3월 13일자 뉴욕타임스는 미니애폴리스시 정부가 조지 플로이드 유가족에게 2천 7백만 달러를 지불하기로 합의했다고 보도했다.
“나도 숨을 쉴 수 없다. I too cannot breathe.”
지난해 미국에서 백인 경찰의 과잉 단속 과정에서 사망한 흑인 조지 플로이드(George Floyd) 사건에 대한 항의 시위가 전 세계로 번졌었다.
영국 런던 중심가에 2020년 5월 31일 수천 명이 결집해 미국 시위대에 지지를 보냈다고 AP 통신이 보도했고, 독일, 덴마크, 스위스, 뉴질랜드 등 여러 나라에서도 미 대사관 앞 시위대가 몰렸었다.
2020년 6월 2일자 뉴욕타임스에는 ‘조지 플로이드에게 바치는 (In dedication to George Floyd) 헌사(獻詞/獻辭)로 마틴 루터 킹 주니어(Martin Luther King Jr. 1929-1968)의 다음과 같은 말이 전면광고로 게재되었다.
“Only way we can really achieve freedom is to somehow hunker the fear of death. But if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live. Deep down in our nonviolent creed is the conviction – that there are some things so dear, some things so precious, some things so eternally true, that they’re worth dying for. And if a man happens to be 36 years-old, as I happen to be, some great truth stands before the door of his life – some great opportunity to stand for that which is right and that which is just. And he refuses to stand up because he wants to live a little longer, and he’s afraid his home will get bombed, or he’s afraid that he will lose his job, or he’s afraid that he will get shot, or beat down by state troopers. He may go to live on until he’s 80. He’s just as dead at 36 as he would be at 80. And the cessation of breathing in his life is merely the belated announcement of an earlier death of the spirit. He died. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true. 이상의 인용문을 미국 건국 국부의 한 사람이었고 초대(1776-1779)와 제6대(1784-1786) 버지니아주 주지사를 지낸 패트릭 헨리(Patric Henry 1736-1799)가 1775년 행한 영국으로부터 미국의 독립을 쟁취하자는 연설문의 한 문장 “자유가 아니면 죽음을 달라. Give me liberty or give me death.”로 대체할 수 있으리라.
이는 동서고금을 통해 계속되는 이슈(issue)가 아닌가. 좋든 싫든 적자생존(適者生存)과 약육강식(弱肉强食)의 인간세계뿐만 아니라 자연계에 상존하는 ‘정글의 법칙(The Law of the Jungle)’이 아닌가 말이다.
이를 내가 다른 말로 표현하자면 누구에게나 언제 어디에서나 최종 결과라 할까 가장 중요한 생존 법칙의 요점은 단 한 구절로 요약될 수 될 수 있으리라. (The bottom line may be summed up in a phrase.)
“가라앉지(익사하지) 않으려면 헤엄쳐라. Sink or Swim.”
“내 탓이 아니고, 네 탓이지 YOUR FAULT, NOT MINE”
이솝우화에 나오는 이 이야기는 각자가 제 운명의 주인이라는 교훈을 주고 있다.
한 나그네가 긴 여정에 지쳐 깊은 우물가에 쓰러졌다. 전해오는 얘기로, 그가 물에 빠지기 직전에 행운의 여신이 나타나 그를 잠에서 깨우면서 말하기를
“이보세요, 선생님, 빌건대 정신 좀 차리고 일어나세요. 당신이 물에 빠져 죽으면 사람들은 내 탓이라며 내게 오명을 씌울 거에 요. 사람들은 아무리 자신들의 어리석음으로 초래했더라도 모든 불행을 내 탓으로 돌린답니다. A traveler, wearied with a long journey, lay down over- come with fatigue on the very brink of a deep well. Being within an inch of falling into the water, Dame Fortune, it is said, appeared to him and, waking him from his slumber, thus addressed him: Good Day, sir, pray wake up; for had you fallen into the well, the blame will be thrown on me, and I shall get an ill name among mortals; for I find that men are sure to impute their calamities to me, however much by their own folly they have really brought them on them-selves.”
미국의 유명 흑인 토크쇼 호스트, 배우, TV 제작자, 미디어 경영자로 자선사업가인 오프라 윈프리(Oprah Winfrey, 1954 - )의 아래와 같은 말도 유비무환(有備無患)의 교훈을 준다.
“내 인생에서 행운이란 없다. 아무것도 없다. 많은 은총과 많은 축복과 많은 신적(神的)인 디자인 설계가 있었을 뿐이나 나는 행운을 믿지 않는다. 나에게는 행운이란 준비상태로 기회의 순간을 포착하는 것이다. 기회의 순간을 맞을 준비 없이는 행운 이란 없다. 나로 말할 것 같으면 내 손, 그리고 또 하나의 손, 내 손보다 크고 내 힘보다 큰 힘이 있었기에 나 자신도 모르는 방식으로 내가 준비되어 왔다는 사실이다. 나와 모든 사람에게 이 진실은 우리 삶에 일어나는 모든 일 매사가 우리를 앞으로 닥칠 순간에 대비 시켜 준다는 거다. Nothing about my life is lucky. Nothing. A lot of grace, a lot of blessings, a lot of divine order, but I don’t believe in luck. For me, luck is preparation meeting the moment of opportunity. 자, 이제 지난 2016년 미국 대선 공화당 경선에서 거의 모든 사람의 예상외로 16명의 쟁쟁한 미국 공화당 정치인 경쟁자들을 따돌리고 최종 지명자가 됐을 뿐만 아니라 11월 본선에서도 또한 모든 사람들의 예상 밖으로 민주당의 막강한 힐러리 클린턴을 제치고 당선자가 된 도널드 트럼프의 다음과 같은 말도 좀 음미해 보자.
“당신은 ‘행운이란 기회가 준비를 만날 때 찾아온다’는 말을 익히 들었을 것이다. 난 이 말에 동의한다. 누구는 운이 좋다고 마치 자신들은 그렇지 못하다는 걸 강조하듯이 사람들이 말하는 걸 자주 들었다. 내가 생각건대 사실은 불평하는 사람들이 운이 좋도록 노력하지 않는다는 거다.
당신의 운이 좋아지려면 큰일을 준비하시라. 그렇다. 영화를 보는 게 더 재미있겠지만 당신이 영화산업에 뛰어들 생각이 없다면 시간 낭비다. 당신의 재능을 개발하려면 노력이 필요하고, 노력이 행운을 가져온다. 성공에 대해 이런 마음가짐과 태도를 갖는 것이 당신의 보람 있는 인생코스를 밟는 지름길이다.
한동안 말들이 많았다. 좌절감이다 걱정거리다 하는 것들을 가슴 밖으로 발산해버리는 게 건강에 좋다고. 어느 정도까진 그럴 수도 있겠지만 지나치면 곤란하다. 최근 글을 하나 읽었는데 아무런 대책 없이 불평만 하는 건 육체적으로나 정신적으로나 해롭다는 거였다.
인터넷 시대가 도래해 블로그 등 각종 매체가 있어 사람들이 너무 많은 시간을 부정적인 데 소모하고 있는데, 불균형이 강조되고, 이런 부정적인 포커스는 상황을 호전시키지 못한다. 어떤 문제에 대한 해결책을 생각해보기도 전에 그 문제에 빠져 허우적거리느라 진이 다 빠지지 않도록 할 일이다. 그러는 건 미친 짓이다.
긍정적이고 창의적으로 생각하고 관찰하기 위해서는 열정적인 정신력과 에너지가 있어야 한다. 부정적으로 되기는 쉽고 안일하다. 당신 정신력의 포커스를 적극적인 해결책에 맞추라. 그러면 이런 네 정신상태가 네 행운을 창조할 것이다.”
“You may have heard the saying ‘Luck is when opportunity meets preparedness.’ I agree. I’ve often heard people talking about so-and-so is so lucky as if to emphasize that they themselves are not lucky. I think what’s really happening is the complainers aren’t working themselves into luck.
If you want to be lucky, prepare for something big. Sure, it might be more fun to watch movies, but unless you’re going into the film industry, it’s not the best use of your time. Developing your talents requires work, and work creates luck. Having this attitude toward success is a great way to set your self on a rewarding course for your life.
There was a lot of talk for a while about venting your frustrations and anxieties and how it might be healthy to get them off your chest. To a point, yes, but to an exaggerated degree, no. I read an article recently about how complaining without doing anything about it is actually detrimental to physical and mental well-being.
With the advent of blogging and all the other sorts of opinion-gushing venues available to everyone now, people are spending way too much time harping on negative themes. The emphasis is out of balance, and the negative focus doesn’t help the situation. Don’t dwell so much on a problem that you’ve exhausted yourself before you can even entertain a solution. It just doesn’t make sense.
It takes brainpower and energy to think positively and creatively-and to see creatively and positively. Going negative is the easy way, the lazy way. Use your brain-power to focus on positives and solutions, and your own mind-set will help create your own luck.”
이상과 같은 트럼프의 말은 미국의 발명왕 토머스 에디슨 (Thomas Edison 1847-1931)의 말을 상기시킨다.
“천재는 1%의 영감과 99%의 땀이다. Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”
동시에 미국의 신화종교학자 조셉 캠벨(Joseph Campbell 1904-1987)의 말이 떠오른다.
“아모르 파티(amor fati)란 니체의 사상이 있다. 직역하자면 네 운명을 사랑하라는 말이지만 실은 네 삶을 사랑하라는 말이다. 그의 말대로 네게 일어나는 단 한 가지 일이라도 부정하면 이에 얽힌 모든 일이 풀어져 허물어지게 된다. 그뿐만 아니라 동화 수용될 사정과 상황이 도전적이고 위협적일수록 너를 큰 사람으로 만들어 준다. 네가 용납하는 귀신은 네게 그의 마력을 넘겨주고, 삶의 고통이 클수록 그 보람도 큰 법이다. There is an important idea in Nietzsche of amor fati, the love of your fate, which is in fact your life. As he says, if you say no to a single factor in your life, you have un-raveled the whole thing. Furthermore, the more challenging or threatening the situation or context to be assimilated and affirmed, the greater the stature of the person who can achieve it. The demon that you can swallow gives its power, and the greater life’s pain, the greater life’s reply.”
영어 속담에 “아침에 일찍 일어나는 새가 벌레를 잡는다. The early bird catches the worm.”라고 하지만 “일찍 일어나는 벌레는 잡아 먹힌다. The early worm gets eaten.”라는 사실도 명심할 일이다. 9·11사태 때 일찍 출근한 사람들은 죽고 늦은 사람들은 살지 않았나.
독일 철학자 아르투어 쇼펜하우어(Arthur Schopenhauer 1788-1860)가 그의 ‘삶의 지혜에 대한 에세이들(The Essays on the Wisdom of Life, 1851)’에서 하는 말도 우리 좀 곱새겨보자.
“옛날 선인(先人)이 진실로 말하기를 세상에 세 가지 큰 세력이 있다. 슬기와 힘과 운인데 내 생각에는 그중에서 운의 영향력이 제일 크고 유효하다. 한 사람의 삶은 배를 타고 항해하는 것과 같아 운이란 바람에 따라 배가 빨리 가기도 하고 길을 잃기도 한다. 사람이 할 수 있는 일이란 별로 없다. 열심히 계속해서 노를 저으면 항해에 도움이 되겠지만 갑자기 돌풍이라도 불게 되면 노를 젓기는 헛수고가 된다. 그러나 순풍을 만나게 되면 노를 저을 필요도 없이 순항을 하게 된다.
운의 위력이 스페인의 한 속담에 잘 표현되어 있다. ‘네 아들에게 행운을 주고 바닷물에 던져버려라.’ 하지만 일컫노니 이 우연이란 고약한 놈이라서 믿을게 못 된다. 그래도 우리에게 빚진 것도 없고 또 우리가 받을 권리나 자격은 없지만 어디까지나 일방적으로 선심과 은총에서 주는 선물로 주겠다면 이런 은혜를 찬스 말고 그 누가 우리에게 우연히 베풀 수 있겠는가? 다만 우리는 언제나 겸허히 기쁘게 이를 받을 희망을 품을 뿐이다.
누구나 시행착오의 미로를 통해 한평생을 살아온 삶을 돌이켜 보면 지나치게 부당한 자책을 하기보단 여러 시점에서 행운을 놓치고 불행을 맞은 사실을 발견하게 된다. 왜냐 할 것 같으면 한 사람의 인생살이가 전적으로 자신의 소관 사항이 아닌 두 가지 요인의 산물인 까닭에서다. 일어난 일련의 사태와 이를 어떻게 자신이 처리해왔는가로 이 둘이 항상 상호작용하면서 서로를 수정해왔기 때문이다. An ancient writer says, very truly, that there are three great powers in the world: sagacity, strength, and luck. I think the last is the most efficacious. A man’s life is like the voyage of a ship, where luck acts the part of the wind and speeds the vessel on its way or drives it far out of its course.
All that the man can do for himself is of little avail; like rudder, which if worked hard and continuously may help in the navigation of the ship; and yet all may be lost again by a sudden squall. But if the wind is only in the right quarter, the ship will sail on so as not to need any steering.
The power of luck is nowhere better expressed than in a certain Spanish proverb: ‘Give your son luck and throw him into the sea.’ Still, chance, it may be said, is a malignant power, and as little as possible should be left to its agency. 이상의 말을 한 구절로 줄인다면 ‘운에 맡기기(trusting the luck)’이 될 테고, 우리말로는 진인사대천명(盡人事待天命)이 되리라. 하지만 우리가 시도하고 도모하는 일이 성사되든 안 되든, 그 결과가 어떻든 상관없이 모두가 다 남는 장사가 아니겠는가? 우리 생각 좀 해보면 이 얼마나 기막힐 기적 이상의 행운인가!
우리가 이 세상에 태어나 삶을 살아 본다는 것은 축복 중의 축복이 아니랴. 우리 각자 두뇌 속에 하늘의 수많은 별들만큼의 신경 세포인 ‘뉴론들(neurons)’이 있다고 하지 않는가. 우리 모두 우주 나그네 코스미안들로서 이 지구별을 방문하지 않았더라면 이 아름답고 경이로운 곳에 머무는 동안 해보지 못했을 일들도 하늘의 별만큼 많지 않은가 말이어라.
기어도 보고, 걸어도 보고, 날아도 보고,
온갖 아름다운 풀, 꽃, 산과 들, 강과 바다도 보고,
갖가지 시고 맵고 짜고 달고 맛있는 음식도 먹어보고,
새소리, 빗소리, 바람 소리, 천둥소리, 자연의 소리 들어보고,
가슴에서 샘솟는 시와 노래지어 읊고 부르기도 듣기도 해보고,
기쁨과 아픔과 슬픔의 사랑도, 그 좋은 섹스도 할 만큼 해보고,

그리고 끝으로 죽어도 본다는 것, 이 모든 것이 우리 각자 모두
사랑의 무지개배를 타고 망망대해(茫茫大海) 코스모스바다로
황홀하게 항해해보고 하늘하늘 코스모스하늘로 날아본다는 것
이 얼마나 기차도록 기막힐 기적의 행운이 아니고 무엇이겠는가.
이처럼 우리 삶이 우주항해이고 우주비행이며 우주여행의 우주 놀이라면 우리가 어떻게 이런 놀이를 더 좀 신나고 재밌게 해볼 수 있을까? 길잡이로 옛날이야기 하나 해보리라. 유방을 도와 중국 한나라를 건국한 장량의 이야기다.
진시황은 중국을 제패하여 통일제국을 이룩했다. 멸망한 나라의 무관 귀족 출신이었든 젊은 장량은 진시황을 암살할 계획을 가지고 자기 나라의 재건을 도모한다. 한때 장량은 진시황의 마차를 습격하였으나 실패하고 쫓기는 신세가 되어 자신의 신분을 감추며 떠돌이 생활을 하던 중, 한 시골에서 다리에 걸터앉아 있는 노인을 만난다.
노인은 장량을 보고 신발이 다리 아래로 떨어졌으니 주워 달란다. 장량이 힘들게 다리 아래로 내려가 신발을 주워 오자 노인은 이제 신발을 신겨 달란다. 신발을 신겨 주자 노인은 신겨 준 신발을 다리 아래로 떨어뜨리고는 다시 주워오란다. 반복되는 노인 부탁에 장량은 화가 났지만, 여러 번이나 참으며 노인의 신발을 주워 오자, 노인은 선물을 줄 터이니 다음날 보자고 했다.
다음날 장량이 다리에 나오자 노인이 버럭 화를 낸다. 젊은 놈이 노인보다 미리 나와 있어야지 하면서 내일 다시 오라 한다. 다음 날 다시 일찍 그 다리에 가보니, 노인이 또 먼저 와 있었다. 다시 늦게 왔다고 야단치며 다음날 다시 나오라고 한다. 장량은 그날 아예 집에 가지 않고 그 다리에서 밤을 새우고 기다렸다. 그러나 다음날 해가 지도록 노인이 나타나지 않아 떠나려고 일어날 즈음 나타난 노인이 책 한 권을 건네주면서 “천하통일을 하려면 이걸 미리 꼭 읽고 준비하라” 말하고는 사라진다.
장량은 자신의 마음을 읽은 노인의 독심술(讀心術)에 감탄하며 이 책을 수도 없이 여러 번 읽고 또 읽은 후 유방과 한신을 만나 함께 한나라를 건국하게 된다. 노인이 장량에게 건네준 책이 바로 ‘소서(素書)’라는 비서로 정신수양과 지혜에 관한 중국 고서 중 하나이다. 이 소서를 탐독한 장량은 물고기를 잡기 전에 먼저 그물을 짰다고 한다.
원불교 창시자 소태산 대종사는 “일이 없을 때는 항상 일 있을 때 할 것을 준비하고 일이 있을 때는 항상 일 없을 때의 심경을 가질지 니, 만일 일이 없을 때 일 있을 때의 준비가 없으면 일을 당하여 창황전도(蒼惶顚倒)함을 면하지 못할 것이요, 일 있을 때 일 없을 때의 심경을 가지지 못한다면 마침내 판국에 얽매인 사람이 되고 마나니라.”라고 말했다 한다.
전해오는 이야기로 히말라야 설산에는 야명조(夜鳴鳥)라는 새가 있는데 ‘밤에는 집을 짓겠다고 우는 새’라는 뜻에서 붙여진 이름이라고 한다. 이 새는 몸집이 크고 추위를 잘 타는데 밤이면 추워 울면서 내일 날이 밝으면 집을 짓겠다고 결심하지만 아침이 되어 기온이 따뜻해지면 놀러 다니다가 밤이 되면 다시 내일은 반드시 꼭 둥지를 지어야지 하며 다시 결심하면서 운다고 한다.
아는 만큼 보이고 보이는 만큼 알게 된다지만, 우리 각자는 각자대로 자신의 삶을 사랑하고 사는 만큼 사는 것이리라. 우리 독일계 미국 시인 찰스 부코우스키(Charles Bukowski 1920-1994)의 시 한 편 음미해 보리라.

어디에서나 사람은 자연과 운명을 탓하지만 대부분 자신의 운명이란 그의 인격과 열정, 그리고 자신의 잘못과 약점을 반영해주는 메아리일 뿐이다. Everywhere man blames nature and fate, yet his fate is mostly but the echo of his character and passions, his mistakes and weaknesses.

자, 이제 숙명이냐 운명이냐 생각 좀 해보리라.
바꿀 수 있는 것이 운명이라면 바꿀 수 없는 것은 숙명이다. 운명(Destiny) 이 작은 그림이라면 숙명(Fate)은 큰 틀이라 할 수 있다. 이 세상에 어떤 종(種)으로 어느 시대 어느 지역 어떠한 환경에 어떤 유전자를 갖고 태어나는가가 숙명이라면 이 큰 틀 안에서 어떤 그림을 그리는가는 운명이라는 말이다. 운명(運命)의 운(運)이 운전할 운이고 숙명(宿命)의 숙(宿)이 잘 숙인 것이 그럴듯하다.
따지고 보면 틀이라는 것도 하나는 사실적이거나 현실적인 것이고 또 하나는 가공적이거나 가상적인것이다. 문학적인 용어로는 논픽션과 픽션이, 컴퓨터 인터넷 용어로는 현실과 가상현실 및 증강현실이 되겠다. 전자는 우리가 생활하는 일상사라면 후자는 종교적이거나 이념적 사상, 문학과 예술 같은 것들이다. 자연적으로 주어진 틀이 있는가 하면 인위적으로 조작된 틀도 있다는 이야기다. 전자는 어쩔 수 없이 수용할 수밖에 없겠지만, 후자의 경우에는 그 틀 안에 갇혀 안주할 것인가 아니면 그 틀을 깨고 벗어날 것인가는 각자의 선택에 달렸다고 보아야 한다.
그 한 예로 노예제도라는 틀을 깬 에이브러햄 링컨의 경우를 생각해보자. 영어로 복권이란 뜻의 로터리(lottery)의 앞글자 ‘로트(lot)’는 특정 집단이나 품목 내지 세트, 또는 땅 조각 대지, 한 몫 등을 의미하지만 어떤 사람의 숙명이나 운명을 뜻하기도 한다. 링컨이 남긴 명언 중에 이런 말이 있다.
“어떤 여인이든 나와 운명을 같이하기로 결정한다면, 이 여인이 행복하고 만족하도록 내 능력껏 할 수 있는 모든 노력을 다할 생각이다. 이 일에 실패하는 것보다 나를 더 비참하게 하는 것은 없을 것이다.”
최근 전 세계적으로 일어나고 있는 미투(Me Too) 운동에서 볼 수 있듯이 성폭행이나 성추행을 당하고도 이를 참고 견디면 숙명이 될 것을 용감하게 고발하면 이 숙명을 운명으로 바꾸는 것이 된다. 또 한 예를 들면 부모의 생업을 이어받거나 부모가 원하는 직업 또는 배우자를 선택하는 것이 숙명을 자초하는 것이라면 자신이 원하는 바를 추구하는 것은 스스로 자신의 운명을 개척하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 운명이든 숙명이든 본인이 행복하기만 하면 되는 것이라면 우리는 링컨이 남긴 또 다른 말을 곱씹어 볼 필요가 있다.
“선행을 하면 내 기분이 좋고, 악행을 하면 내 기분이 나쁘다. 이것이 바로 내 종교다. 당신의 미래를 점치는 최선의 방법은 그 미래를 그대가 창조하는 것이다.”
If what can be changed is ‘destiny’, ‘fate’ must be what cannot be changed. If the destiny is the small picture, the fate must be the big frame. If how you happened to be born into a certain species, time and space, in the environmental setting, with your kind of DNA is your fate, then what picture you draw within the frame must be your destiny.
‘運命’, the Chinese characters of destiny (‘운명’ in Korean), ‘運’, the first character of which means ‘changeable/ moveable’. ‘宿命’, the Chinese characters of fate (‘숙명’ in Korean), ‘宿‘, the first character of which means ‘to sleep over/settled’. ‘命‘, the same second Chinese character of both, means ‘the breath in the throat/the breath of life’.
As for the frame or box we are in, there are two different kinds, so separate from each other. One is factual and real and the other is all made-up and unnatural. They are non-fiction and fiction in literary terms, and reality, virtual reality and augmented reality in computer terms. If our daily lives are the former, all the other arbitrarily and artificially imposed and manipulated ideological thoughts, religious dogma, arts and literature must be the latter. Like it or not, one has to accept the former as a given. But as to the matter of the latter, one has to decide whether to settle down in the box or get out of the frame, breaking every chain and throwing off all the shackles of slavery.
Let’s think of Abraham Lincoln.
Definition of lot in English by Oxford dictionaries is a particular group or set of people or things, an item or set of items, the making of a decision by random selection, especially by a method involving the choice of one from a number of pieces of folded paper, one of which has a concealed mark, a plot of land, or a person’s luck, situation, or destiny in life.
Among Lincoln quotes, there’s one about ‘casting one’s lot’:
“Whatever woman may cast her lot with mine, should any ever do so, it is my intention to do all in my power to make her happy and contented; and there is nothing I can imagine that would make me more unhappy than to fail in the effort.”
As we can see these days, a few courageous ladies are turning their ‘fates’ into their ‘destinies’ by joining the current worldwide #Me Too campaign, while the majority of victims are still suffering in the dark, with their fates are being fossilized in caves.
To cite another kind of example, sad to say, some young people choose their careers and even their spouses, dictated by their adulterated parents and societies, instead of carving out their destinies by their own choices.
Anyway, be it the fate or the destiny, if one has to be happy with oneself after all, it behooves us all to ponder what Lincoln had to say:
“When I do good I feel good, when I do bad I feel bad, that’s my religion.” And this too: “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
우리 삶의 궁극을 네 글자로 줄인다면 ‘수수께끼’라고 해야 하지 않을까
미국 시인 리타 다브(Rita Dove, 1952 - )의 시구처럼
“이상하게 느끼면 이상한 일이 생기리. If you feel strange, strange things will happen to you.”
우리가 우리 가슴 뛰는 대로 사노라면 언제나 이상하고 별스럽게 기적 같은 아니 기적 이상의 일이 일어나리.
