안녕하십니까.

 

2021 12 18일자 코스미안뉴스에서  전 대통령 님의 옥중 서신을 모은  ‘’그리움은 아무에게나 생기지 않습니다 이달  출간된다는 반가운 뉴스를 접하고 삼가 이렇게 축하 글을   적게 되었습니다

 

새해 2 2일이면 만으로 70세가 되시니 올해 12 30일에 만으로 85세가 되는 저보다  다섯  정도 젊고옛날 조혼시대 였다면 저에게 딸벌이 되시지요그래서 인생 선배로서 주제넘게 조금이라도 깊은 위로와 찬사의 뜻을 전하고 싶어서입니 .

 

인명은 재천이란 말이 있듯이 우리 모두가 각자의 부모와 조상시대와 장소주위환경을 선택하지 않은  태어났고세상 만사 모든 일과 인간을 포함한 자연만물이 우연이라기보다는 필연적 으로 일어날  해서 아니 일어날 수밖에 없어서 생긴다는 생각이 듭니다.

 

영어에 모든 것이 기여寄與한다 Everything serves a purpose’ 표현이 있는데 세상에 버릴  하나 없다 말인  같습니다 이런 말도 있지요.  ‘죽음은 모든 사람을 평준화시킨다 Death levels all men’이라고요이는 죽음뿐이 아니고 매사가 그렇지 않을까요얻는  있으면 잃는  있고 잃는  있으면 얻는  있지 않던가요마치 낮과 밤이 있듯이 이것이 음양의 이치가 아니겠습니까

 

지난 2014년 7월 10일 출간된 우생의 역서 예언자 The Prophet (1923)’에서 칼릴 지브란(Kahlil Gibran 1883-1931) 하는   우리 되새겨볼까요

 

슬픔이  탈을 벗으면

다름 아닌 기쁨이리오.

 

슬픔이 파고들면 들수록

 많은 기쁨이 고이리오.

 

술잔은 불에 구워진 .

피리는 칼에 깎여진 .

 

기쁠  깊이 생각하면

지금 기쁨을 주는 것이

일찍 슬픔을 주었던 .

슬플  슬피 살펴보면

한때 즐거움이었던 .

 

참으로는 기쁨과 슬픔

둘이 아니고 하나리오.”

 

Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.

 

And the selfsame well from which

your laughter rises was oftentimes

filled with your tears.

 

And how else can it be?

 

The deeper that sorrow carves into

your being, the more joy you can contain.

 

Is not the cup that holds your wine

the very cup that was burned

in the potter’s oven?

 

And is not the lute that soothes your spirit,

the very wood that was hollowed with knives?

 

When you are joyous,

look deep into your heart

and you shall find it is only

that which has given you sorrow

that is giving you joy.

 

When you are sorrowful

look again in your heart,

and you shall see that

in truth you are weeping for

that which has been your delight.

 

Some of you say,

“Joy is greater than sorrow,”

and others say,

“Nay, sorrow is the greater.”

 

I say unto you,

they are inseparable.

 

Together they come,

and when one sits alone

with you at your board,

remember that the other

is asleep upon your bed.

 

Verily you are suspended like scales

between your sorrow and your joy.

 

Only when you are empty

are you at standstill and balanced.

 

When the treasure-keeper lifts you

to weigh his gold and his silver,

needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall.

 

깨달음 싸고 있는 껍질

 껍질 벗겨지는 것이

괴로움이라고 한다면

 아픔 견뎌야  .

 

 여름 가을 겨울이

 따라 찾아 오듯이

우리 가슴  계절도

반겨 맞을 일이리오.

 

뿌린 대로 거둬들임

모든 것을 바로잡는

보람 있는 일이리오.

 

Your pain is the breaking of the shell

that encloses your understanding.

 

Even as the stone of the fruit must break,

that its heart may stand in the sun,

so must you know pain.

 

And could you keep your heart

in wonder

at the daily miracles of your life,

your pain would not seem

less wondrous

than your joy;

 

And you would accept

the seasons of your heart,

even as you have always accepted

the seasons that pass over your fields.

 

And you would watch with serenity

through the winters of your grief.

 

Much of your pain is self-chosen.

 

It is the bitter potion by which

the physician within you

heals your sick self.

 

Therefore trust the physician,

and drink his remedy

in silence and tranquility:

 

For the hand, though heavy and hard,

is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,

And the cup he brings,

though it burns your lips,

has been fashioned of the clay

which the Potter has moistened

with His own sacred tears.

 

다른 사람에게 하는 

바로 자신에게 하는 .

 

죄와 벌을 안다는 것이

바로 사람 되는 것이리.

 

어떤 성자나 의인이라도

우리 모두의 사람됨보다

조금도  나을  없고

세상의 어떤 죄인이라도

우리 모두의 사람됨보다

조금도 못하지 않으리니.

 

나뭇잎  어느 하나도

나무 모르게  혼자서

단풍 들고 떨어지거나

죄를 짓는 어떤 죄인도

우리 모두의 잘못 없이

어떤 죄도 짓지 못하리.

 

 가다 어느 누가 넘어지면

따라 오는 모든 사람들에게

발부리에 걸리는  있다고

조심하라 알려 주는 것이리.

 

목숨을 빼앗기는 사람도

재산을 도둑맞는 사람도

죽음과 도난당하는 일에

의인도 죄인의  지음에

아무 책임이 없지 않으리.

죄인이야말로 피해자로서

죄없는 사람들을 대신해

 짓고  받는 것이리오.

 

It is when your spirit goes wandering upon the wind,

That you, alone and unguarded, commit a wrong unto

others and therefore unto yourself.

 

And for that wrong committed must you knock and

wait a while unheeded at the gate of the blessed.

 

Like the ocean is your god-self;

It remains for ever undefiled.

 

And like the ether it lifts but the winged.

 

Even like the sun is your god-self;

It knows not the ways of the mole

nor seeks it the holes of the serpent.

 

But your god-self dwells not alone in your being.

 

Much in you is still man,

and much in you is not yet man,

But a shapeless pigmy that walks asleep

in the mist searching for its own awakening.

 

And of the man in you would I now speak.

 

For it is he and not your god-self nor the pigmy

in the mist, that knows crime and the punishment of crime.

 

Oftentimes have I heard you speak of one

who commits a wrong as though he were not one of you,

but a stranger unto you and an intruder upon your world.

 

But I say that even as

the holy and the righteous

cannot rise beyond the highest

which is in each one of you,

So the wicked and the weak

cannot fall lower than

the lowest which is in you also.

 

And as a single leaf turns not yellow but

with the silent knowledge of the whole tree,

So the wrong-doer cannot do wrong

without the hidden will of you all.

 

Like a procession you walk

together toward your god-self.

 

You are the way and the wayfarers.

 

And when one of you falls down

he falls for those behind him,

a caution against the stumbling stone.

 

Ay, and he falls for those ahead of him,

who though faster and surer of foot,

yet removed not the stumbling stone.

 

And this also, though the word lie

heavy upon your hearts:

The murdered is not unaccountable for his own murder,

And the robbed is not blameless in being robbed.

 

The righteous is not innocent

of the deeds of the wicked,

And the white-handed is

not clean in the doings

of the felon.

 

Yea, the guilty is oftentimes

the victim of the injured,

And still more often

the condemned is the burden bearer

for the guiltless and unblamed.

 

You cannot separate

the just from the unjust

and the good from the wicked;

For they stand together

before the face of the sun

even as the black thread and

the white are woven together.

 

And when the black thread breaks,

the weaver shall look into the whole cloth,

and he shall examine the loom also.

 

If any of you would bring to judgment

the unfaithful wife,

Let him also weigh

the heart of her husband in scales,

and measure his soul with measurements.

 

And let him who would lash the offender

look unto the spirit of the offended.

 

And if any of you would punish

in the name of righteousness

and lay the ax unto the evil tree,

let him see to its roots;

And verily he will find the roots of

the good and the bad,

the fruitful and the fruitless,

all entwined together

in the silent heart of the earth.

 

And you judges who would be just,

What judgment pronounce you upon him

who though honest in the flesh

yet is a thief in spirit?

 

What penalty lay you upon him who slays

in the flesh yet is himself slain in the spirit?

 

And how prosecute you him

who in action is a deceiver and an oppressor,

Yet who also is aggrieved and outraged?

 

And how shall you punish those

whose remorse is already greater

than their misdeeds?

 

Is not remorse the justice

which is administered by that very law

which you would fain serve?

 

Yet you cannot lay remorse

upon the innocent

nor lift it from

the heart of the guilty.

 

Unbidden shall it call

in the night,

that men may wake and

gaze upon themselves.

 

And you who would understand justice,

how shall you unless you look upon

all deeds in the fullness of light?

 

Only then shall you know that

the erect and the fallen are

but one man standing in twilight

between the night of his pigmy-self

and the day of his god-self,

And that the corner-stone of the temple

is not higher than the lowest stone in its foundation.

 [이태상 칼럼] ‘현대판 우화寓話코스미안 산고産苦

 

오늘 아침(2020 10 4 일요판 뉴욕타임스 오피니언 페이지의 인기 칼럼니스트 모린 다우드Maureen Dowd (1952 - ) 그녀의 칼럼을 ‘현실이 트럼프 세계의(거품공기 방울을 터뜨리다Reality Bursts The Trump World Bubble) 라는 제목 으로 시작하면서   문장에서 고대 로마 제국 시대의 정치인 사상가철학자인 세네카Lucius Annaeus Seneca 4 BC- 65 AD 말을 인용했다.

 

운명/숙명은 (자발적으로따르는 자는 인도해주고 따르지 않는 자는 끌고 간다Fate leads the willing and drags along the reluctant.”

 

그러면서 그녀는 “(그동안 평생토록 성공적으로 사기를  왔지 )  끝내는 백악관에 있는 사기꾼이(코로나바이러스에겐 사기    없었다And, in the end, the con man in the Oval Office could not con the virus.”라고 우리 동양의 촌철살寸哲殺人 사자성어四字成語 경구警句들을 떠올리게 한다자업자득 自業自得자승자박自繩自縛  우리말로 ‘ 무덤 제가 판다 뜻으로그런데 이것이 어디 트럼프에게만 해당하는 일이랴.

 

만물의 영장이란 극도의 자기기만과 자만심에서 ‘인류Human species’ 지난 2 천여 년간 특히 서구의 산업혁명 이후로 자행 해온 인종주의Human Racism 자초한 결과가 오늘의 기후 변화와 코로나 팬데믹 사태가 아닌가이런 생물/무생물의 말종 末種 아니 망종亡種   좋은 샘플이 트럼프로 대표되는 인간 이란 말이다그러니 우리 모두 대오일번大悟一番 크게   깨달  개과천선改過遷善해야  절체절명絶體絶命의 때가  것이어 .

 

그동안 우리가 살아온 세상이 어떤 것이었는지 확인하기 위해이제 우리보다 앞서  지구별에 잠시 다녀간 우주 나그네 코스미안 칼릴 지브란Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) 그의 우화집 <광인狂人 The Madman: His Parables and Poems, 1918 > 에서 하는 말을 경청傾聽/敬聽해보리라.

 

완전무결한 세상

 

신神들 가운데  잃은 신이신 잃은 영혼들의 신이시여   들어주소서미쳐 방랑하는 정령들인 우리를 보살펴주시는 인자한 운명의 신이시여   들으소서가장 불완전한 나는 완전무결한 종족 가운데 거居하나이다.

 

하나의 인간 카오스로혼동되어 어지러운 별구름으로완성된 세계들-여러 가지 생각과  정돈된 꿈과 등기 등록된 시각과 관점 그리고 제정된 법률과 순결한 질서가 정연한 사람들 사이로 나는 움직이나이다.

 

신이시여저들의 공덕은 자로 재어지고 저들의 죄악은 저울로 달아지며 어두워지는 황혼빛에 죄악인지 공덕인지 애매한 수많은 일까지  기록되고 편람되어지나이다.

 

이곳에서는 낮과 밤이 행동의 사계절로 나누어지고  점의 오류  있을  없는 정확성의 지배를 받나이다먹고 마시고 잠자고  입는 그리고 이런 일상에 지치는 일에서도.

 

일하고놀고노래하고 춤추다시간 되면 잠자리에 눕는 일에서 .

 

이렇게 생각하고이만큼 느끼다가 지평선/수평선 위로 어떤 별이 떠오르면 생각하고 느끼는 일을 중단하는 쉬는 일에서도.

 

미소 지으면서 이웃을 착취하고우아하게 손을 저으면서 ‘선물 하사하고신중하고 분별 있게 칭찬하고조심스럽게 책망하고 한마디로  영혼을 파멸시키고입김으로  육신을 불태우고 나서는 그날의 일이 끝났다고   씻는 일에서도.

 

이미 설정된 기존 질서에 따라 사랑하고사전에 정립된 양식과 방식으로 자신 스스로 최고의 흥을 돋우고아주 그럴듯하게 신神 들을 섬기고예술적으로 악마들 비위를 맞추다가 마치 기억상실 증에라도 걸린 것처럼 모든 것을 잊어버리는 일에서도.

 

어떤 동기를 부여하고심사숙고하고꿀처럼 달도록 행복하고고상하고 품위 있게 고통을 감내하다가 내일이면 다시 채워지도록 오늘 마시던 컵에 담긴 모든  비우는 일에서도.

 

신이시여 모든 일들을 이성理性과 법률에 따라 미리 결심 하고 생각해 내고 정확히 시행해오다가 미리 처방된 방식 으로 종식하고 매장하는 일에서도.

 

그리고 인간 영혼 속에 자리한 무언無言의 무덤들까지도 번호를 매겨 표시하는 일에서도.

 

이처럼 완전무결한 세상은 최고로 훌륭하고최상으로 경이롭고신神의 정원에 가장 무르익은 과일이며 우주의 최대 걸작품이라고 하나이다.

 

하지만신이시여 내가 이런 곳에 있어야만 하나이까나는 아직  쏟아 보지 못한 열정과 정열의 새파란 하나의 씨앗이고  東과 서西를 찾지 않는 하나의 광풍狂風이며 폭발해 타버린 유성 流星의 망연茫然한 별가루 티끌일 뿐이옵니다.

 

신神들 가운데  잃은 신이신 잃은 영혼들의 신이시여 내가 여기 있나이까?

 

“The Perfect World”

 

God of lost souls, thou who are lost amongst the gods, hear me:

 

Gentle Destiny that watchest over us, mad, wandering spirits, hear me:

 

I dwell in the midst of a perfect race, I the most imperfect.

 

I, a human chaos, a nebula of confused elements, I move amongst finished worlds—peoples of complete laws and pure order, whose thoughts are assorted, whose dreams are arranged, and whose visions are enrolled and registered.



Their virtues, O God, are measured, their sins are weighed, and even the countless things that pass in the dim twilight of neither sin nor virtue are recorded and catalogued.



Here days and nights are divided into seasons of conduct and governed by rules of blameless accuracy. To eat, to drink, to sleep, to cover one’s nudity, and then to be weary in due time.

 

To work, to play, to sing, to dance, and then to lie still when the clock strikes the hour.



To think thus, to feel thus much, and then to cease thinking and feeling when a certain star rises above yonder horizon.



To rob a neighbour with a smile, to bestow gifts with a graceful wave of the hand, to praise prudently, to blame cautiously, to destroy a soul with a word, to burn a body with a breath, and then to wash the hands when the day’s work is done.



To love according to an established order, to entertain one’s best self in a preconceived manner, to worship the gods becomingly, to intrigue the devils artfully—and then to forget all as though memory were dead.

 

To fancy with a motive, to contemplate with consideration, to be happy sweetly, to suffer nobly—and then to empty the cup so that tomorrow may fill it again.



All these things, O God, are conceived with forethought, born with determination, nursed with exactness, governed by rules, directed by reason, and then slain and buried after a prescribed method. And even their silent graves that lie within the human soul are marked and numbered.

 

It is a perfect world, a world of consummate excellence, a world of supreme wonders, the ripest fruit in God’s garden, the master-thought of the universe.



But why should I be here, O God, I a green seed of unfulfilled passion, a mad tempest that seeketh neither east nor west, a bewildered fragment from a burnt planet?



Why am I here, O God of lost souls, thou who art lost amongst the gods?

 

아는 만큼 보이고 보이는 만큼 알게 된다지만우리 각자는 각자 대로 자신의 삶을 사랑하고 사는 만큼 사는 것이리라.

 

독일계 미국 시인 찰스 부코우스키Charles Bukowkski (1920-1994)   편도 우리 함께 음미해보리라.

 

무리의 천재성

 

인간에겐 언제나

군대가 필요로 하는

배반과 증오와 폭력과 부조리가 있지

살인을 제일 많이 하는 

살인하지 말라고 설교하는 자들이고

제일 심하게 미워하는 

가장  목소리로 사랑을 외치는 자들이며

전쟁을 제일 잘하는 

평화를 주창하는 자들이지

신神을 전파하는 자들이야말로

신이 필요하고

평화를 부르짖는 자들이야말로

평화를 모르며

평화를 부르짖는 자들이야말로

사랑을 모르지.

경계하라 설교하는 자들을

경계하라 안다는 자들을

경계하라  독서하는 자들을

경계하라 빈곤을 싫어하거나

자랑스러워 하는 자들을

경계하라 칭찬을 받으려고

먼저 칭찬하는 자들을

경계하라 제가 모르는  두려워서

 비난하는 자들을

경계하라 혼자서는 아무것도 아니기에

세상 무리를 찾는 자들을

경계하라 보통 남자와 보통 여자를

경계하라 그들의 사랑을

그들의 사랑은 보통이기에

그들은 보통만을 찾지

그러나 그들의 증오엔 천재성이 있어

 죽이고 아무라도  죽일  있지

고독을 원하지도 이해하지도 못해

자신들과 다른 것은 뭣이든

 파괴하려는 자들을

예술을 창작할  없어

예술을 이해할  없는 그들은

자신들이 예술을 창조하지 못하는 

모두  세상 탓이고

 사랑이 부족한  깨닫지 못한 

 사랑이 불충분하다고 믿으면서

 미워하다 못해

그들의 미움이 완전해 지지

빛나는 다이아몬드같이

칼날같이

 같이

호랑이같이

독초같이

그들 최상의 예술이지

 

‘The Genius of the Crowd’

 

there is enough treachery, hatred violence absurdity in the average human being to supply any given army on any given day

 

and the best at murder are those who preach against it

and the best at hate are those who preach love

and the best at war finally are those who preach peace

 

those who preach god, need god

those who preach peace do not have peace

those who preach peace do not have love

 

beware the preachers

beware the knowers

beware those who are always reading books

beware those who either detest poverty

or are proud of it

beware those quick to praise

for they need praise in return

beware those who are quick to censor

they are afraid of what they do not know

beware those who seek constant crowds for

they are nothing alone

beware the average man the average woman

beware their love, their love is average

seeks average

 

but there is genius in their hatred

there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you

to kill anybody

not wanting solitude

not understanding solitude

they will attempt to destroy anything

that differs from their own

not being able to create art

they will not understand art

they will consider their failure as creators

only as a failure of the world

not being able to love fully

they will believe your love incomplete

and then they will hate you

and their hatred will be perfect

 

like a shining diamond

like a knife

like a mountain

like a tiger

like hemlock

 

their finest art

 

 모두가 깜깜한 카오스의 밤을 밝혀 바야흐로 개명 천지 코스미 안시대를 열기 위한 코스모스 산고産苦의 고진감래 苦盡甘來  되는 것이리라.

 

인간의 작은 그림은 우리가 그리는 것이겠지만 우주적  그림은 그려지는 것이라면카오스의 불행 비극조차도 우리는 긍정적으로 이용하고 수용해 낙관할  있으리라.

 

미국 작가 필립 로스Philip Roth (1933-2018) 그의 작품 방송 On the Air: A Long Story (1970)’에서 말하듯이

 

세상이 일종의 쇼라면우리 모두   하늘 높이 계신  연출가  물색 스카우트해 놓은 탤런트 연예인들이라면, ‘ 인생쇼 출연하는인생의 목적이 오락이라고 생각해 보라.”

 

오늘날 우리가 신문이나 TV  뉴스를 보면 영화 보는  같지  전쟁영화괴기영화탐정영화비극영화희극영화도색영화연애영화만화영화  

 

정말 인생이 드라마와 같다면 여러 가지 배역이 필요하지 않은가따라서 ‘악역 맡는 사람도조연도엑스트라도 필요하지 않으랴그러니 너도나도 각자대로  맡게 되는 역할이 다를  밖에 없으리라.

 

어떻든 우린 모두 각자의 배역을 맡아 최선이든 최악이든  그림  우리  함께 그리게 되는 것으로 각자가 각자대로 감사하고 자축할 일이어라우리 각자의 공과功過를 떠나서 말이어라

 

부디 새해에도  건강하시고 보람된 나날이 되기를 축원합니다.
