코넬대 경제학과 교수 Robert H. Frank가 쓴 ‘Success and Luck: Good Fortune and the Myth of Meritocracy’는 2016년 나온 책이다. 이 책 이 2018년 ‘실력과 노력으로 성공했다는 당신에게’란 제목으로 한국어로도 번역 출간됐다.
노력했다고 다 성공하는 게 아니고 운이 따라줘야 한다는 걸 여러 사례와 경제학적 모델로 보여주는 내용이다. 말하자면 ‘노력이냐’ ‘운발’이냐의 문제인데 나는 제3의 ‘대응방식’을 내가 적용해 온 대로 제시해 보리라.
지금까지 살아온 내 인생 85년 동안 오늘 같은 날이 있을 줄은 꿈도 못 꾼 일이다. 돌이켜 보면 60여 년 전 내 첫사랑이 이루어졌더라면 나 자신이, 아니 이 세상에 태어난 모든 사람이, 아니 우주 만물이 ‘코스미안’임을 깨닫게 되는 일이 없었을 것이다. 어린 소년이 한 송이 아주 작은 소우주 코스모스 꽃을 사랑하다가 대 우주 코스모스를 품게 되었으니 말이다.
사노라면 우연히 전화위복轉禍爲福이나 전복위화轉福爲禍가 되는 일이 비일비재非一非再하지만 또 한 편으로는 ‘복福’이나 ‘화禍’가 닥쳤을 때 이에 대해 각자가 어떻게 대응하고 대처하는가에 따라 그 결과가 하늘과 땅의 차이가 나지 않던가. 성공의 정상에서 자만하다가 추락하는가 하면 실패와 절망의 잿더미에서 불사조처럼 되살아나 비상할 수 있다. 그 예로 내가 직접 최근 겪은 한두 사례를 들어 보리라.
2017년 9월 자연과인문 출판사에서 ’39 프로젝트’와 ‘태미사변 泰未思辨’이란 책 두 권이 동시에 나올 수 있도록 모든 기획을 총괄한 아주 유능한 서울대 재학 중이던 여학생에게 2018년 3월 옛 ‘사상계思想界’ 같은 지성 계간지 ‘코스미안’ 창간 프로젝트를 맡겼었다. 그런데 어떤 피치 못할 사정 때문인지 몰라도 이 새로운 프로젝트가 허무하게 무산霧散되는 바람에 훨씬 더 의미 있는 새로운 글로벌 인터넷 신문 ‘코스미안뉴스; http://www. cosmiannews.com 를 2018년 7월에 창간하게 되었다.
그뿐만 아니라 우생愚生의 삶을 소재로 '자연과인문' 출판사와 코스미안뉴스 대표 전승선 시인께서 집필해 2018년 6월 출간한 실화소설 ‘코스미안’의 영문번역을, 한강 작가의 ‘채식주의자’를 번역한 영국의 데보라 스미스양에게 적극 의뢰해 보았으나 여의치 않게 되는 바람에, 내가 직접 영문으로 내용 일부를 수정 번역하면서 새로운 영문원고가 완성되었다. 이를 처음으로 그 일부를 코스미안뉴스에 연재하다가 영문판 ‘Cosmian’이 2019년 가을 그리고 그 후속편 ‘Cosmian Rhapsody’가 2020년 가을 미국과 영국에서 동시 출간되었다.
그리고 2019년 10월 27일 ‘코스미안뉴스’ 제1회 코스미안상 시상식과 응모작 선집 ’69 프로젝트’ 출판기념회가 서울 세종 문화회관에서 열렸고, 지난해 2020년 가을 제2회 코스미안상 시상식과 응모작 선집 ’49 프로젝트’ 출간기념회는 코로나 팬데믹 사태로 비대면으로 거행되었으며 올가을에는 제3회 코스미안상 시상식과 응모작 선집 출간기념회가 대면 또는 비대면으로 있을 예정이다.
세상사 새옹지마塞翁之馬/새옹득실塞翁得失이라고 영어로 표현해서 'If not this, someone or something better'를 찾다 보면 찾아지는 것 같다. 2018년 85세로 타계한 인도계 영국 노벨문학상 수상작가 V S 나이폴이 생전에 한 말이 떠오른다.
“난 내가 열고 싶은 문이 어떤 문인지 알고 있었다. 그래서 그 문을 두드렸다. I knew the door I wanted, I knocked.”
이 말을 이렇게도 바꿔 볼 수 있으리라.
‘세상엔 수많은 문이 있을 테니 이 문이 안 열리면 저 문, 아니면 또 다른 문을 노크해 보리라. 어떤 문이 열릴 때까지. There must be so many doors. If one door doesn’t open, I will knock another. If another door still doesn’t, I will knock yet another until one opens.’
스티브 잡스의 좌우명이었다는 '여정 자체가 보상이다. The journey is the reward’라는 말처럼 우리도 여정 자체를 보람으로 삼으면 긍정하지 않을 일은 없을 것이다. 나는 ‘진인사대천명盡人事待天命’이라는 말을 평생 가슴에 품고 살아왔다. 인간이 할 수 있는 일은 최선을 다하고 나머지는 하늘에 맡기는 일이다.
이를 내가 달리 표현하자면 ‘세상에 어떤 일이 언제 어디에서든 일어나려면 온 우주가 공모해야 한다. For anything to happen anytime anywhere, the whole Cosmos has to conspire.’가 되리라.
어떻든 덕德은 그 자체로서 보답報答이고 보상報償이며 축복 祝福이듯이 일도 삶도 그렇고 사랑하는 만큼 그만큼 행복할 수 있으리라.

You are the very Cosmos Itself
‘Success and Luck: Good Fortune and The Myth of Meritocracy’ by Robert H. Frank that came out in 2016 was translated into Korean and published in 2018 entitled (in Korean) ‘To the Successful by the Virtue of Competence and Endeavor.’
In this book, the author, a professor of economics at Cornell University, argues that the successful tend to underestimate the role that chance plays. The issue is whether it’s hard work or luck that decides the outcome. This may sound like there’s no other option, but I’d present the third option one can take. Whatever and how many options there are, what you decide to take is up to your choice. Isn’t it?
All the while living my life for eighty-five years, I’ve never even dreamed that there would be a day like today, one day. Looking back, had I not lost my first love sixty odd years ago, I could not have come to realize that I and all others, all beings are ‘Cosmians’ born ‘Arainbow of Love’ from the Cosmos. A young boy who happened to fall in love with the micro-cosmos of a flower ended up embracing the whole macro-cosmos.
Although everyone encounters from time to time both blessings and curses in disguise, doesn’t it make all the difference depending, no matter whether it’s a ‘fortune’ or a ‘misfortune,’ on what one makes it to be, after all.
We see all the time the fall of the most powerful and successful from the pinnacle of power and success, while some ‘hopeless’ and ‘helpless’ losers rise from the ashes of despair and failures, like a phoenix.
I’d like to share a bit of my most recent experience.
Following the publication of two books in September 2017, ‘39 Project’ and ‘Tae-Mi Sa-Byun (Dialectic Dialogue - Thought Romance Between An 80-Year-Old Man and A 24-Year-Old Girl)’ l commissioned this very promising young entrepreneur who had pulled off these two great surprise feats of publishing success to launch a new quarterly ‘Cosmian’ in the same spirit and vein of the now defunct very popular intellectual magazine ‘Ssassanggye (The World of Thoughts) in March 2018.
For totally unaccounted reasons, this new project was aborted. Instead, another much more meaningful and visionary global online newspaper The Cosmian News http:www.cosmiannews.com was launched in July 2018.
Early in 2018, my Korean publisher, Ms. Jeon Seungseon, Poet, Novelist and Playwright, started writing a non-fiction narrative of my life, ‘코스미안Cosmian’ in Korean, and it was published in June 2018. So I contacted Ms. Deborah Smith, the English translator of Korean novelist Han Kang’s novel ‘The Vegetarian,’ which won The Man Booker International Prize in 2016.
Since my approach was unsuccessful, I decided to translate it into English myself, revising and rewriting it in my own words. It was being serialized in part in the Cosmian News and the English version ‘Cosmian’ was published in the fall of 2019 and ‘Cosmian Rhapsody,’ the sequel to ‘Cosmian’ came out last fall in 2020, both in England and in the U.S.
Furthermore, The First Cosmian Prize Award ceremony was held at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul in October 2019 and The Second Cosmian Prize Award ceremony took place on line in October 2020 due to the Corona pandemic. The Third Cosmian Prize Award ceremony will take place in the fall this year.
Therefore, as the saying goes, if not this, someone or something far better will turn up, sooner or later, if one never ceases to look for what one wants. I’m reminded of a comment confided by the late V. S. Naipaul (1932-2018), winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize for Literature.
“I knew the door I wanted, I knocked.”
He must have meant to say that there are so many doors. If one door doesn’t open, I’ll knock another. If another door still doesn’t, I’ll knock yet another until one opens.
At the same time, we’d better recall Steve Jobs(1955-2011)’s motto:
“The journey (itself) is the reward.”
It is tough to accept the hard truths of life but we all have to accept them anyway. One is that for anything to happen anytime anywhere, the whole Cosmos has to conspire. Won’t it be?!
Anyway, as virtue is its own reward and blessing, so be it with work and life. One is happy as much as one loves someone or something.
Was the grass wet with early morning dew
to pay your dues of life and love?
Were they dewdrops of life-giving and love-making
or rather teardrops of joy and sorrow?
Was that for breathing in this magic world to the full,
and breathing it out to the last before transforming back
to the mystical essence of the Cosmos?
What does it mean to live your life?
What does it mean to have lived your life?
For what and for whom you should live?
Where could one find the answer?
