궁술弓術archery은 활을 사용하여 화살로 목표물을 맞히는 기술 또는 무술武術을 통칭하여 부르는 말이다. 휘어진다, 휜다는 ‘활’이라는 말은 인도 남부에 거주하는 드라비다인들이 사용하는 드라비다어Dravidian languages에 그 어원이 있다고 한다.
‘화살’이란 순우리말은 ‘활’이란 활 ‘궁弓’의 한자漢字와 ‘살’의 합성어로 ‘살’은 ‘부챗살’, ‘창살’ 등에 쓰인 말처럼 뼈대 부분 ‘살’은 ‘햇살’, ‘빛살’, ‘물살’, ‘몸살’ 등과 같이 기운을 의미하며, 우리 ‘활’ 에서는 ‘화살을 쏜다’고 하지 않고 ‘화살을 보낸다’고 표현하는데 여기에는 명리학에서 말하는 죽일 ‘살煞’의 개념을 고려해 활로 ‘살煞’을 날려 보낸다는 뜻이 담겨있다고 한다.
하지만 우리 모든 우주 나그네 코스미안 입장에서 보면 이 ‘화살’의 ‘살’은 죽일 ‘살煞’이 아니고 우리 서로 사랑하는 가슴 ‘사슴’이 뛰노는 ‘사랑’과 ‘삶’의 준말 ‘살’이라고 해야 하리라. 이 궁술에 대한 몇 마디 아래와 같이 인용해보리라.
