2021년 11월 3일자 미주 뉴욕판 한국일보 오피니언 [인사이드] 칼럼 '사회적 단절' 필자 여주영 고문은 이렇게 칼럼 글을 맺고 있다.
"로마인들은 교량은 하늘과 땅을 연결하는 상징이라고 믿었다. 그래서 끊어진 지역을 서로 연결하는 다리를 놓아 융성한 발전을 꾀했다. 지금처럼 거리두기로 단절되기 쉬운 인간의 관계도 어느 때 보다 더 강한 연결이 필요할 때가 아닐까."
이 '단절'을 극복할 '연결' 고리가 있다면 '사랑'밖에 없으리라.
프랑스 작가 빅토르 위고 Victor Hugo (1802-1885)가 사랑에 대해 한 말 좀 우리 음미해보자.
“우주를 단 하나의 존재로 축소하고, (그) 단 하나의 존재를 신神으로 확대하는 것, 이것이 사랑이다. The reduction of the universe to a single being, the expansion of a single being even to God, this is love.”
"깜깜한 밤도 지나고 밝은 해가 떠 오르리라. Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise."
"다른 사람을 사랑한다는 건 신神의 얼굴을 보는 거다.To love another person is to see the face of God."
"인생에서 가장 행복한 일은 우리가 사랑받고 있다는 확신을 갖는 거다. 있는 그대로, 아니 그럼에도 불구하고 말이다. The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves."
"(그 누군가의) 사랑을 받는다는 건 얼마나 대단한 일인가! (그 누군가를) 사랑한다는 건 얼마나 그 더욱 대단한 일인가! What a grand thing, to be loved! What a grander thing still, to love!"
"(그 누군가 또는 뭐를) 사랑하거나 사랑했다는 것으로 족하리니, 더 이상 바랄 것이 없어라. 굴곡진 인생에서 찾을 수 있는 다른 진주는 없으리. To love or have loved, that is enough. Ask nothing further. There is no other pearl to be found in the dark folds of life."
"이상하게 들릴런지 몰라도, 소년이 느끼는 참 사랑의 첫 증상은 겁먹은 소심성이고 소녀의 경우는 용감한 대담성이다. And then, strange to say, the first symptom of true love in a young man is timidity; in a girl, it is boldness."
"어떻게 두 (사람의) 입술이 합쳐질 수 있었을까. 어떻게 새들이 노래하고 눈이 녹고, 장미꽃이 피고, 아득한 언덕 너머 서있는 나무들 사이로 새벽녘 동이 틀 수 있을까? 하나의 입맞춤 키스, 더 이상 말이 필요 없어라. How did it happen that their lips came together? How does it happen that birds sing, that snow melts, that the rose unfolds, that the dawn whitens behind the stark shapes of trees on the quivering summit of the hill? A kiss, and all was said."
"여인이 네게 말할 때면 그녀가 눈으로 무슨 말을 하는지 경청傾聽/敬聽하라.
When a woman is talking to you, listen to what she says with her eyes."
"난 거리에서 사랑에 빠진 한 청년을 만났어. 그의 모자와 코트는 낡았고 소매 없이 어깨에 걸친 긴 겉옷 망토는 (manteau)는 팔꿈치가 다 나갔고 (빗)물이 그의 구두에 질척대고 (있었지만) 별들이 그의 영혼에 반짝이고 있었어.
I met in the street a very poor young man who was in love. His hat was old, his coat worn, his cloak was out at the elbows, the water passed through his shoes, - and the stars through his soul."
"인생이 꽃이라면 사랑은 (그 꽃에서 생기는) 꿀이어라. Life is the flower for which love is the honey."
"내가 그대에게서 느끼는 감정은 땅이라기보다 구름 한 점 없는 하늘이어라. What I feel for you seems less of earth and more of a cloudless heaven."
"사랑은 영혼 그 자체의 숨결, 곧
천국의 하늘 숨이지. Love is a portion of the soul itself, and it is of the same nature as the celestial breathing of the atmosphere of paradise.
"떨어져 있는 애인들은 천만 가지 상상과 환상을 통해 서로 만나는 현실을 경험하지. (비록) 눈으로 마주 보고 편지를 주고 받지 못한다 해도 두 사람은 신비롭게도 서로에게 새들의 노래와 꽃들의 향기와 어린애들의 웃음 소리를 수많은 방법으로 보낼 수가 있어라. Separated lovers cheat absence by a thousand fancies which have their own reality. They are prevented from seeing one another and they cannot write; nevertheless they find countless mysterious ways of corresponding, by sending each other the song of birds, the scent of flowers, the laughter of children.
"사랑은 신神이 제공하는 유일한 미래다. Love is the only future God offers."
"사랑은 나무와 같아 우리 존재 속에 깊이 뿌리 내리고 스스로 자란다. Love is like a tree, it grows of its own accord, it puts down deep roots into our whole being."
"사랑의 결핍증으로 죽는 건 끔찍한 일이다. 영혼의 질식사다. To die for lack of love is horrible. The asphyxia of the soul."
"세상에 자식을 사랑하지 않는 아버지는 있어도 손주를 끔찍이 사랑하지 않는 할아버지는 없다. There are fathers who do not love their children; there is no grandfather who does not adore his grandson."
"사랑은 믿음의 반쪽이다. Loving is half of believing."
"하늘이 모든 별들을 다 품을 수 있듯이
(우리도) 우리 가슴에 사랑하는 자식, 부모형제, 애인, 친구 모두를 품을 수 있다. Son, brother, father, lover, friend. There is room in the heart for all the affections, as there is room in heaven for all the stars."
"가슴이 눈 먼 것이 사랑이라고 사람들은 말하지만 나는 말하노니, 사랑하지 않는 것이 눈 먼 거다. They say love is blindness of heart; I say not to love is blindness."
"한 밤 중이다. 하늘을 다 갖고 떠난 존재, 그녀. 같은 무덤 속에 손가락지 낀 채 우리 나란히 누워 어둠 속에서도 때때로 다정히 손가락을 어루만질 수 있다면 그것이 내 영원이 되리라. I am in the night. There is a being who has gone away and carried the heavens with her. Oh! to be laid side by side in the same tomb, hand clasped in hand, and from time to time, in the darkness, to caress a finger gently, that would suffice for my eternity.”
위에 인용한 빅토르 위고의 말은 생명의 신비란 다름 아닌 사랑이란 뜻이리라. 우리 모든 코스미안은 이렇게 사랑으로 사는 순간순간에서 영원을 사는 것이리.
