에 매진되는 등 식자층識者層으로부터 폭넓은 인기를 끌었고, 남북통일 문제 및 노동자 문제 등 당시로써는 공산주의로 몰리기 쉬운 논쟁에서부터 시, 소설 등의 문학작품까지 폭넓은 분야의 글을 실었었다.
그러다 주필 장준하가 5.16 군사정변으로 정권을 탈취한 박정희의 부패, 친일, 언론탄압 의혹을 비판하면서 경영난에 시달렸고, 장준하가 국회의원이 되면서 부완혁 선생에게 주필직을 이양하고 재기를 노렸으나 끝내 1970년 5월의 205호를 마지막으로 발간이 중단되었다.
1960년대부터 나도 思想界에 틈틈이 기고寄稿도 하고 칼릴 지브란 작품을 번역 소개하기도 하다가 1970년 봄 부완혁 대표로부터 ‘무보수 게릴라 편집장’을 맡아달라는 청을 받고 그 당시 내 직장 일로 일본 출장을 다녀온 후 일을 시작하기로 했었는데 내가 일본에 있는 동안 대학 (서울 문리대) 후배인 시인 김지하의 담시譚詩 ‘오적五賊’ 필화사건筆禍事件으로 ‘思想界’는 박정희 군사정권에 의해 강제强制로 폐간廢刊되었던 것이다.
나의 속셈으로는 김 양을 새로운 한국 더 나아가 세계의 훌륭한 지도자로 키워 젊었을 때 내가 꾸었던 대망大望의 꿈을 이루어 보고 싶었었는데, 유감천만遺憾千萬스럽게도 이 ‘코스미안’ (잡지) 프로젝트는 불발不發, 유산流産되어버리고 말았다.
하지만 또한 너무너무 뜻밖에도 이 ‘코스미안 프로젝트’는 더 뜻깊고 훨씬 더 의미심장意味深長하게, 글로벌 아니 우주적 비전의 온라인 인터넷 일간지 ‘코스미안뉴스 The CosmianNews. http://wwwcosmiannews.com’로 2018년 7월 5일 창간, 부활復活하게 되었다.
2018년 그동안 우생愚生의 졸저拙著 10여 권을 내주신 자연 과인문 출판사 대표 전승선 시인께서 우생의 삶을 소재素材로 실화소설實話小說 ‘코스미안’을 집필, 2018년 6월 1일 책이 나왔다. 그래서 나는 한강 작가의 ‘채식주의자The Vegetarian’를 영문으로 번역해 2016년 노벨 문학상에 버금가는 영국의 맨부커국제상The Man Booker International Prize in 2016’을 번역자로서 그 저자 한강 작가와 함께 공동으로 수상한 데보라 스미스 양Ms. Deborah Smith을 접촉해 영문 번역을 의뢰해 봤으나 여의치 않아 서툰 영어 실력이지만 내가 직접 내 언어와 내 말로 영문으로 새로 작성해 영문판 ‘코스미안Cosmian’이 2019년 가을 미국과 영국에서 동시에 출간되었다. 여기서 우리 잠시 ‘상償’에 대해 생각 좀 해보자. 지난해 한국영화 ‘기생충’으로 또 올해에는 ‘미나리’로 봉준호 감독과 윤여정 배우가 아카데미 상을 수상하는 쾌거快擧가 있어 우리 한국인 모두 기쁘고 자축自祝할 일이지만 우리가 다시 좀 깊이 생각해 보면 그 어떤 선물膳物이나 상償은 받을 때보다 줄 때가 더 보람 있고 행복한 일이 아닌가.
영국 국영 방송 BBC가 한강과 ‘채식주의자’ 번역가 데보라 스미스가 세계 3대 문학상인 영국의 ‘맨부커상’ 인터내셔널 부문 수상 후 2016년 5월 17일 ‘채식주의자: 한국어를 배우고 상을 타는 방법’이란 제목의 기사에서 스미스가 2010년부터 한국어를 배운 사실을 언급하면서 한국어가 어떤 언어인지를 살펴봤다.
BBC는 세종대왕이 빌려 쓴 한자 대신 28개 자음과 모음으로 구성된 한글을 만들었고 이로 인해 백성들이 쉽게 글을 읽고 쓸 수 있게 됐다며 “슬기로운 자는 아침을 마치기도 전에 깨우칠 것이고, 어리석은 자라도 10일 안에 배울 수 있다”는 훈민정음 해례본의 문구를 전했다.
그러나 번역은 언어를 배우는 것과 다르다. 창의적인 과정이며, 스미스가 장편 ‘채식주의자’를 번역해 공동으로 수상한 이유인 것이다. 심사위원단은 해당 소설이 “영어로 완전한 목소리를 갖췄다”고 평했다. 번역가 스미스는 책의 리듬을 찾으려고 했다면서 “당신이 위대한 한국 문학 작품을 번역하고 있다면, 그 번역은 영문 작품으로도 훌륭해야 한다”고 강조했다. 이어 방해가 될 뿐이라면 통사론(문장의 구조나 구성을 연구하는 방법)을 두고 씨름할 필요가 없다”고 덧붙였다.
BBC는 “번역가는 상을 받을 만하며, 세종대왕도 마찬가지다”고 했는데 이 기사를 보면서 나는 속으로 이렇게 외쳤다.
“‘세종대왕도 마찬가지다’ 정도가 아니고 비교도 할 수 없이 노벨상, 맨부커상, 아카데미 상 등 그 어떤 상을 탈 정도가 아니라 그 이상 가는 ‘세종대왕상’을 줄 입장이어라!!!’
코스미안뉴스는 앞으로 세계 그 어떤 상보다 더 가치 있고 명예로울 올해로 제3회 ‘코스미안상’을 공모 중이다. 많은분들의 응모가 있기를 고대하면서 수상 여부와 상관없이 응모해 주시는 것만으로도 응모자 여러분께서 각자 자신에게 주는 가장 보람 있고 뜻깊은 선물과 상이 될 것을 확신해 마지않는다.
일체유심조一切唯心造라고 불교에서 말하듯 2019년 6월 30일 출시된 전승선 시인 작사와 싱어송 라이터 Singer-Songwriter 나비드Navid가 작사하고 부른 새 앨범 ‘코스미안의 노래 Cosmian Song’ 가사처럼 우리 모두 ‘우리 가슴 뛰는 대로’ 사노라면 우리 각자의 이 지구별 소풍이 더할 수 없이 즐겁고 행복하리라.
어린아이들 소꿉장난 같은 인생살이 이렇게 놀든 저렇게 놀든, 이게 아니면 저것, 이 사람 아니면 저 사람, 이 기회 아니면 더 좋은 기회와 축복이 있을 뿐이리
그래서 트리니다드 토바고에서 태어난 인도계 작가로 2001년 노벨 문학상을 수상한 비디아다르 수라지프라사드 나이폴 경 Sir V.(Vidiadhar) S.(Surajiprasad) Naipaul (1932-2018)도 생전에 이렇게 말했으리라.
“난 내가 열고 싶은 문을 알고, 그 문을 두드렸다. I knew the door I wanted. I knocked.”
이 말은 ‘세상에는 수많은 문이 있어, 한 문이 안 열리면 다른 문을 두드려 보고, 이 문도 안 열리면 또 다른 문이 열릴 때까지 두드려 보라’는 뜻이었으리라. 그리고 스티브 잡스 Steve Jobs(1955-2011)도 이런 말을 남기지 않았는가.
“(인생) 여정旅程 그 자체가 보상報償이자 보람이다. The journey is the reward.”
인생의 엄연儼然한 진실眞實을 우린 받아들일 수밖에 없고 그중 하나가 ‘언제 어디에서고 그 어떤 일이 일어나려면 온 우주가 공모해야 한다. For anything to happen anytime anywhere, the whole Cosmos has to conspire.’는 것이리라.
어떻든 우리 모두 미국의 1993년 노벨 문학상 수상 작가 토니 모리슨 Toni Morrison(1931- 2019)의 말에 동의同意 동감同感 할 수 있지 않으랴.
“인생여로人生旅路의 어느 한 지점地點에서 세상의 아름다움만으로 충분充分해 우린 만족할 수가 있게 된다. At some point in life the world’s beauty becomes enough.”
Cosmian Prize
‘Cosmian’ is one of two newly coined words by me. The other one is ‘Arainbow.’ That is to be right on the rainbow, instead of just beholding or pursuing it.
Cosmian News, a global online newspaper, was launched on July 5th, 2018, in Seoul, Korea. Its mission is to enlighten, inspire and uplift us all, regardless of nationality, race, sex, etc.; to realize that each and every one of us is a seeker on one’s own cosmic journey; and to turn our chaotic world into the cosmos of harmony, love and peace. To be such an aspiring Cosmian is to be Arainbow of Love. So let us all be be Cosmians Arainbow of Love.
If each one of us is indeed a micro-cosmos reflecting a macro-cosmos, all that existed in the past, all that exists at present and all that will exist in the future, we’re all in it together, all on our separate journeys to realize this. May every one of us be the sea of cosmos!

‘Success and Luck: Good Fortune and The Myth of Meritocracy’ by Robert H. Frank that came out in 2017 was recently translated and published in Korean, entitled ‘To the Successful by the Virtue of Competence and Endeavor.’
In this book, the author, a professor of economics at Cornell University, argues that the successful tend to underestimate the role that chance plays. The issue is whether it’s hard work or luck that decides the outcome. This may sound like there’s no other option, but I’d like to present the third option one can take.
Whatever and how many options there are, what you decide to take is up to your choice. Isn’t it?
All the while living my life for eighty-five years, I’ve never even dreamed that there would be a day like today, one day. Looking back, had I not lost my first love sixty odd years ago, I could not have come to realize that I and all others, all beings are ‘Cosmians’ born ‘Arainbow of Love’ from the Cosmos. A young boy who happened to fall in love with the microcosmos of a flower ended up embracing the whole macrocosmos.
Although everyone encounters from time to time both blessings and curses in disguise, doesn’t it make all the difference depending, no matter whether it’s a ‘fortune’ or a ‘misfortune’, on what one makes it to be after all.
We see all the time the fall of the most powerful and successful from the pinnacle of power and success, while some ‘hopeless’ and ‘helpless’ losers rise from the ashes of despair and failures, like a phoenix.
I’d like to share a bit of my most recent experience.
Following the publication of two books in September, 2017, ‘39 Project’ and ‘Tae-Mi Sa-Byun (Dialectic Dialogue: Thought Romance Between An 80-Year-Old Man and A 24-Year-Old Girl)’, l commissioned this very promising young entrepreneur who had pulled off these two great surprise feats of publishing success to launch a new quarterly ‘Cosmian’ in the same spirit and vein of the now defunct very popular intellectual magazine ‘Ssassanggye (The World of Thoughts) in March, 2018.
Although this project was aborted, it was replaced by another much more meaningful and visionary global online daily newspaper, The Cosmian News http://www. cosmiannews.com, which was launched on July 5, 2018.
In 2018, my Korean publisher, Ms. Jeon Seungseon, Poet, Novelist and Playwright, started writing a nonfiction narrative of my life, ‘Cosmian’ (in Korean), and it was published on June 1, 2018. So I contacted Ms. Deborah Smith, the English translator of Korean novelist Han Kang’s novel ‘The Vegetarian,’ which won The Man Booker International Prize in 2016. Since my approach was unsuccessful, I decided to translate it into English myself, revising and rewriting it in my own words. It was published in 2019 by AUSTIN MACAULEY PUBLISHERS, LONDON, CAMBRIDGE, NEW YOUR, SHARJAH.
Furthermore, a Cosmian Festival in celebration of the inauguration of The Cosmian News took place in Seoul (October 27- 28, 2018).
Therefore, as the saying goes, if not this, someone or something far better will turn up, sooner or later, if one never ceases to look for what one wants. I’m reminded of a comment confided by the late V. S. Naipaul (1932-2018), winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Literature, who was born in Trinidad in a family with Indian roots.
“I knew the door I wanted, I knocked.”
He must have meant to say that there are so many doors. If one door doesn’t open, I’ll knock another. If another door still doesn’t, I’ll knock yet another until one opens.
At the same time, we’d better recall Steve Jobs’ motto:
“The journey (itself) is the reward.”
It is tough to accept the hard truths of life but we all have to accept them anyway. One is that for anything to happen anytime anywhere, the whole Cosmos has to conspire. Won’t it be?!
Anyway, perchance, we all could agree with the American novelist Toni Morrison(1931-2019), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993, when she said that:
“At some point in life the world’s beauty becomes enough.”
Candidates for The Third (2021) Annual Cosmian Prize of Nonfiction Narrative are now being cordially invited to represent ‘Cosmian’ as the Spirit of this age (Zeitgeist).
Faced with the current Corona pandemic and dire climate change resulting in the pollution of what we breath, drink and eat, all caused by our capitalist materialism and industrial technology, we have to change our perspective and vision completely, if we are to survive as a species.
First of all, we have to realize our true identity as brief sojourners on this most beautiful and wonderful planet earth, a tiny starlet, like a leaf-boat floating in the sea of cosmos.
As such, we have to appreciate everything, including ourselves, with love and respect, believing in the oneness of us all, not only human beings and our fellow creatures but also all things in nature.
In order to come to this realization, we must get rid of all the arbitrary and self-righteous dogmatism of ideology, nationalism, racism, sexism, and what-not; in other words, the false dichotomy between black and white, right and wrong, us and them, etc.
If I were to put 85 years of my lifelong credo in a nutshell, it could be this:
Writing is not to be written but to be lived; words are not to be spoken but to be acted upon; no matter how great works of arts and literature are, they are at best mere images and shadows of life and nature; no love, philosophy, religion, thought, truth, or way can be caged, like the cloud, light, water and wind or stars.
Hence, the global online newspaper CosmianNews was launched in July 2018 to share our real-life narratives as described in the inaugural address:
All of us, born on this star called the planet earth to leave after a short stay, each living with whatever kind of love, in whatever style of life, in whatever color, shape and form, in one’s own way, each can say something special for one sentence, as different from each other. And yet if we were to find one common denominator, could it not be that ‘we all are Cosmians born Arainbow of Love?’
So on this proposition that ‘we all are Cosmians,’ I am inviting each and every one of you to share that sentence of yours. Each will be the song of a pearl-like life, or rather of a rainbow-like love.
I’d like to dedicate the poem ‘Praise Be’ written by the American publisher-Poet of my book ‘Cosmos Cantata,’ as the common motto for us all.

who in their waning years
make others happy
Praise be to those
who can spread joy
through trust and tolerance
Praise be to those
who look far beyond themselves
to their place in the cosmos
