4.19 61주년을 맞아 4.19 혁명에 목숨 바친 영령英靈들과 그 후손後孫들께 삼가 이 송가頌歌 송시頌詩를 바치면서 일월 성신日月星辰과 천지신명天地神明께 새삼 다짐해 빌어 본다.

“나는 내가 아는 것에 관해 쓰지 않는다 : 내가 뭘 아는지를 알아보기 위해 쓴다. I don’t write about what I know : I write in order to find out what I know.”
“인생이란 하나의 여정旅程이다. 하나의 허망虛妄한 상투적 常套的 표현表現인 클리셰이다. 하지만 삶의 탓이 아니다. 클리세란 완전完全히 받아들인 모든 진리眞理와 진실 眞實의 숙명宿命이다. 예를 들자면, 별들은 다이아몬드 금강석金剛石처럼 보인다. 하지만 그렇다고 (별들이 다이아몬드라고) 말할 수는 없다. Life is a journey. A hopeless cliché. But not its fault. Cliché is the fate of every fully absorbed truth. The stars, for example, do look like diamonds. You just can’t say so.” -Patricia Hampl, The Art of the Wasted Day
이상 세 마디는 미국의 교육자이자 작가 패트리시아 햄플Patricia Hampl (born in 1946)이 그녀의 저서著書 ‘써버린 날의 예술 The Art of the Wasted Day(2018)’에서 하는 말이다. 그녀는 또 다른 저서 ‘하나의 낭만적 교육 A Romantic Education(1981)’에서 이렇게 말한다.
“글 쓰는 사람이 나는 되고 싶었다. 누군들 안 그러랴. 글을 쓰면서도 의사나 교사나 미생물학자나 수녀 또는 피아니스트가 될 수 있다고 나는 생각했다. 그 밖에도 영화배우, 해양학자, 수목樹木 관리인 등의 직업이 내겐 매력 있어 보였다. 또 한편으로는 별로 매혹적이 아니었으나 그저 나는 글을 썼을 뿐이다. 그 보상報償으로 돋보이던 다른 모든 일들이 근처에 접근조차 못 할 만치 생생生生한 현실감을 나는 느낄 수 있었다. 어떤 직업의 유혹도 결국 글 쓰는 일로 귀착歸着되었다. 글 쓴다는 것이 얼마나 모든 일에 나 자신을 몰입沒入시켜 네 본질을 시험하고 실험하는가를, 다시 말해 대양 大洋과 현미경, 선생님과 식탁 등 세상 모든 것을 내포하는 것임을 내가 직감直感했기 때문이다. 글쓴다는 것이 모든 것의 핵심요체核心 要諦로 모든 사물事物의 그 심혼心魂이요, 글 쓰는 사람이 되고 싶다는 것은 하나의 개성 있는 생명, 삶을 사랑하는 사람이 되고 싶어 하는 것임을.”
아, 그래서 그녀는 또 이렇게 말했으리라.
“글 단어들이란 부분적으로는 思想이고 思惟이지만 대부분 마음속 깊은 곳에서 샘 솟듯 울림을 주는 음악이다. 따라서 생각한다는 자체가 어쩌면 오케스트라와 같아 우리 마음과 정신과 혼이 세계를 지휘하는 것이고, 그건 곧 세상을 건설해 만들어내는 것 이리라. Words are partly thoughts, but mostly they’re music, deep down. Thinking itself is, perhaps, orchestral, the mind conducting the world. Conducting it, constructing it.”

아, 지당至當하신, 천지당千至當 만지당萬至當 아니 천지당天地當 우지당宇至當하신 코스미안의 말씀이렷다. 글 쓰는 사람 따로 없이 우리 모두 다 글 쓰는 사람이다. 손으로만 쓰지 않고 눈, 귀, 입, 코, 머리와 가슴은 물론 팔다리, 발바닥으로도.
사람이 정말 사람답게 산다는 것은 두 눈을 크게 뜨고 마음의 문을 활짝 열어 세상의 모든 아름다움을 보고 그 신비로움에 경탄하며 축복 된 삶의 기쁨을 순간순간 만끽滿喫하는 것이리라.
그렇다면 주입식 암기식 응시요령의 앵무새 학교 공부 많이 하는 것보다 차라리 전국 방방곡곡 여러 곳으로, 또 가능하면 세계 각국으로 여행 많이 하면서 많이 보고 느끼고 생각하면서 세상 공부 인생 공부 많이 하는 것이 더 바람직하지 않으랴.
직장 때문에 우리 가족이 영국에 가 살면서 애들 학교 친구들이 툭하면 부모 따라 학교 수업을 빼먹으면서 여행 다니는 것을 나는 처음엔 이상하게 여겼었다. 한번은 신문에서 영국의 어느 한 가족이 가산家産을 다 정리해서 배 한 척을 구입, 몇 년을 세계 각지로 항해할 여장을 갖추고 나이 어린 세 자녀가 읽을 책만도 수천 권을 싣고 영국을 떠났다는 기사를 읽으면서 그 용단勇斷에 나는 크게 놀랐었다.
그러다가 1978년 여름 우리 온 가족이 영국을 떠나 하와이로 이주, 6개월 동안 미국 각지와 한국으로 여행한 후 애들 음악 교육 때문에 영국으로 되돌아가 애들이 먼저 다니던 학교에 복학했을 때 애들 학업 성적이 전보다 떨어지기는커녕 더 나아졌었다. 몽땅 빼먹은 지난가을 한 학기 수업을 따라가려고 분발해서였는지, 아니면 여러 곳으로 여행하면서 정신적 그리고 정서적으로 많은 자극을 받고 애들의 잠재능력이 더 많이 개발되었던 것인지 모를 일이다.
그 후로 언젠가 미국의 시사주간지 뉴스위크Nesweek에서 미국의 어느 한 여학생이 고등학교를 졸업하면서 부모로부터 대학 4년 다닐 학자금을 받아 그 돈으로 대학 다니는 대신 세일링 보트Sailing Boat를 사서 세계 일주를 하기로 했다는 기사를 보고 이 얼마나 멋진 진학코스인가 나는 크게 감탄했다.
진실眞實로 인생살이가 망망대해茫茫大海에 떠도는 일엽편주一葉片舟 같다면 우리 각자 자기 나름의 방향감각方向感覺을 갖고 자기가 향해 해보고 싶은 대로 자기가 좋아하는 별 따라 살아보는 것 이상 없지 않겠는가 하며.
나는 아주 어려서부터 진정한 ‘글’이란 ‘그리움’의 준말로, ‘인생 이란 종이나 화폭에다 삶이라는 펜이나 붓으로 사랑의 피와 땀과 눈물방울을 잉크나 물감으로 쓰고 그리는 것’이라 생각해 왔다.
올해 제3회 ‘코스미안상’ 공모에 많은 코스미아뉴스 독자 여러분 께서 응모해주실 것을 고대하면서 ‘우리 모두에게 바치는 이 송가 頌歌 송시頌詩 An Ode to Us All’을 이렇게 영문으로 적어본다.
An Ode to Us All
Dear All,
Candidates for The Third (2021) Annual Cosmian Prize of Nonfiction Narrative are being cordially invited to represent “Cosmian” as the Spirit of this Age (Zeitgeist).
Faced with the dire climate change and the current Corona pandemic, resulting in the pollution of what we breathe, drink and eat, all caused by our capitalist materialism and industrial technology, we have to change our perspective and vision completely, if we are to survive as a species.
First of all, we have to realize our true identity as brief sojourners on this most beautiful and wonderful planet earth, a tiny starlet, like a leaf-boat floating in the sea of cosmos.
As such, we have to appreciate everything, including ourselves, with love and respect, believing in the oneness of us all, not only human beings and our fellow creatures but also all things in nature.
In order to come to this realization, we must get rid of all the arbitrary and self-righteous dogmatism of ideology, nationalism, racism, sexism, and whatnot; in other words, the false dichotomy between black and white, right and wrong, us and them, etc.
If I were to put 85 years of my lifelong credo in a nut- shell, it could be this:
Writing is not to be written but to be lived; words are not to be spoken but to be acted upon; no matter how great works of arts and literature are, they are at best mere images and shadows of life and nature; no love, philosophy, religion, thought, truth or way, can be caged, like the cloud, light, water and wind or stars.
Hence, the global online newspaper Cosmian News was launched in July 2018 to share our real-life narrative as described in the inaugural address:
All of us, born on this star called the planet earth to leave after a short stay, each living with whatever kind of love, in whatever style of life, in whatever color, shape and form, in one’s own way, each can say something special for one sentence, as different from each other. And yet if we were to find one common denominator, could it not be that “we all are Cosmians born Arainbow of Love?”
So on this proposition that “we all are Cosmians born Arainbow of Love” I am inviting each and every one of you to share that sentence of yours. Each will be the song of a pearl-like life, or rather of a rainbow-like love.
I’d like to dedicate the poem, Praise Be, written by the American poet-publisher of my book Cosmos Cantata (2013), as the common motto for us all.

make others happy
Praise be to those
who find light in the darkness
and share it with others
Praise be to those
who can spread joy
through trust and tolerance
Praise be to those
who look far beyond themselves
to their place in the cosmos
